I recently went back to listing at Yahoo and have been fairly successful. I have also recently started using Auction Manager to list my auctions at eBay, but I haven't tried this with Yahoo because it is my understanding that the first image will not show up in the thumbnails at Yahoo...is this correct? If so, is there a way to add that image after the auctions are listed, so the thumbnails will show up?

If this has been asked before, I apologize, but I am weary of looking at auction management software and reading confusing instructions (Yahoo included) only to find out that things don't work the way they are intended (like AMPRO and synchronization)!!! I am also tired of looking through all the threads to find answers...I am not getting any auctions listed....wahhhhhh!

Thanks in advance for any help one of you kind peole can give me.

ed: because not only am I tired of reading, I can't spell, either!

ladyjane, After your auction starts through AW, you have to go into Yahoo auctions and go to "my auctions". Then you click on "selling" and click "manage" next to the auction that you wish to add the photo to.

Then, click the "add photo" button and upload the photo that you want as the thumbnail.

This is the only way that I have found to add the thumbnail when using AW.

Also, when using AW, be aware that you will not be able to utilize the full length of the title that Yahoo allows. AW can't handle a title longer than the title allowed at Ebay which leaves you with quite a bit less space for a descriptive title than Yahoo allows.

labbie1:

THANK YOU so much. I had given up on finding my answer. I realize I probably should have posted my question in the AW Manager Forum, but thought I would get a quicker answer here from other Yahoo users.

Thanks also for the extra tip about the title; is AW aware that eBay has added more characters to the the title? I think it is 55 now, or something like that. If they haven't done it yet, they will be so soon.

If you get back here to read this thread, or if anyone else can answer, I have one more question regarding images:

I like to put my images "side by side" in a simple table that I use for my template at Yahoo. The images are smaller and load faster in my template. I hate the way those large images show up one under the other before the auction description, forcing you to keep scrolling.

Sooooo, if I add images after the auction is listed, will that just limit it to the thumbnail and keep it from showing on my auction listing? I sure don't want double images.

I hope I explained that clearly....!!!

Thanks in advance for any help, and thanks again to you labbie1.

Sorry! When you put your pic in for the thumbnail, it will also be the first one at the top of the auction. Of course, it will only be as big as your original.

Sooooo, I guess you will have a single pic and then the ones side by side in your table.

Try one and see if you like it. You could always let that one show up at the top and the others in your table at the bottom. I gave up on the ones in my tables and just started loading all of my pics through Yahoo. Experiment.

I had a feeling that was going to be your answer. I wouldn't mind so much if the images were side by side, but we don't even have that option.

Wish they would allow our text to show when we want to revise the auction...this way we could manipulate the html and place the images wherever...but revising only means adding to the description...no way to correct any error in the html codes or typing boo boos.

I am also just eliminating the images from the template and uploading to Y, as you do. I sell craft books and somehow having the front cover image on the top and the back cover image in my template, just doesn't look right.

The template I wanted to use has a table inside the template where the images are small (but clearer & larger than thumbnails), with a clickable link to the larger image. They look really good and most are clear enough so that if someone doesn't want to click, they really don't have to, because they can still see the detail closely. It would probably work okay for hard cover books where I would want to show more than 2 or 3 images. Those extra images would look okay in the table, with just the cover image being the large one that shows in the thumbnails.

Y still leaves a lot to be desired in the information area & customer support, but I think the site has improved 100% from last summer. I am really enjoying buying and selling on Y now, and I think their improvements are all for the good. I am listing less and less at TOP or anywhere else, and more and more at Y!

Thanks again for all the info, labbie1. I really appreciate it.

I am with you too. I am moving more and more of my auctions over to Y! I like the fact that I can list anytime and have it end at the time that I deem appropriate. That is a really NICE feature.

I have really found Y! to be more friendly than I remembered from last year too.

And, most importantly, I am selling things!

I have seen ads like you are talking about (perhaps yours even) that have a small pic that allows you to click for the larger image. I like those. Is that connected to the service through which you list or a template that you have on your machine?

You can resize the image yourself by giving it a width and heigth figure. What you actually end up with is the img src code written twice and then an alt to small link.

It's hard for me to explain, but I can show you by using an example from one of my auctions. Should I write it on here?

ladyjane I would appreciate that. I know what you are saying, but have never used the width and height figure in the html code rather than resizing and pointing to two different pics.

dana71 I don't know of any way to transfer ads directly from Ebay to Yahoo. I can say that Yahoo doesn't allow backgrounds and so when I transfer my html coding for my ads (I use an ad template program), I have to delete the background coding.

I am sure that other people that have been at Yahoo for longer might have a better answer, but I haven't figured out a way to just transfer and auction....

Sorry to disagree with you, but I use a background on all of my Yahoo ads....if you are talking about ads created in Auction Assistant, I use the same HTML, which I have changed dramatically from the way AA does it, but I don't do anything except cut a few pictures out, check out this auction of mine on Yahoo with a colored background.

The only thing I have found on Yahoo is my font colors don't always show up in the color they are suppose to.

Regarding transferring ads from eBay to Yahoo, I personally would just copy my html on the eBay ad and drop it in at Yahoo.

jwpc Nice ad. However, the part that you are talking about with the colored background is a table floating on a plain background. Tables are fine.

To see the background, you can view this Ebay auction of mine that is closed. Notice the paw prints. That is the background that I have to delete as Yahoo does not support backgrounds.

labbie1: Here is the codes I use in my tables to link to smaller images without using 2 images (you can play with the deminsions):

As you can see, the height of the table increases according to how much you type in the description area. But, if you are not using a table then the image will show exactly the way you write the description. This template was designed for me and I like it, but I am not sure that I like the way the blank space shows around the image when there is more typing than image height. But, I haven't figured out a way to change that yet without using 2 images.

dana71...as jwpc said, I copied my template from eBay and then I took out the background and heading and just use a color for the background. Tables are fine but Yahoo will strip and change a lot of your html. I did a lot of "view source" to figure out Yahoo's coding and then fixed mine to comply.

Here is what I use for Yahoo:

BTW, do not use quotes in any of the html at Yahoo...your template will not work right. make sure all the html tags are right...especially the ending tags or your colors, fonts and alignment will be messed up. Check your html for the quotes around the url, color #, font size, etc. and delete them. Oh, use also can't use a "bordercolor", just like the backgrounds, Yahoo will not show it.

edited because I forgot about UBB

ladyjane: using width/height tags does make the images resize, but the user still has to wait for the full-size image to download.

The advantage of resizing and using two different images is that the smaller image will download faster.

Jim...thanks very much for that tip. that does answer a couple of questions I had about my images still loading slowly.

I had compresses my images thinking that would help...but it helped very little. My ads aren't that slow, but I would like them to be a little quicker for those impatient folks.

I hate the extra work it takes, but maybe I'll start using the two images...at least making a small image is a lot easier with my new photo editor.

Thanks again.
