Is there a way for our local customers to order on our website and pick up the order in the store...without shipping charges?
In order to do this, please edit your shipping profile and select "Fixed Shipping" costs. Then for the pick up option select "Custom Carrier" from the shipping carrier drop-down box and enter text such as "Local Pick Up" for the description. Then enter "0.00" for the shipping charge.

thanks for your reply. Will this setting effect the shipping charges for purchases? specifically, the charges for multiple items with different weights? (my shipping is based on weight of the item) I don't want to mess with that.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to enter a pick up option when you are using calculated shipping. It is only possible to do this when using fixed shipping.

Just remember that if your customer paid with PayPal and they pick up their item in person, PayPal's Seller Protection won't cover you in the event of an issue/dispute. It only covers an item when it's shipped with online tracking. For your sake, have local pickup customers pay in cash instead.
