When my instate customers set the sales tax in checkout and use the link to PayPal sales tax is once again added to the transaction because my PayPal preferances are set to charge sales tax on instate sales. I would turn off this setting but then my customers who do not go through checkout will in most cases omit the sales tax (this is about 50% of my customers overall). Most of them are in a state of mental zombification and pay the inflated amount and I then cut them a refund others fiddle with the amounts and get it close but gripe about it (I have a collection of PO'd emails). It is small but it is frequent adding another thing to do plus I get to pay 2.9% for the honor of handling the funds. When the setting is off on PayPal I lose 1/2 the Sales Tax which I am responsible for which is a greater amount and frequently because of the transaction fee hardly worth pursuing so basically I'm SOL. It really is a quandry and I'm sure not mine alone. The Solution would be to furnish PayPal with the amount less the shipping while still showing the correct amount to the customer who is not using the PayPal link or paying by other means. This happens about 10 times a week on average costing me a few dollars in fees and probably 30 minutes in time, more importantly it convey's an unproffesional image to my customers.

This is very scary. I was wondering what was going to happen here (not had to deal with it yet) and it sounds like a nightmare. This could be a big problem.
PS: Davebraun - have any of your customers found the tax buttons confusing. When I did a trial run I didn't even see the decimal point. I've suggested that they make this a little clearer to the user.

I haven't had anyone mention the size of the buttons. I'm curious why it can't just be set for the % in my state and anyone who is in my state will then have the tax added. In my county it is 8.25 which is what I would specify it seems odd to involve the customer in setting the percent.

Davebraun, I live in Florida, I don't know if this is true for other states, but I have to charge my customers the specific tax for the county that THEY live in - (It's a royal pain.... most people just charge the state tax, but if the tax man catches up to them they are in big doo-doo.)
