Hi all! I'm asking a question of experienced yahoo auctioneers, based on an idea I got from a previous thread. Can you let me and everyone know which categories are "hot" on yahoo? I am primarily a single-card postcard seller, but have other stuff, too. Last month, I moved a bunch of stuff to yahoo and really love the setup for sellers, the lack of fees and increased control over your auctions. But, business is slow. However, I just picked up on teh fact that someone said salt and pepper shakers get lots of attention on yahoo and will list my paltry three sets over there. Y'know on these low end items of mine, the absense of a fee and a percentage after sale really matters. Any other areas of strength on yahoo? Thanks in advance.

akamich - most things that sells *briskly* on ebay sell the same on Yahoo. Desirable is desirable. Books may be an exception, at least I have heard this so many times I have come to believe it.
Outside of this, there are definite pockets where Yahoo sales are very strong. I am loathe to list them (the ones I am aware of) though because I like my sales and do not want to invite competition. I also imagine that this is why some others are not responding. Trial and error.
If you are having trouble selling your postcards Yahoo - read deeper on this board for tips. The main thing is to use the extra spaces in the title so that your items are searchable. Are you uploading your pics to Yahoo so that you get a thumbnail? I would say those are the two major stumbling blocks..

very modern:
Thanks for your reply. It struck me after my post that of course people would be reluctant to give away their corner of profit! I just listed my two pairs of salt and pepper shakers - hurray! But that's more a house-cleaning motive. I appreciate the tips on listing, still think yahoo is seller-friendly.

I'm with VeryModern- NOT telling specifically what my best sellers are!!!! Although if you read enough of my posts you could probably figure it out for yourself anyway, it wouldn't take Sherlock Holmes.
But I'll tell you what my slow sellers are, maybe that will help you. Books do sell slowly for me, but I relist them till they sell & they do eventually. I mainly buy & sell books that I want to read first & then after I've read them I sell them, so I am completely happy with the arrangement.
Clothes have also sold very very slowly for me- so much so that I've all but given up on selling them on Yahoo. Too much of a pain to photograph, measure, & describe- plus I now offer a satisfaction guarantee, so when I do make a clothing sale I'm always worrying that the garments won't fit the winner & will come right back to me. Don't need that hassle in my life.

I have deleted your post because it contained a link to a competitive site. You can discuss other services in a non promotional manner but the CGs do not allow competitive links.

I can "amen" on the jewelry as "slow seller"! Unfortunately THAT is what I have to sell. Over 25 years of collecting and need to sell some so I can CONTINUE to buy!!!
I know there are those that make it in this category, but "it ain't me" I wish it was because that and CLOTHING (which I view as slow from looking at the categories) is really where my EXPERTIESE is! Oh! Well! I am a bit stubborn, and I don't give up very easily, so I will keep trying!

I have to disageee on the clothing, *children's* that is.
When I have it, I put it up 1 bid wins with a fair price and a good picture and it is snapped up in a day, 2 at the most. There is so much out there, you really have to be buyer friendly. I never list some little baby outfit - shipping $3.20. Instead, I list a couple outfits, or even 3, or maybe a pair of shoes, socks, a hat or whatever, so that the lot is compelling to the buyer, and it works. It is more worth my time this way also, I's rather make $12 - 15 on a box than $5.
I almost never sell adult clothing, so have no idea the scenario there.
posted on September 12, 2000 02:09:02 PM new That's the difference VeryModern- I occasionally sell women's clothing & have never tried children's.
I don't do much business in women's clothing anymore. I am a total clotheshorse so I used to sell quite a bit, but now I only sell "mistakes" out of my own wardrobe, or if I see something that is an absolute steal then I will go ahead & buy to re-sell. But I don't purposely buy that many clothes to re-sell anymore. Too much legwork on a category that moves too slowly & is too much work when I have other categories of interest that net more for less work.
I have never even considered children's clothing as something to sell since I know nothing about it whatsoever. I don't have any kids- yet!!! But I'm glad that you can do well with it VM!

WOW. I have to say that I was wrong, at least in part, about jewelry selling slowly. Don't get me wrong, MY jewelry is selling slowly, but I figured out why- I have the wrong kind!
Yesterday I volunteered to show a good friend of mine, who makes & sells gorgeous jewelry, the ropes on Yahoo & Ebay. We did some searches on closed auctions for similar things to what she makes/sells. I was amazed at the prices pieces are going for in her specific niche! She was too, she says she can't wait to get to work listing! Apparently there is a real demand for that particular look right now.
It's interesting- Yahoo does seem to have quite a young, trendy following. Staying on top of trends is key, which should hardly come as a surprise, but maybe we forget that from time to time. I obviously did- what was I thinking buying classic gold chains?
