Somewhere I read of a website where you can download a free firewall (I have DSL now), but I didn't write it down and can't find the mention again. My internet search hasn't turned up anything but websites for ones to purchase in a store.
I love the speed of DSL, but they went down for 2-1/2 days and didn't provide a dial-up backup service (60 minutes per MONTH on their 800 number is all they give---which is all but useless, expecially when their mail is down, too).
This after I waited 11 weeks to get it "installed" (activated, really, since I got a "self-install" modem). Bell Telephone doesn't know the meaning of the word "prompt" or "efficient".

Humm, that link works fine for me. You can also try ths one, but I think it points to the same page: http://www.zonealarm.com I hope the URL that auctionee gave you works for you otherwise. Just one of those strange things about the Net.
DSL has been a blast, but my provider (pacbell.net) has email problems too. Enough of them to make me keep my dialup account on my old ISP. (But I sublet the connection, and just use the email. <g>
Edited because I left out a couple of words........I heard them, just didn't type them.

Thanks for all your help. The www.zdnet.com link worked (I still can't get the page at www.zonealarm.com), and I downloaded the firewall. If I have problems I can't solve with it, I'll post them here!

Here is a good site that will check the security of your PC ports against hackers. I highly recommend you test your machine if you have cable or DSL connection.
I had Black Ice for a year, or so. To many glitches kept popping up, and shutdowns of it's engine. Plus, and this is a big plus, it leaves your 'Ident' port showing as being there, which is not good. Packets sent randomly by hackers will show there was a PC there to receive them, even if blocked, temporarily. The hacker may be enticed to try again, or use different methods to get in your PC. Zone Alarm leaves all of your PC in 'Stealth' mode, including your 'Ident'. Packets sent web wide will not even recognize you have a PC, can't beat that. It's free too, for now.
Not trying to be argumentative, but having used both, and paying for one. Zone Alarm is far superior, and doesn't cost anything, for now. I'm sure it may in the future. If it does, I will still use it, even if it costs more than Black Ice.

I run Zone Alarm too, and when I tested at the site listed above, all tested secure, and due to the stealth mode , test reported that it could not tell that my PC even existed online.

If you will check your PC before installing Zone Alarm, and then after, you will see what I meant by your total PC being in Stealth mode, after installation.
