Both ebay and Yahoo are laying people off. A friend that lives in San Jose (is not in high tech) said it is in the local newspapers there.

pegasus777 I live in the same area as your friend, in the silicon valley area and even work in the field. I have not seen anything in the newspapers or the local news on TV here about layoffs in either company! The only thing that has been in the news is Yahoo losing sellers due to their decision to add listing fees and that their stock dropped. Many other companies in this area are laying off workers but not Ebay or Yahoo. Matter of fact they are both hiring like crazy! Just thought you should know the real scoop. You can check the local newspapers yourself at http;//www.sfgate.com which is the local main newspaper in the san francisco area or http://www.bayarea.com which is the largest silicon valley/san jose newspaper: San Jose Mercury News

I live in the heart of Silicon Valley (San Jose) and I know for a fact the eBay and Yahoo are not laying people off because it would have made the Mercury News.

Yup there is lots of rumors out here on the east coast about ebay and yahoo both.
Why just last week and this is no lie some one here told me they heard on the news that Ebay has lost so much money that they have file for bankrupcy and if it goes through in the next 90 to 120 days there company will be disolved and there equipement auctioned off.
Thats right this person claim they heard this report on CNN Radio news.
Just one of the rumors out here on the eastcoast. this came up when I happened to mention yahoos move to charge for listing auctions the person said not to worry about there fees yahoo sales will be going up then they proceeded to tell me the news they heard on CNN about ebay.

I could believe it if they said Yahoo! Auctions was in trouble, but not eBay.
With the fees eBay charges, there's no way they could be having financial trouble.
Yahoo! Auctions on the other hand, much as I like them (even though I haven't been with them for long), is the company I would think is having trouble.
