I just read an article that said there may be a chance that eBay is going to buy Yahoo. Does anyone know anything about this ?

Hi Sandy
Was it a specific article.. is there a link to it on the web? I'd like to see that
I will tell you that I read/post to these type boards all the time and I do remember seeing talk about ebay buying yahoo about 1 year ago..it was around the time that yahoo started charging fees I believe. At the time, I just figured it was rumor but hey - one never knows?
Have a good auction week.

I hope it doesn't, it'll be a nightmare. Anyway, yahoo is doing very well these days (maybe even better than Ebay.) So if under the current circumstances one of them is thinking to buy the other it'll be yahoo.

I use to have a theory involving eBay or a subsiduary company of theirs buying the larger free alternate auction sites and then running them into the ground to discourge sellers/buyers from using that genre of site. The Department of Justice would frown on it but I wouldn't put it past Meg to try something like that. I've given up on the theory as for the most part the larger free listing auction sites are doing a great job of running their sites into the ground on their own.

I saw the article link from a post on the eBay boards and I have no idea when it was written so It could be an old one.

I was a loyal eBay seller until they just this week imposed that awful checkout feature. I am now listing on Yahoo and would certainly hate to see eBay buy any of the other auction sites.

This rumor has circulated a long time. The last article I saw was May:

http://www.siliconvalley.com/docs/news/tech/048732.htm
"AP: How close were Yahoo and eBay to merging last year?

WHITMAN: We talked to them pretty seriously over a reasonably sustained period of time. It was a very real possibility from both sides.

AP: Is a similar deal with another company possible?

WHITMAN: I think going it alone makes the most sense. We are a much stronger company than we were two years ago. We have two big distribution partners in AOL and Microsoft. The allure of the Yahoo deal was access to distribution on a worldwide basis. Frankly, we have accomplished that through commercial relationships. And our sense of how big this company can be is big enough now so that it merits a stand-alone company."

Greetings from the UK,

It was on a thread at eBay's chat forum and I went to find it but it is gone now. Look at the other posts here. Seems that is an old story.

That's absolutely the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard..

Why is it so ridiculous? Think about it for a minute. Yahoo has 3 million US listings and starts listing fees and rapidly drops to a mere 200,000 listings. Those refugee sellers find a suitable alternative ( almost free ) site and park their items there. Almost none of those items went to eBay. The sellers spend a LOT of time getting their items all listed at the new site and wait for advertising of the site(s) to get traffic and sales and a new Yahoo Auctions is born. But eBay waits to see who the new King of the Free Sites is ( one site has over a million listings ) and whamo for a milion bucks they buy the site and charge fees and drive the sellers away to another free site. eBay could do that each time a new site shows itself to dominate the listings. After a while most of sellers either give up on online auctions or go back to eBay. Micro$oft buys up competiting companies all the time.
The theory was flawed because the new dominate sites are destitute and have no money for advertising and their sites are dismal failures due to lack of traffic and sales. That failure to give sellers any hope of a rosy future works in eBay's favor and eBay doesn't have to waste a dime. eBay must hope the new dominate sites stay in business to show sellers that there is really only one game in town.
