Even though most people consider dandelion to be a lawn weed, for centuries it has been used as a diuretic and as a liver tonic. The whole dandelion is used, and the leaves are often eaten in salads. It is rich in lecithin, iron, calcium, potassium and is an excellent source of the Vitamins A, B-complex, C and D. It contains flavonoids, fatty acids, phytosterols and carotenoids. Today the dandelion is popularly used to aid the digestive system. It has long been considered to be effective in treating the liver, boosting bile production and as a blood cleanser. It is also known to help support the health of the gallbladder. Dandelion stimulates the appetite and helps to improve an upset stomach. It boosts the production of urine, which may, in turn, help with high blood pressure, liver problems and poor digestion. Often chemical diuretics can lead to potassium deficiency. But dandelion counteracts this negative effect due to it being a good source of potassium. It also may have a gentle laxative effect.
