Hello Beth,
I was able to duplicate this issue and I have escalated it to our engineers.
Please note that it is necessary to enter all of the information that is needed for the Store item before going to the image upload screen. This is because the item must be saved before leaving it and going to the image upload screen.
However, you should be directed back to the item that you were working on after uploading your image(s).
In the meantime, you can work around this issue by creating your Store items the other way. This can be done by going to "Sales Manager" --> "Inventory" --> "New". I tested it this way as well, and after uploading the image I was directed back to the item that I had been working on.
Also, if you decide to keep doing it the old way, note that the item is saved and available in your inventory (even though you aren't directed back to).
