Okay, I just started selling a couple of months ago. I've had a few minor problems, but this is my first problem where I have a dilemma on what I should do. This customer bought a doll on a 1st bid win (sold in 3 hrs! ). She e-mailed me promptly and sent the envelope with a money order by priority (I'm in Canada) which cost her $4.00 and we are talking about a porcelain doll that I sold at a low price. (Now I'm wondering why I listed it so low, but it's fun to give people a good deal sometimes). Anyway, she seemed anxious to get the doll, paying priority and all, and the problem is she sent me a money order that is one of the green ones from the U.S. that clearly says on the front at the bottom "negotiable in the U.S. only". I clearly stated on my auction, and on my EOA that I accept checks or INTERNATIONAL money orders. Usually people send me U.S. bank money orders or the pink ones from the post office. What should I do? I feel bad for her but obviously I can't accept this payment. This buyer has only one feedback but it is a positive. Should I tell her to send a new payment and when I receive it I will send her item with the old payment enclosed so she can get her money back? Or do you think I should trust her and send her m/o and doll to her while her new payment is in transit?

Thanks guys,
PG

Post her and explain that what she sent is not cash-able and that you are returning it for replacement. If she is sincere, she will apologize and have learned a $4.00 lesson. No way should you take any chances.

I have wondered about this myself. I have won a couple auctions from people in Canada. (I sent a postal money order because that is what they told me to send.)

Both times I got my items, no problem, but then I began wondering how they cashed those money orders??? Is there someplace where a person can go and get them cashed maybe??

Beats me.

Large numbers of Canadians, indeed BUSLOADS of Canadians shop in the northern tier states every single weekend, purchasing LOADS of items. Perhaps your sellers lived in southern Canada, and could easily cash their money orders in the USA.

OR....... is it possible that if you take the USPS Money Order to a Canadian POST OFFICE that it can be cashed at the post office????

Did I once read that somewhere????

Isn't there a messageboard over at the eBay specifically for CANADA???

I think so.... maybe you could ask over there, if there is an easy way to cash the money order, with no undue fees.

VeryModern, thank you. I guess I needed reassurance that I am not the one with the responsibility to rectify this as I am not the one that made the error. I think I will do just what you suggested.

jwoodcrafts, was it the pink ones or the green ones that you sent? I have gotten bank money orders and the pink USPS money orders and had no problems depositing them at my bank, but this one is a green one that I've never seen before, and then I realized why when I read that statement on the bottom. It is for within the U.S. only, and all my previous U.S. buyers knew they shouldn't send that one because it's not the international kind.

radh, I will go to the post office and ask if I can cash it there, just to make sure, but I really don't think I can. I am sure that usually the right kind of money order is sent from U.S. buyer to Canadian seller in most cases, so their isn't usually a problem. It's just a matter of making sure it's an International m/o the bank/post office is giving you and not a domestic U.S. one. I don't know why they don't just make them all international, is there a price difference for the surcharge?

Anyway, I wish she'd just sent me a check!

Yes there is a difference in price - domestic M.O. fee 0.85, I.M.O. is 3.00

Figmente, thanks for the info. So I guess that's why there are domestic and international ones, due to the price difference. I think I will add more info in my EOA notice about the money orders, to indicate that the green domestic money orders from the post office are for U.S. only.
