I've spent two whole days now tring to get my SMPro to sync, continually getting the error:
"Synchronization failed - Unable to resolve server name
There is a problem with starting the sync process.
Please make sure that the values entered for Proxy Host and Port under the SMPro menu entry Edit > Preferences are correct."
When I run the debug script, I get this error msg:
*********GET**********
ERR: HTTP ERROR: code=1
ERR: RPC ERROR: code=1 msg='Unable to resolve server name'
I just spent two hours on the phone with my ISP, Cox Communications (cable modem), checking every configuration setup -- and after repeated attempts & failures was asked to find out if Vendio is using Port 135, which Cox is blocking because of Homeland Security advisories. (Info at http://support.cox.net/custsup/safety/port_135.shtml)
After configuring all my OS and software settings six ways from Sunday, the only remaining thing the Cox rep and I could finally figure to do was find out whether Vendio is using Port 135, which he was inclined to believe because of the Remote Procedure Call error above.
If Vendio is using this port (Cox also blocks port 8080 for proxies), and is using an Exchange server, they advise me that my only solution will be to get a different port number from Vendio or a Virtual Private Networking protocol.
I need help! My auction listings are piling up all around me!

Hi Maggie,
I have escalated this issue to engineering -- I have not heard back yet on possible solutions. I apologize for not letting you know this sooner. I will forward this information on to them as well. Please check back in this thread (or your other ones) as we will post a response there when we receive it.

Hello bamboop,
We've escalated this one to our engineering group, and hope to hear back from them shortly. In the meantime, are you using an ISP "accelerator" by any chance? If so, you might want to try disabling it before you synch.

No, I'm not using any kind of accelerator. I'll check back first thing Tuesday morning to see you've gotten a solution or a response from engineering.

Hello Maggie,
The error you get is a DNS error. Please check, first of all, if you can get to the Vendio site by clicking "Sales Manager" in SMPro's left navigation bar; this should open your regular browser.
Then, please open a DOS Prompt (Command Prompt) and enter:
tracert client.auctionwatch.com
You should see the full path to Vendio servers.
If you have problems with any of the above tests, please adjust your setup, so that client.auctionwatch.com is among the sites you can get to.
As for ports, SMPro uses regular http for synchronization (port 80), so port 135 is not necessary.

Yes, I can get to the Vendio site by using the navigation bar in SMpro.
I ran the traceroute at DOS prompt and here's the response I got:

I then tried to sync SMpro again, and had it log in the debug script. Since I don't know big these message windows can be, I'm going to post that script in a separate message right after this one.

Cripes, I didn't even notice the password was in that log script. Thanks for catching that!
Yes, I do have a personal firewall in my Norton antivirus program... but I've completely disabled that while working on the Vendio problem. But --
This just gets weirder and weirder...
Today for about two hours after noon, I was able to sync with the Vendio server just fine. I re-enabled my firewall and was still able to sync.
Then, from 2pm-4pm I kept trying again, with and without firewall, and am now again getting sync failure -- but with an all new & different error message! Here's what the latest said at 4:26pm CST today:
"Synchronization failed - bad server response."
The debug script (passwords deleted!)

Hello Maggie,
I've noticed that you were able to synch again later in the day. It seems that there are some intermittent Internet connectivity issues on the way from your computer to Vendio servers.
If it happens again, please check also whether you can get to the Vendio site using the browser.
posted on August 13, 2003 12:57:55 PM new
Yes, I managed to stay connected long enough yesterday to get my auctions posted, but I'm still having intermittent RPC problems all the time.
I've been able all along to get to the Vendio site via browser, but having continual slowdowns once there, and lossing http connectivity to all sites after just a few minutes online.
After spending most of yesterday working on this, I became convinced it was somehow related to the Blaster worm problem -- I updated all my virus software, read everything I could find about Blaster and all its relations, and ran checks and scans for all the known files related to it, but nothing indicates my computer is affected. I'm beginning to think it's something to do with the Exchange servers and others routers that I'm having to go through.
It continues to be a mystery... and very frustrating! I'll post again if problems continue or I learn what the solution to the mystery. Thanks for all your responses.

Hello, old friends -- I'm back again tonight to being unable to sync with Vendio, though I can still reach the Vendio web site just fine. All my other IP connections seem to be working normally too... it's just the sync process I can't get to function.
Has there been any further discoveries around the Vendio offices about what this problem might be? And whether it's related to all the Blaster worm security activity going on?

Hi Maggie and Tech Support
I have no idea if this is related; but I thought I should mention it.
Over the past 7-10 days, I have received several error messages that all say the same thing... unable to connect to the file server. I receive this message while listing on line and only when I am traveling within Vendio. I have not received this message any where else on the net and I have an always on connection.
It may or may not have something to do with this situation but thought I would provide the information on the off chance it might help.

Thanks for posting that, Paula, and confirming that I'm not the only one having these problems. Your experience sounds exactly like mine -- no other connection problems except with the Vendio server.
I haven't been able to sync or upload to Vendio since a brief spell of connectivity last Tuesday, unable to sync at all the past 3 days -- same error message, "Synchronization failed - Unable to resolve server name
There is a problem with starting the sync process."
Hey, tech people -- this is costing Vendio money! I wound up having to use the clumsy eBay posting system to list a batch of auctions yesterday, and since I'm on a pay-per-use account with Vendio, that's all money that Vendio won't make off me... or anyone else who's having the same problems.

Hi Maggie
I am not sure it is the same thing at all but I find it odd that I am getting failure to connect to servers messages intermittently and you seem to be having a "server" problem, too.
However, I just upgraded to 5.1 from 4... I un-installed 5.0 because I didn't like the convoluted way I had to list, put in inventory & store.
I uploaded a small batch... about 16 items and had no problems as all.
When I was IT for a novell network (we still worked in dos then), my boss would tell me I wasn't "holding my mouth right" after he walked up and fixed a problem I had been trouble shooting for over an hour.
I guess what I am saying is sometimes stuff happens and you never know why. That may be what is going on with my server message.

Just wanted to note that it's ten days later and I'm still unable to get an RPC call to the Vendio server and still can't sync.
If any of the Vendio tech people have *any* ideas at all about this, or opinions about whether it could be related to the flood of viruses circulating throughout the Net, please do post a response here. I'm unable to use my Vendio account at all!

I'm posting a followup to this problem, because after 6 frustrating weeks I've finally discovered the answer and feel it might be of use to Vendio itself as well as to other users.
It turned out that the entire connection problem I was experiencing was due to a security/antivirus software program I had "auditioned" called ZoneAlarm. I tested a trial version of this software thinking it might be a cheaper alternative to my Norton AntiVirus software, didn't like it and then "uninstalled" it -- or so I thought. Turns out remnants of the program were conflicting with Norton AntiVirus and interfering with some of my IP connections, preventing me from connecting with the Vendio servers.
(I learned all this through my own online research, after spending 12 HOURS on the phone with Microsoft and ISP tech support, to no avail, and having a cable modem rep physicall come to my house and reinstall my modem -- another useless effort.)
I had to go back and manually remove every reference to ZoneAlarm in my Windows registry.
I hope you Vendio reps will file this information for possible future help to other customers.
Here's a review of ZoneAlarm I took off Amazon, which led me to the user discussion groups on ZoneAlarms' own website, and the ultimate discovery of my solution.

Some problems, June 2, 2002
Reviewer: Magellan (see more about me) from Santa Clara, CA
I bought this product since of all the personal firewall products out there, it seemed to get the best review.
My initial experience with it was good, although a reviewer in CPU magazine had warned that it could conflict with Norton Anti-Virus. For a couple of days I had no problems. The interface is easy and intuitive and the configuration screens for selecting what you want blocked and filtered are easy to figure out and work your way thru. So far so good.
Then I installed a couple of small, new programs. <snip> Unfortunately, everything went downhill from there, to the point where ZoneAlarm had everything locked down so thoroughly that I couldn't access the web at all. Furthermore, even after de-installing both these programs, I still could not access any website, or get email from my dial-up Earthlink account. I don't know which of the two programs was causing the problem with ZoneAlarm, or whether it was both, but anyway, obviously there was some sort of conflict.
Since then I've deinstalled and restalled ZoneAlarm, and although that did help quite a bit, occasionally I'll fire up my browser and I won't able to access any websites, even though, as far as I can see, nothing has changed in the configuration.
I'm still trying to troubleshoot these problems, so if I figure it out, I'll post another message here. In the meantime, I would have to say my initial enthusiasm for the product is somewhat dampened.
