I don't think Yahoo is going to charge, it is a really good article and thought it had great points, but charge, no not now or a long time to come.
They are still fine tuning this auction thing personally speaking.

I think that in the near future, Yahoo will reduce the charge for "feature" auctions to a minimum of 5 cents (or even 1 cent) per day, while at the same time reducing the number of free listings availble each month.
The vast majority of sellers will choose to pay, and we will all be the better for it.

Also, I believe that this is the key sentence in this story:
Small businesses can pay a one-time fee of $199 to get preferred listings in Yahoo's search directory
Yahoo will likely start charging for all submissions for the directory in any business categories. And this will be a good thing. $199 is a great deal for any online business to be listed on Yahoo, especially if it means not having to wait 2 months or more for the listing.
Yahoo has done an amazing job at bringing in substantial revenue while providing free services. Moreover, with almost all of their ventures, they seem committed to the idea of providing a "basic" service free of charge, while providing an optional fee-based service. It's a fantastic model, and I hope they stick with it.

I only skimmed the article, but I didn't even see a mention of the word "auction" in it.
However, I think that auctions will be a good source of revenue for them. I'm starting to see the value in featuring, anyway. The people who like it will probably keep right on doing it even after those featured credits are used up. I know I will- not for EVERY item, but probably for a handfull of items at a time out of each batch I list. Yahoo makes money and so do I- win/win situation.
