about usOur logo represents a Yellow-billed Magpie, a bird unique to the Davis, California area that has been making a comeback from population decimation (from West Nile Virus) - a good symbol for our shop.Cynthia and Kerin are former employees of The Naturalist, a shop in downtown Davis that was well-known for unique nature-themed gifts, birdwatching gear, support of environmental and educational organizations, and outstanding and personalized customer service. When the owners of the shop decided to retire and so many customers came in to bemoan the loss of the store, we decided to try to fill the gift-shopping void that was left in our community. Not only was the Naturalist closing, but our other favorite shops, De Colores and Bower Bird, had also recently closed. We want to recreate the best of that small town shopping experience here online. Really, where are we supposed to shop for personal and special gifts? We sure aren't going to a mall or a big box store! We've listened to our customers and neighbors, and we know what we value in gift shopping, so we have set ourselves some standards and principles. First, we want to emphasize artisans and small businesses, because we know how hard it is for them to stay alive. We also know how hard it is to find unique gifts that are personal and a perfect fit for your (and our) loved ones. We want something real, made by human beings! We also want to support our local economy, so we'll try to avoid any junk from you-know-where. We are all for Fair Trade, non-toxic, recycled, environmentally friendly, local, and handmade or small batch items, so these will be front and center. Kerin has a lot of talented and hard working Native American/First Nations/ Indigenous friends from all over the Americas, so we will also feature beadwork, baskets, embroidery, bark paper and other arts to help these friends sustain their cultures and their communities. And Cynthia will be scouting for craftsy, retro, cottage-chic items, with her discerning eye. And we will continue to support local environmental non-profits. In addition, we'll try to make this the best shopping experience possible, creating a way to browse happily and being available to help you live several hours of each day. We can't make the shop smell like lavender, but we'll do the best we can. Do you need some help finding something for that difficult in-law? An appropriate house-warming gift? Something smart to stimulate the kids' minds? Let us help you enjoy shopping - like folks did when the Naturalist was open - in a friendly and neighborly atmosphere. |
