Today at noon that site keeping us on the edge of our seats for the grand finale of Yahoo's fall from grace will show their latest stats.
Last week they had it down to 248,000 yet there were still many bulk sellers who managed 14 day auctions and 2 free submits still up and running at last weeks post time.
Those who managed to post 14 day freebies with 2 free submits on January 9th all ended on the 20th.....
We'll see how it looks in a few short hours

I just came up with around 225,000, but my computer crashed halfway through my count, so I don't know how close that is.
"Bid wins" search results is down to under 6,000 now (not surprising, since most sellers would rather get a higher price through multiple bids if they have to pay to list).
There are a LOT of "new", no-feedback sellers putting dozens (if not hundreds) of listings on---I assume they're eBay and Amazon sellers who have Wallets bursting with feedback credits.
By and large, the bidding is just like it's always been....active on coins, Beanies, digital cameras, etc. and dead on everything else but the give-aways. It's pitiful to see something with 8 bids only at $4.25. I mean, why bother???

The categories I check still have auctions listed multiple times, so the count is still inflated. Wonder what it would be if these duplicates were eliminated?

I saw a substantial drop in one of the catagories I have been watching. From 772 yesturday to 67 today and 733 to 28 in another.

I still think the Yahoo count on Downtown Magazine is too high.
I don't believe he's using a "fresh" (unvisited) browser AND opening every sub-category to count the listings, BOTH of which are necessary to get an accurate count, since Yahoo posts so many sub-categories TWICE (under different category links).
When you look at every category with a "fresh" browser, any subcategory you've ALREADY counted (by approaching through a DIFFERENT category link) won't be counted AGAIN (you'll know you've already counted it because the hyperlink color has changed). This is the only way you can do the count without OVERCOUNTING the duplicate sub-categories.

Granee,
That count is 9% higher than mine yesterday. One category that I'm not tallying is the adult category but I understand from previous comments that's just a couple of thousand items.
He does make an effort to exclude duplicate categories by excluding those with the "@". I'm not sure that's the best way to do that. Those might be hand coded and someone at Yahoo forgetting to include an "@" on a higher level category would result in too high an estimate. If that other count is high, it's not high by much though.
If Downtown Magazine's count is 9% higher than YOUR count without the adult items, then your count and mine are pretty close.
I DID include the adult items and came up with a few more than 226,000 early Wednesday morning. I don't pay attention to @, but I open EVERY sub-category to see the actual current count and I don't count anything that's already been visited/counted. I don't know why his count would be 15,000 higher UNLESS he's double-counting something.

I sell in the adult categories.......
nearly all sellers are bulk loaders or at least maintain a lot of simaltaneous listings. Some of the categories are down over 95%
1990's bseball cards went from 104,500 right before the freebie cut-off to 2,340 DAMN!! a 98% drop
Some people are counting the progress of categories that never had many listings at any time. so its easy to say a 100 item category falling flat.
I like to watch the categories that had 10,000+ listings out of morbid curiosity.
I still list and sell on Yahoo as all of my competitors bailed but you won't find me as a cheerleader there happy to be the only one listing for an entire section of the site. True I am glad the 1,200 item bulk listers are gone and out of my way.......but I don't want to be all alone either.

Hi granee:
How do you get a "fresh" (unvisited) browser?
We know that the problem with our high count is due to duplicate items, we have identify a few of those duplicate listings; and no the don't always have a "@" ending.
I requested all your help to get my count more accurate in the categories you follow and have a great deal of expertise and receive some input that is helping us to make the count more accurate.
Thanks to Figmente, who was nice enough to lent his expertise and point out that US Coins are also included in World Coins and they don't use the ending @. After, we were able to determine additional duplicates, such as Motorcycles listed under their own category and under Vehicles, again without using the ending @ and a few others.
Thanks to John also who was very helpful in pointing out that Yahoo may have coded by hand and therefore, not all duplicate items have the "@" ending.
We will continue updating our methodology until we get it accurate.

Thanks very much to all of those taking the time to assemble counts, and get the counts as accurate as possible. It is very much appreciated by all of us.

Hi everyone:
Just received another email with instructions to clean-up browser, all within the window system:
To clear the browser cache (Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and 5.0)
1. From the Access menu, click Preferences.
2. In the Preferences window, click WWW.
3. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete Files.
4. Click OK.
5. In the Internet Options, click General
6. Temporary Internet Files, click delete
7. History, click Clear history
If anyone else needed to clean-up their browser, you can used the above instructions, it worked very well for us.
On my computer (Windows 98 2nd Version), I clear the browser through Files: Tools: Internet Options:
1) Clear History AND
2) Temporary Internet Files: Delete Files.
All the category names on Yahoo Auction will be an "unvisited" blue when "fresh", turning sort of khaki colored after being "visited".
If you'll use that fresh browser now to count the auction totals, you'll SEE how many sub-sub-categories on Yahoo are cross-listed TWICE (many, many, many), because the sub-category link will change colors after you've "visited" (and counted) it. You have to go all the way down to the actual listings themselves, NOT just count the totals in parenthesis next to a sub-category name.
While doing a count, you also get a real good feel for what's getting bids and at what prices, though you can't always tell how much is selling since you have to look at actual listing pages to see if there are unmet reserves.

Hi granee:
Thank you, I am sure we can all benefit from your expertise and advise.
We are doing just that, we are going from the individual items to the sub-sub categories and making notes of which are listed in more than one category to improve our program and method of collecting data.
Yes, once we hit a category once, the hyperlinks changes color to the default visited color. We will yet get an accurate count of the entire site.

Speaking of Internet Explorer Options. I have a problem unique to my computer. On approx 10 percent of URL that I visit, I experience delays ranging from 10 seconds - 2 Minutes of inactivity, the system appears frozen then after a while the new page appears. Also happening is a delay filling in fields on some URL, my computer delays moving the cursor from field to field. It always happens on the same web pages. I have ATT Home Internet Service which was just installed. Prior to ATT Home I had AOL and experienced the same problem on the same URL. I go to another computer and the problem does not exist. The problem is definitly exclusive to my computer. Any help appreciated.

It's not exclusively your computer. It happens on mine as well. I'm using MSN and have an HP computer.

If you want to, you can set 'History' to hold files for "0" days, on Windows 2000 version, IE 5.0. That way you never have to 'clear' it again. As long as you visiit these sites daily they will always be in your 'History' file, for easy access, but you will not keep accumulating more than you need, and slowing your PC.

Thanks all! I had been having trouble with my computer running slow, slow, slow. Was beginning to think the cold outside was affecting the computer. Last couple days I even crashed when accessing certain sites. Read this thread and decided it was time to clean the history house. You would think I have a new computer. Thanks much!
