PROBLEM: When editing text in existing store categories using the Vendio Store Wizard, Edit Category, the "existing" information is displaced and non-editable.

EXAMPLE:

Category is,
========================================
Auto: AMC
Vintage original magazine advertisements from AMC (American Motors Corporation).
========================================

When I check and press edit, the editable text boxes that appear have only the following information:

TITLE BOX has Auto
TEXT BOX has AMC

The previously typed text, "Vintage original magazine advertisements from AMC (American Motors Corporation)." is on the extreme right under the "Items" column and cannot be edited.

Attempts to edit the Title and Text boxes results in disaster. The workaround for this has been to delete the category and re-enter the information with the changes.

Could this be due to the colon I have placed after the word Auto ? This doesn't seem to happen on my categories without the colon - but since there are no SUB-CATEGORIES available, I feel the colon is needed.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Greg

Hello Greg,

I do see what you mean, and I would imagine that the problem is linked to the colon in the category. Sometimes "special" characters can cause problems - I will have to log a bug on this one, but in the meantime, would it be feasible for you to use a dash or different character instead of a colon?

Thanks,

Diana

Hi Diana,

Thanks for the quick response.

Yeah it's definitely the colon. BUT, I found a quicker workaround instead of deleting and creating again (that action takes too many synchs and shutdowns of SMPro to get the changed category to show).

Here's the trick:

I just retype the title like so

Auto: AMC

Then I delete the AMC that showed up in the description box and type in my new description. This puts it all back to where it should be along with my changed description... all without deleting.

I would still like to suggest the addition of Sub-Categories for our Main Categories.

This would do a few things, make the Category list easier on the customer and not so overwhelming that it scares them away.

It would also "pull" the valuable info under the categories back towards the top of the page. Currently if there are long lists of categories, that info - the Auction Gallery, Customer Resources, Bookmark, SquareTrade Logo, and Vendio Logo - is pushed WAY down.

Sub-Categories would help tremendously across the board.

Thanks!
Greg

Hi Christopher,

All of my categories were created and edited via the Store Wizard in the Store Manager.

I strictly use SMPro to list my store items - haven't used the online inventory to stock the store.

I think it's definitely the colon I use as a separator, but now that I know how to handle it, I'll just keep using the colon.

Thanks!

Greg

As an aside, I use colons too. Basically it allows me to have artificial "sub-categories". Like Greg, I have car ads. If it was all in one category there would be about 800 ads in one category. Too many for someone to surf through. So, I use the colon and type: Cars: Lincoln, etc. One problem I do have is that long category names are truncated. So, my category, Household: Appliances or Household: Refrigerators gets truncated to Household: Refrig.
If we would move those pesky numbers in the parentheses that might give more room. Or, have an option to make the frame bigger or the font smaller. Overall, very happy with the store and the business it is generating.

I agree with baylor45 - the numbers on the left are really more of a problem then they are an asset.

The numbers do one of two things for the customer:

1. Shows the customer how many you DO have.
2. Shows the customer how many you DON'T have.

Either way, the numbers do nothing to add to the customer's shopping experience because:

LARGE NUMBERS - Can scare them away - "Don't Have Time To Surf"
SMALL NUMBERS - Can lose their interest - "This Place Doesn't Offer Many Items"

But... with NO numbers out to the left, the customer will at least have to click on the category to explore... and THAT is what we all want!

Add my vote to exterminate the hindering numbers to the left of the category.

Thanks!
