That would make one helluva ugly wall poster, especially in HD. Anyway please excuse my non expertise but resizing an image is above my pay grade. In over 10 years I have never had to do that. I don't mind taking the pic again or to resize the one I already have. Just please tell me how to do it. Thank you to you and Nathan for your patience.
Seems the older I get the dumber I get. Hitting the big 80 next month. And as I said I have above I just never had the need to do this in the past. Steve

Hi Steve,

I wouldn't retake the images, just resize them in the export process.

In iPhoto you first select all of the images you plan to upload. Next go to File and select Export. In the File Export tab you can set how big of a file you want, and this is where you can select medium (or small or whatever, but id start with medium). You can also adjust how large the image is, and since the dimensions of that photo are so big - id absolutely opt to make it smaller here as well.

You can cut down the file size without changing the actual dimensions of the image, but since yours are so big to start with - you should cut that down to, otherwise nobody would be able to view it at it's full size (without having to scroll up/down/left/right to see it all.)

Regards,
Chris

Thank you Chris and Nathan. I finally got the image uploaded but never could have done it without your help. Just followed your instructions and resized it down to the smallest I could make it. Voila! the picture loaded. Now my wife can take over and do the auction. Thanks again, I really appreciate your help. Steve
P.S. I know this is a stupid question and after all these years I should know the answer but I don't.
What is the difference between downloading and uploading? I am never quite sure which term to use and when.

Hi again, one other thing I do not understand. If this image of a fairly small object only 8" tall was too big in megapixel size then how come I can take pictures of large objects like a 36" tall chandelier I just sold that had no problems uploading.
This is just beyond my understanding. Is it because I took the image very close to the object? Should I have taken it from further away and then zoomed in during cropping during edit in iphoto.
Do you see where my confusion is? Please explain the process to me so that I won't have this problem again in the future even though once you told me how to do it the end result was quite easy to achieve. Steve

Hello,

Chances are you had been resizing images before to, as even close up Vs far away shots aren't going to vary *that* much.

Taking up close pictures will always increase the file size (especially with Macro settings on the camera) - but don't sweat it.

Your always best off taking the biggest clearest image you possibly can on the camera side of things, then scaling it down for the web in iPhoto - Vs trying to take a small image to begin with.

The tricky thing with file sizes is they don't always match exactly with the physical dimensions. You can have a huge file size with a physically small image and you can have a tiny file size with a physically large image - it all depends on the resolution settings and quality of the camera. Since camera's take images at a high enough resolution to be able to print, they are extremely detailed. When you need to just use it on the internet, 2/3's of that data isn't even needed (nor noticeable to the naked eye.)

Downloading is like receiving mail from the mailman, and uploading is like sending outgoing mail to someone else.
You download an image from the internet to your computer - you upload an image from your computer to Vendio/eBay/email/etc.

Chris

Thanks Chris, that explains a lot and I realize that part of the problem is in fact probably the camera. I had been using for many years a Canon point and shoot with only about 8 megapixels.
That camera finally died and I bought a new point and shoot. A Nikon Coolpix L28 with 20.1 megapixels.
I'm guessing the difference of about 12 megapixels between 8 on the Canon and 20.1 on the Nikon is probably the reason I had this problem. I didn't allow for the difference in megapixels.
Do you think I am correct in my thinking or did the different amount of megapixels not make a difference? Once again as always you guys have been a great help and are always there for me when I need you. I really do appreciate it. Thanks again, Steve

Hello Steve,

Yes, absolutely taking images in larger megapixels will increase the file size of the images. As Chris mentioned, you should be able to scale the images down in iPhoto after taking them.

Nathan

Hi Chris and Nathan,
Back to the same problem again. I just purchased at a flea market a beautiful mirrored sconce. I took the pics and they all failed when trying to load them. They came up over 6mbs. So I followed your instructions and made them as small as possible.
I went into per your last instructions --File-Export-Select Size of file and did the following:
Current-JPEG
JPEG Quality-Low(smallest size)
Size-small
The last item I had this problem with I followed those instructions and they worked. But not this time.
There is no way that I can see to make them smaller than that and I am still coming up with about 5.7mbs.
Please offer any other suggestions you might have. This is a piece that should sell for $300 to $400.00 so of course I would like to get it on ASAP. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks, Steve

There is another box under export that reads as follows:
File Export-Web Page-Quick time
I have no idea what they mean or do but have done the following and I seem to remember that I did the same last time.
Under File export-I put Thumbnail Width 240-height 240
under Web Page--I put width 640-height 640
Under Quick Time I put -width 640-Height 640
I have no idea what these mean or do but it sounded right.
If I remember this was the smallest that showed up.
At this point I have no idea what I am doing or why. So I surely need your help. Thanks, Steve

Hello Steve,

While we aren't really setup to do Apple iPhoto support specifically - ill take a shot at it.

When you go to export all of the images, change the 'Kind' value at the top from 'Current' to 'JPG' instead. Leave the JPEG Quality set to Low, and for the Size change this to say 'Custom.'

Under the Custom size option, set the Max dimension to 1600 pixels. For the file name say 'Sequential' and then give your batch of images a prefix below it before clicking to export.

When your done make sure the images you try to upload have the new filename attached to them. If you're ending up with 5.7MB images after exporting now - you are not finding the resized ones.

Chris

Hi Chris, got all the way up to sequential following your instructions. Then you say put a prefix in the next box before clicking to export. I had no idea what to put in that box. So I took a shot at "mirror sconce" which is the name I gave all 10 of my pics that are now on the desktop named and numbered mirror sconce 1-10.jpg. I then clicked export and all the image names showed up in the next box. So I did the normal routine from there by downloading via choosing image etc. But they all failed again. So we are close but need that final step. Please think about what you want me to put in that final box after sequential. Thanks, Steve
P.S. I have been clicking the box for email notification when you respond to one of my posts. But your messages don't show up in my email. Only in the Vendio post.

Chris,
One other thought. Your instructions say change the kind value from current to JPG. But the only choice it gives me is JPEG. Does that make a difference?
I the set the JPEG quality to low-size change to custom and changed to 1600 pixels and file name to sequential and at this point I am stuck. Don't know what to put into the next box asking for a prefix. Steve

Chris,
just grasping at straws here, but does it matter if my image name has a space between the name ie: mirror sconce vs. mirrorsconce and does it matter if the .jpg is in caps or small letters ie: .JPG vs .jpg?
Steve
P.S. I am in California now and for the next 30 days visiting family so I think we are probably on the same time frame.

Chris,
kept diddling around with the images. If nothing else I might not be an expert but I am stubborn.
Believe it or not I got the images to upload. For some reason they showed up as 1.JPG and up to 11.JPG etc etc without the words mirrorsconce and when I selected them and uploaded they all went on with no problem.
I don't know how or why they uploaded that way but who cares! As long as they re on.
Thank you again for all of your help and Nathan too, There is no way I could have done it without you.
I never did put anything into that last box that called for a prefix. So I guess it really wasn't needed.
Thanks again, Steve
P.S. You guys are the greatest and you are the main reason that I have stuck with you all these years! Going on about 12-13 years now. Customer support is so important to dummies like me.
