I have been using eBay for some time now with good results (mostly). I am considering trying Yahoo! for some automotive items (Amphicar).

How has Yahoo! been? Are you happy, if not why?

I am very happy about Y!Auctions. I am doing great selling computer stuff.

I am struck by ignorance of many EBayers who simply refuse to try Y!Auctions. Try it and see what works for you. I agree some items sell better on Ebay, while others have equal chance of selling on Yahoo. Taking into account that Y!Auctions is much cheaper and user friendlier, it's the obvious choice for me to do business with Yahoo.

Regards

I know over a year ago when I was checking out automotive items, I did see many Amphicar items with bids at Yahoo. Haven't checked lately, but I am sure they would do quite well there.

In many ways Yahoo can be a real jackpot for many sellers. There is definetely less competition for goods and many of the buyers seem to have just got off the boat and are very new to the online auction scene and are GREAT customers.

Don't waste your time. Got all set up, then created one listing to launch two days ago.
Kept getting error messages (same as others were getting); re-submitting all my info, credit card, etc.....still no launch and repeated error message. Finally gave up and removed all info from their site...besides, I didn't like their method of getting into my "wallet".

Funny that you are the only one having trouble getting on. I have been on Yahoo for a while with no problems at all.

The only probems I have with Yahoo is that I am forced to enter my password after every couple listings. It's a minor uncomfort.

Why don't you just check out Yahoo and see how well the items you have sell? Completed auctions go back several months.

If I can sell something for the same or more on Yahoo, I'll list it there. Since Yahoo has better results at Buy Now rather than auctions, it's really easy for me to beat ebay's results because less competiton.

When I first started listing on Yahoo I had the log in constantly problem too. I think there is a box you can check somewhere that lets you not have that problem any more. About once an hour you will have to verify your special password though.

It is a lot cheaper but still needs a LOT more bidders. One very good thing about Yahoo Auctions lately is the very large percentage of brand new users. Almost no deadbeats on the sites when it use to be the 'Deadbeat Capitol of Auction World'.

Here's a list of some of the good things about Y over E ...

Feedback System!
A buyer/seller can change the feedbacks that they have left. To view only the bad feedbacks a user only has to click on the 'dark cloud' and the 'sun' for the good feedbacks. The actual feedbacks have the auction title and price and are clickable. A seller can set the minimum feedback rating of bidders on his/her auctions. If everyone would set that rating to (0) then every new bidder that is not serious about the auctions that gets a (-1) rating would effectively be unable to bid on any future auctions. eBay lets these bad bidders bid away on their site!

I'll post more later.

Fees and listing:

Same setup in some ways because if an item sells the second time there is no relisting fee. But .....
Yahoo has:
a 5 cent listing fee for items up to $9.99 instead of eBay's 30 cents
and
a 2% FVF on an item up to $25 on Y
a 5.25% FVF on an item up to $25 on E

Y has no extra charge on the BIN or 10 day listing duration options ( no extra charge for 14 day auction duration either if Y's bulkloader is used )

BIN price on Yahoo stays in place till it is met ( not like E's disappearing BIN on first bid or the first retracted bid ).
There are BIN prices on Dutch Auctions ( not found on E and the BIN also stays till all items reach BIN price ).

No sham of multiple category(s) listing fees at Y as there are not 1,000's of different confusing categories.

Y has more listing duration options than E and all are free. Y has a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 ( and 14 days if bulkloader used) listing duration options compared to E's 3, 5, 7, and 10 day options.

Y allows sellers to select the time when an auction ends and E does not unless a third party lister is used.

Y has an automatic relisting option for either 1 or 2 relists. E does not have this free option.

Y allows 3 free photos with high quality images and E allows only 1 and hits sellers 15 cents for each additional photo used.

Y gives sellers a 50% rebate on the final cost of promoting an auction, if the auction closes with a winner.

I've sold some things on Yahoo higher than ebay - I tend to use the buy it now feature because there are fewer bidders. I'd love it to be a true auction site, but until it is it is too much of a risk to start things as low as I do on ebay...

well, I tried Yahoo! with extremely little success, so I quit. Guess I will try again. I started using Bargain and Hagle which works pretty well for me. And now I am trying bookbybid, but have had no action so far.

I wish the Yahoo Warehouse would get more exposure. Only 16 sold books there since it started for me. Better than nothing and cheaper than eBay's Half.com.

The sell through on Yahoo is the worst it has ever been for us since we started 2 1/2 years ago. I don't care how cheap it is to list an item compared to eBay. If you don't make the sales and pay for each listing it will eventually be much more expensive.

Yahoo is great for hobby sellers who want to make an extra dollar or two now and then. Unless you are selling a narrow range of hot items (that sell well on Yahoo), it's not worth the time and effort it takes to list.

I disagree with that assesment. A seller can sell many items on Yahoo at prices much greater than they would get at ebay. If a seller places 100 of these unsellable-at-ebay-for-a-dcent-price items on Yahoo and they are all under a $10 start bid then the cost to that seller is only $5. If only 10 of the 100 items sell at an average sell price of $7 that is $70 compared to maybe a $4 average sell price per item on ebay. That's $70 versus $40 and the only cost is $5 + a 2% FVF.
Yahoo may become a Mecca for orphaned items that are rock bottom priced at eBay.
The same can be said for very low cost items that predominate sites like Bidville. Those items at those almost-free sites can not tolerate ANY form of listing fee and can wait for a LONG time for a possible buyer to show because there is no alternative place to sell those low cost items.

"Yahoo may become a Mecca for orphaned items that are rock bottom priced at eBay"

Unfortunately, I think you are right.

I don't sell under $10 items and can't afford to even start them there or they would close at under $20! If I start at what I need, I may sell 3 out of 10 items. I had to pay $.75 + feature fees on all in order to sell those 3. If I don't feature, I get absolutely no looks much less bids. I have tried.

I checked auctions closing last night and there were 14 pages of items due to close withing 30 minutes from the same seller (selling under 3 ID's using the same company name followed by 1, 2 or 3). They close auction every day of the week! The total items listed by this seller is usually around 8,000 between the 3 IDs. Without them, my category would have only 2,000 items average instead of the 10,000+ showing!

Of course, they are Premium Sellers and have been since they started selling. I got tired of scrolling page after page of the same identical items trying to gleem a unique item from an independant seller. I am sure other would-be-buyers do too.

Yahoo has gotten back to the exact same spot it was in when it started charging fees and stressed the point it would get rid of the "clutter" making it better overall for the sellers as well as buyers.

Maybe Yahoo hasn't noticed...the clutter is back, only now it's being offered by so-called Premium Sellers and Y! gets paid for it so I don't see them worrying about it too much.

It's just so sad, I really like Yahoo and had high hopes for it.

I still do better on eBay, higer fees and all.

Any item with great promise absolutely has to go on eBay. Even if they tripled the fees at eBay it would still be the only game in town for very unique items. ( except for the growing popularity of certain niche sites ).
There is more and more of the same old same on Yahoo these days but like you said they don't care as long as the fees are paid. Yahoo may be in a bit of a quandry. There definetely need the nickel listing fee to keep total very low end items and signpost auctions off their site but they need something to keep it from being simply an internet store. I do not think they can risk raising the listing fee.
How about a 5% FVF instead of the present 2% but give the sellers that same 5% FVF back in the form of listing credits. Yahoo gets more FVF revenue ( and listings ) and the sellers get it back as a rebate of sorts. The rebates actually cost Yahoo nothing.
Does that sound reasonable?

At least at Yahoo you get away from those damn Powersellers and their penny auctions. They have killed the prices on E-Bay so bad they will never come back up.

I sell on yahoo only now and my sales are getting better all the time. I sell graded sports cards, and I am getting better money since there is less saturation. Like bidsbids said there are many new buyers coming on the scene and they are paying!! I havent had a deadbeat since I started selling there. Also yahoo must have began the 3 digit credit card verification system because when I listed items yesterday it asked for the numbers on the back of my CC. Feedback at yahoo really helps too. Sellers give up too quick on yahoo. You cant beat a nickel for a 14 day listing with FREE bin, and FREE photos.
