I have been receiving emails such as this for the past few days:
"I sent your payment today with Paypal. It didn’t allow me to enter a shipping amount and it calculated the tax automatically, so I increased the purchase price enough that the total came out to $32.49 incl. tax."
I tried to see what they were talking about but PayPal wouldn't allow me to send a payment to myself.
I believe that customers in my state who are calculating the tax are having the tax on AW are having the tax added once again by PayPal. I would prefer the experience be correct and not require the customer to go through a trial and error work around to effect payment.
There is a Sales Tax preference in PayPal that you can disable, so that tax does not get added to items. This way your winners won't have to guess the amount by trial and error.

Thanks for your response. That would work only if all payments were coming through AW's checkout. Many times auctions are paid before AW's WBN is sent due to the speed of AW, if sales tax on PayPal was disabled those transaction would potentially be underpaid (I tried that approach) and additionally I have other revenue streams not associated with AW which would potentially be underpaid leaving me liable for the taxes. If the link from AW to paypal went through pay by quasi cash and specified the total instead of pay for auction this would not happen. Alternately if the principal due was divided by 1.0825 and the resulting number was submitted to paypal the correct amount would be arrived at.
