John10101	posted on February 11, 2001 11:59:35 AM new Hi Folks, It looks like Yahoo Auctions has basically bottomed out from its steep fall, though it may still drift gradually lower from here. This morning's number is 234,161 and I've updated the chart at http://homestead.juno.com/john_r_wong/files/yahoo.jpg Now that we've reached this point I'd like to leave you with a view of how Yahoo Auctions is performing. Sampling 2,500 items distributed evenly through all the items that closed yesterday there was a 24% success rate, average closing price was $73 (exluding items > $500 avg = $57), and average number of bids per successful item was 4.5. Foreign items made up about 7% of the total and excluding them didn't change the numbers much. This compares to Ebay at 50% success rate and $40 average closing price (haven't checked in a while). Though much smaller Yahoo auctions has improved much. During mid-October at 2 million items the success rate was 5.5% and a couple weeks ago at 600K items it was 8%. It's been interesting following the developments of Yahoo Auctions this month. I wish the sellers here good luck with their businesses. John [ edited by John10101 on Feb 11, 2001 12:30 PM ]

genxmike	posted on February 11, 2001 08:45:15 PM new Hi John, Thanks for updating the chart. I'd have to question your methodology for calculating successful auctions. Can you give us a few more details on how you made your 24% calculation? I'm still seeing a success rate of 5-8% in most of the categories I'm looking at. Same thing with most searches I perform. I have serious doubts that 24% is a correct number and fear it may have been skewed through human error. Fool on!
rolllanotherone	posted on February 11, 2001 09:17:31 PM new Okay the stats are nice, has brought new light to how we list. I have found one flaw that will probably be gone by the time I post this. Collectibles>Misc> POLICE 56,000+ on 2/11 I found 1 page 22 actually items listed. On 2/10 this page had 59,000+ 1 page 24 items were actually listed. What is that about? Is there a secret code for the rest or what? I only noticed this catagory because I thought police items were limited and surprised to se a catogory for it, to see 59K in this catagory was amazing, even more so since there wasn't a full page to begin with!!!

John10101	posted on February 12, 2001 08:51:23 AM new GenXMike, I follow internet auctions somewhat closely and have been doing this kind of thing for a while. I track the item counts for most of the important auction sites around the world. I trust my own numbers (but no guarantees of accuracy, use #'s at your own risk, etc. etc.). Anyway, that said, speaking hypothetically one could gather all the item numbers from the entire site. Since it would take a lot of time to check each item that closes, it's best and IMO valid to sample the items. I don't believe it has to be random as long as you sample evenly and use a large enough sample size. So then it's just a matter of visiting each the page of the sampled closed items to check for the basic statistics. There are actually some successful, categories namely those of "commodity" goods (new items of known value). Browse through some of the computer categories. John P.S. As I indicated before, using a highly successful category makes it easy to skew the success rate. A look at the Video category on Yahoo shows a success rate of a little more than 5%. Not much better than the 3% success rate experienced before Yahoo charged fees. While certain types of Sports Cards have better sellthru rates, most categories seem to have very low values. Again, I have my serious doubts about the success level you stated being valid across the board on Yahoo. BTW, I've been selling on online auctions for 3 years and track a lot of numbers myself. I'm sure you have your methods but most sellers would tell you a different story. Fool On!

I sample items that closed evenly distributed throughout all the items in all categories. That was 5% of all items that closed. Ideally, that should be randomized but if it's 5% (2500 items) randomness is less important, IMO (too lazy). This is a transition for Yahoo. There seems to be some sentiment for seeing Yahoo fall to near zero, but that's not likely to happen. Its size appears to have shrunken to its "true" size now that the less active items aren't being listed. I believe "true" size is 1/25th Ebay (calculated below; that might weaken a bit with the listing fee). Yes, some may insist it's now all supported by "funny money" but I'm assuming people will tend to use even that sparingly, and if they find that Yahoo offers reasonable value for the items they're selling they might (horrors!) pay to list. John PRE-listing fee assumptions: Yahoo success rate: 5% Yahoo items: 2 million Ebay success rate: 50% Ebay items: 5 million Yahoo: 2 million x 5% = 100,000 successfully close items Ebay: 5 million x 50% = 2,500,000 100,000 / 2,500,000 = 1/25th Yahoo "true" size: Ebay x 1/25 = 200,000 items
