Perhaps several would be willing to track a few Yahoo!Auctions categories. There are numbers even one level up that give listings totals for entire groups of categories.
If others will volunteer to track some categories so that we have a more complete picture, I would track the following categories:
Antiques, Art, & Collectibles > Miscellaneous > Postcards
Antiques, Art, & Collectibles > Miscellaneous > Maps
Coins, Paper Money, & Stamps > Coins > United States
Coins, Paper Money, & Stamps > Stamps > United States
Computers > Hardware > PC
Computers > Software > PC
Entertainment > Books > Antique and Rare
Entertainment > Movies > DVD
Entertainment > Movies > Video Tapes
Entertainment > Music > CDs

Figmente: Good enough reason.
I recall that in one of its e-mails last week, TagNotes provided a link to a site which compared no. of listings by major category (eBay, Yahoo, and maybe a 3rd site, I can't recall).
Unfortunately, I didn't bookmark the site. If someone does know the url, perhaps the easiest way of keeping track of listings would be to print out the comparison every few days.

I have noticed many catagories on the rise people have been on one wild free listing fest this week on yahoo.
I hear the shouting about leaveing but what yahoo is seeing is an incress in listings.

If most sellers listed like crazy right up to the deadline, Yahoo's numbers SHOULD be up, even though some cancelled all their auctions during the last week.
And if most sellers put those listings on 10 day auctions with 2 relists, the numbers will remain high for the next 30 days.
I think the date to look at is FEBRUARY 9TH. Everything posted up to midnight, January 9th will end by midnight, February 8th, and there should be an ENORMOUS drop in listings 30 days from now. The FIRST test of this will be:
1) What percentage of auctions WILL SELL during that 30 days
2) How many auctions will be listed (or relisted) with fees/credits between Jan. 10th and Feb. 9th
The SECOND test will be:
1) How many auctions will be listed (or relisted) with OUT-OF-POCKET FEES after that
2) How many items will sell after that
3) HOW LONG WILL SELLERS' FEEDBACK CREDITS LAST????????
This is, of course, assuming Yahoo doesn't CHANGE the fee structure or give freebies, or let Microsoft and Chanel VERO everybody's auctions.

Well since I sell the majority bulk of my merchandise int he adult category I'll monitor that.
It will make a great example of how the fees will affect the site.
They have VERY FEW sellers ALL WITH BULK LOADERS. The 2 sellers with 1,000-1,200 listings.......5 sellers with 500-800 listings and a few dozen with 50-120 listings. I am not looking at the video section because that stuff is kinda disgusting so i dont know who sells what. I work in the toy/vibrator/safesex sections. so these sellers I am counting here are in the categories I sell in.
