Hello!

Anyone know what HTML tags are allowed in a Yahoo auction? As an example when I use the same HTML I use on ebay, tags like blink or backgrounds don't show up on Yahoo.

I'd like to make my Yshoo Auctions more attractive.

Any advice!

Thanks

jerry

This is a great question...thanks for asking it. I am interested in answers because on eBay and Amazon, I code my photos so that they end up in the body of the ad which works 100% of the time. However, on Yahoo, if I don't use their photo upload service the photo doesn't show. There are times when I like the photo to be WITHIN the ad.

Paragraph, bold, font size and colors, page breaks, tables, entity references are the ones I've tried.

The Netscape employee who invented the blink tag ought to be shot in front of a firing squad (although I have used it to annoy people before) Nothing more annoying than trying to read a description when the entire thing is blinking (using it as a small accent is okay- too many abuse it)

I use the KISS method for posting auctions (K.eep I.t S.imple S.tupid) and I have had very good success. I absolutely HATE lookinmg at auctions that take a long time to load because of the background, animations, music, etc. I have backed out of viewing many auctions when they took too long to load because of the "fluff" --- One auction I could not even read the description because of the background- and it was an item I was interested in buying. Auction listings are just that- they are not web pages that people want all the fluff on- people want to look at the item, read the description, and either bid on it or move on. They are not interested in spending hours to look at all the "cute" animations, background, and they do not even want to be at the listing long enough for the 25meg MID file to load. Waste too much of their time with fluff and they will look at and bid on fewer items.

As for the pics in the ad --- does Yahoo allow remote loading of pics? If so, then just upload a small transparent GIF in the photo upload to get the pic icon and then link to your pic on another server (if Yahoo has disabled remote image loading, this will not work)

Okay- I tried it. I added a pic to my Yahoo auction by linking to another server and it worked.

Upload a very small logo or transparent GIF in the Yahoo upload to get the pic icon - and add your pic as you normally would to your listing. At least for now, it works.

Hi pegasus777, thanks so much for the info. I will try your suggestion. You do that by using the (img src=http://blah,blah, blah) coding....right? (I know that I am not using the proper brackets in this post.)

(I also agree with you regarding the animations and music---I can't press the back button on my browser fast enough!)

greatsale:

Yes, just a plain HTML image tag. If you are used to using them on egreed or Amazon, it's the same tag (it's also the same as the image tag on a web page- which an auction listing actually is)

When I started on Yahoo, about a year ago, they were trying to keep everything on a level playing field for most of thier customers! Since the service is basically free, I think it is pretty hard to complain about what they allow on there servers! I have been on E-bay for at least two years and when I buy, most of the superfluous stuff folks throw on thier adds is only a click away from no bid at all! So many use programs that are slow loading or with multimedia that they lose bidders instead of attract bidders! I for one hope Yahoo keeps its policy but only wish they would expand some of its categories! Wayne (:> [ edited by warr on Jan 23, 2000 03:05 PM ]

One thing about uploading a simple logo or transparent gif...the first photo you upload to yahoo's server (or link to, in this case) is the one that is displayed in their "gallery style" pages. Does that make sense? I am talking about when you are searching the listings and there is a link, "Show only photos". I, for one, like to browse using the photos, it is faster. You may want to look into this! And get back to us!

Happy selling!
Jen
