Last week I signed up for a PayPal account, thinking it might be useful.
I tried several times to verify by credit card, without success. I was able to go through the chequeing account verification.
Nothing has happened with the chequeing account that I am aware of. Paypal is unable to register a MasterCard.
I did receive a prompt reply to my query, with the suggestion that I verify with a Visa card. I don't have one.
Question is, how does this affect me? Can I still receive payments? Can I transfer the collections to my bank account or does the money have to sit in Paypal's coffers?
Considering the small sums involved I don't think it will be a problem, I'd just like to know where I stand.

MasterCard and PayPal have had some problems in the past, especially for non-US users. I'm not sure what the current status of that relationship is, but there may be more information on the PayPal site or from MasterCard, if you give them a call.

Hi Railside,
International users can't register MasterCard at the moment and those with a Visa can (I can't tell if you are domestic or international---so I am working most of the information from all scenarios).
Domestic users can have a PayPal account with a bank account attached for withdrawals (user has to be verified through bank account verification, credit card verification, or faxed over information for a check withdrawal).
Canadians have the option of adding a bank account for withdrawals (several other countries are on the way).
