Dear [email protected]:
Dear Sellers,
Today we are announcing to our sellers a multiple level promotion across the Yahoo! network designed to drive bidders and buyers to your auctions. The objectives of this program are simple -- to continue to build your business on Yahoo! Auctions by attracting more and more bidders, and to bring in more valued sellers to help make Yahoo! Auctions your strongest partner in business.
Here’s the plan:
Tuesday, March 12, 2002
1. Yahoo! Auctions will be offering a Free Listing Day from 12:01 am PST to 11:59 pm PST to allow sellers to take full advantage of an
upcoming promotion (to be announced on Wed., Mar. 13th).
2. Yahoo! Auctions will launch a new showcase featuring items with a $1.00 start price and no reserve price for sellers who have items that
they want to be highlighted through our showcase promotion. The $1.00, No Reserve showcases have been very successful on
Yahoo! Auctions.
3. Yahoo! Auctions is now even easier to use for Andale users. Andale customers who sell on ebay can now upload to Yahoo!
Auctions with ease. Try it out.
4. Heavy online advertising begins to get buyers ready for our big TBA promotion.
Wednesday March 13 – 15th
1. Yahoo!’s big promotion begins with heavy online advertising plus radio and print advertising to
drive consumers to this online event.
2. Yahoo! PayDirect (http://paydirect.yahoo.com) will wave all fees during the promotion. All money that is sent and accepted through
Yahoo! PayDirect within this date range will be transaction free.
3. Yahoo! Auctions will launch our “Winners Win Twice” sweepstakes program. Beginning March 13th, and running for 100 days, we will
pay back 10 winning bidders everyday, plus every winning bidder will be entered into the Grand Prize drawing at the end of the
program. We want to reward and encourage successful bidders, and feel this will continue that effort.
Our last sweepstake for sellers was very successful. Thanks for everyone who participated. Our winners have been notified and are looking forward to their Cunard Cruise.
Thank you again for your support and feedback. We will have additional information on these programs in the next few days. We feel strongly that the Mar. 13thYahoo! promotion, with the Free Listing Day and the Showcase opportunity will help to drive heavy interest in items for sale on Yahoo! Auctions. We hope you will take advantage of these promotions.
All the best,
Norm Hullinger

I'll be ready again. Since the last one I kept posting. Been getting about 15% sell. With the low fees I can live on that for a while.

I'll have at least 500 auctions that I can launch. Just one probable deadbeat in the last 50 Yahoo winning bidders.

They should break a million listings this time. I have called all my seller friends this morning and I am going to help them create accounts. They laughed about yahoo until I showed them the sales I have been making, not to mention the low low fees.

I'm convinced that on the next FLD at ebay that many ebayers will "vacation" their Half inventories for a week and submit at least 5 million items or more plus a few million from the regular ebayers. This action will of course overwhelm the ebay servers and they will say "we had no idea that so many items would be submitted!". eBay would do best to never have another FLD because of this obvious disaster waiting to happen. ( 15% FVF versus a 5.25% FVF is a no brainer )
Sorry that was off-topic but eBay's stupidity is really amazing.

replaymedia,
If you don't mind my asking, what types of items do you sell at Yahoo?
Thanks!

I like Yahoo giving us advanced notice, unlike ebay that tells us the night before.
Like the last fld, I'm going for sell through and profit. I like to sell my duds during slow periods.

Well I set up accounts for friends, and now their friends want accounts! If yahoo plays their cards right they can make a mark in the auction business again. FLD's every month is a great idea. They must have made alot of money during the last.

Each of the FLD's appear that they have built some momentum for the site, particularly the second one. I do hope that they continue the FLD's, but the current interval of every 6 weeks to 2 months is adequate in my opinion. One a month might create the tendency for sellers to not list between the FLD's. It is just as important that there be good listings after the FLD to hold the new buyers that visit. I like the fact that Yahoo appears to be aggressively going after buyers with this FLD.

I finally got my family to sell & buy on ebay, now I told them about Yahoo fld and maybe they'll give it a try.
New sellers may get discouraged with lower sell through though, but at least they'll get exposed to Yahoo, and it cuts the ice so they become members and become familar with the site.
Yahoo just needs to keep this momentum going with fld every month or so. I think they will stop offering it in the spring and summer months.

I often tell friends that wish to try their luck at online auction selling to try out Yahoo first to get the hang of it before tackling eBay.
The tough part of selling on eBay is the steep listing fee for items that do not sell. A seller has to be fairly confident that their item will sell before listing an item on eBay. To list a dozen items and find out that only one sold can be a tough and expensive lesson to learn for a new auction seller.

Interesting observation. I have listed over a dozen items on yahoo with no sales and conversely the same number on ebay with sales. Is there a different buyer culture on yahoo vs. Ebay ? I am also experimenting with the semi free auctions as well because the fees wont kill you while you are trying to attract customers.

This has been a good week at Yahoo! Ok a great week for me at Yahoo!
Our sales are up to 30% so far and several of the items range from $10-$20 We still have 2 days to go on the last test batch. I am predicting 40%. That is up for the %15 I have been happy with.
I expect FLD will cause this to drop just like the sell through rate on eBay drops with FLD.
We will up our listings to around 500-100 this FLD. Going to put out some more higher value items again to see how they go.
Woulden't it be great if Monday night eBay anounced a FLD to get back at Yahoo!
I'm ready! Hahahahaha.

Emak- I do Comic Books on Yahoo. They're mostly low-end ones at $2-$4 final price. At that price level, they just aren't worth listing on eBay due to the high cost of listing fees. At $.35 each w/buy it now, compared to a nickel on Yahoo it's not a hard decision even when it's not a FLD.
I recently saw a banner ad on Yahoo auctions concerning comic book auctions, so at least I know my business is welcome there.
Don't misunderstand me- I still put the high end and more valuable collectible stuff on eBay- that's the place for getting multiple bidders. But Yahoo is great for low dollar items, one-bid only items and buy-it-now'ers.

I've never had alot of luck on Yahoo but will give it another try tomorrow with the free listing day. I've also had the same items on both Yahoo and Ebay and have gotten a ton more bids on Ebay.

Yahoo is a very good place for low priced items when coupled with a Buy Price. I sell a lot of books there and a lot of the books that routinely go for only $1-$2 on eBay will fetch $4-$5 on Yahoo. Of course any rare or very uncommon books have to go to eBay to get the best price.

replaymedia,
Thanks for letting me know. I remember coming across a comic book seller at Yahoo that had some really nice ads up and had lots of bids, and I'll bet that was you. I'm not a collector so I don't know how I found you or how I'd find you again though. I hope sales continue to do well for you there. I sell items in the same price ranges as you and I'm also quite happy with the results.
