Well, reading that Motley Fool article http://www.fool.com/news/2001/yhoo010123.htm again makes me wonder how the "signal-to-noise ratio" has been improved when the signal has been collapsing from the getgo.

The first six listings in order in Mint Sets and Proof Sets this morning. Good thing to see these new fees eliminated all the spam. Not only did the seller pay the fees, they also featured the auctions.

Title Search Results (4958 items)=today-1/24
I AM IN DEEP SHOCK !!!
Yahoo was almost this time three weeks ago at 2/3 of ebay star trek.
ebay was running 13000 plus at that time.
yahoo was running close to 8740.
take a look at the above figures.
then at the top today.
star trek is one of the largest scifi collectibles, the corner stone, the foundation of scifi collectibles, a strong 30 years from paramount studios.
their are now auction sites across the u.s. that are beating yahoo in this area. and if this continues, i for see 50% by tomorrow.
let me explain what this means, when all the free auctions go off, i believe it would be safe to say star trek field will be down at least 75 to 80 percent by feb. the first week. this has never happened in the history of any auction house with star trek items, also in the nascar diecast they are taking abig hit as well. lost at least 40% percent their as well. that is my second largest selling area.
looking at your figures on other collectibles, and auction items, i see the same trend , even worse in some area's.
i can't believe yahoo is allowing this to happen, it is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. yahoo wants the big sellers, i thought i was one of them with over $1000,000 in auctions. now i am down to 10 auctions, and the rest i placed on ten different sites, and i am getting bids, slowly, but i am. who ever started this thread was doing a good thing, this shows proof of their loss, because i was paying for feature listings each week. plus now the advertisers will flock away when they see that for the buck they are getting nothing in return except bills from yahoo...

startrek ... "with over $1000,000 in auctions"
How much is that, exactly If your missing the comma after the first "1", then I suggest you have nothing to complain about. You'll be able to buy the REAL Enterprise with that and truly explore other auction "worlds"!!

The Catagory I was watching (Antiques, Art, & Collectibles > Advertising > Beverage Related > Soda > Coca-Cola) had 7781 items in it on the morning of 01/10, 219 of those items had bids...
Just a few minutes ago when I checked that Catagory, I found 121 bids on 4036 items.
Looks to me like the ratio of bids to items has dropped a few points...

This is a particularly uninteresting point in yahoo's transformation to look at list / bid ratios as the site still has a large volume of free relists but no free fresh listings.

figmente,
Agreed.
I listed my 20 test items on January 9, with two seven-day relists. One item was sold the first week, another the second week, and now there's 18 items on their last week at Yahoo!Auctions. They scroll off January 30 (or thereabouts).
Anyone who posted ten-day auctions and two ten-day relists will have their items scroll off February 8 (or thereabouts).
So during that January 30 to February 8 window there's likely to be quite a bit of activity. Still interesting though to watch listings scroll off with little new listings to replace them.
If Yahoo!Auctions is such a great marketplace, why does the entire auction site have the "feel" of being populated only with re-lists? Where have all the buyers been these last two weeks?

You obviously did not check out those airline ticket auctions.
If you had, you could have noted that this guy isn't selling them for that. On the description page, he tells you not to bid, that the cost is $50.00. He only listed that way to avoid higher listing fees.
Some fun Hey!.
BUT IT GETS BETTER. what do you think you find when you check this seller's feedback?
People screaming about fraud, coupons requiring you to book two weeks of rooms in a hotel, etc.

I believe that the new Yahoo listing fees will have the opposite effect of what they claimed to be there reason.
Sellers of quality merchandise will move to Ebay, since if you have to pay to list you might as well list with the site that has the most bidders.
As for getting rid of the pirates, bandits, and thieves; it will only get worse. They will not leave, they will just revise their auctions to make the profit off of inflated handling charges.
With 50% of the real merchandise gone already, and all the bandits still listing; the percentage of garbage auctions has increased dramatically.

The management team of Yahoo!Auctions had this to say from their bunker:
Yahoo! won't confirm the totals but says its counts have indeed fallen. "There's been a drop-off," says spokesperson Nancy Gallinghouse. "We expected that. We knew it would eliminate the listings that were more like advertisements than true auctions. We expect more profit for the sellers now, because there's less stuff for the buyers to sort through."

<You obviously did not check out those airline ticket auctions.>
Actually, I did when I neighborhood watched about 50 of them. This person was spamming, violating TOS by having a false price $9.99 for two when they are actually selling for $50 each, violating TOS by having the auctions as single item auctions when it should have been a Dutch auction, and having an external link in the description were you could buy them outright. I also checked the feedback and was amazed that people are still bidding on these. A lot of these auctions were also neighborhood watched by another person. You would think that the number of neighborhood watches submitted for the sellers would have trigged someone to look at them, but they were never cancelled and about 7:00 pm or so tonight they will probably be running again until 10 am tomorrow (must be using the bulk loader). The only point I was making was that junk listings are still prevalant and people are paying for them.

Per the Yahoo MBAs, the site just keeps getting better and better. Guess in a few more weeks it will be the ultimate best, because that's about when the above two categories are going to disappear.

MrJim,
Correct, unfortunately
"With 50% of the real merchandise gone already, and all the bandits still listing; the percentage of garbage auctions has increased dramatically."

I emailed Yahoo abuse with links to the sellers 300 ads & 5 ID's 5 days ago. Got this response
"Thank you for your email.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will look into the situation and take the appropriate action."
Apparently they don't think action is necessary, he's relisted on all ID's every night since. "Customer Care" is still useless, the site is still full of scams and spams and they are still doling out canned replies and letting the real "junk" ads run.
Jimhhow asks
"what do you think you find when you check this seller's feedback?"
I find all negs for selling vs. all positives for buying. Every time he gets more negs he buys more 10 cent sports cards to earn positives. He's gonna be in trouble when all the 10 cent sports card sellers are forced out in a few weeks.
Odd how Yahoo booted so many sellers with minor violations but do nothing about this person who is actually costing them a lot of money with this insertion fee scam (aside from his other violations).
Dimview & all other trackers
I appreciate your daily reports very much. I can't wait to see the Feb. 11th stats

Please, don't misunderstand, I support your point entirely. I didn't bother to neighborhood watch the guy because I no longer care about Yahoo auctions. As far as I am concerned they are getting what they asked for. Then too as you noted, neighborhood watch does not mean that action will be taken by Yahoo anyhow. Everyone, keep up the good work, thank you for the interesting posts and insights into the decline of the Yahoo empire
