1865 Dated Civil War Union Enlisted Man's Model 1860 Cavalry Sword Manufactured by C. Roby

A Civil War Model 1860 Enlistedman's Cavalry Sword, with Scabbard. An overall outstanding example of an Original Union Enlisted Man's Model 1860 Cavalry Civil War sword. Scabbard - virtually no surface rust (few minor dots and spots) on either an originally BROWNED steel scabbard (FYI: Browning is a chemical process similar to blueing, the goal to protect the metal from rusting, except the end color is brown vs blue), or has uniformly darkened to a handsome dark browinsh patina that perfectly accentuates the patinas of the grip assembly. Pommel - a 'pebbled' cap, with the tang end passed thru, and peened over to hold the blade and hilt/grip tightly together. Hilt - Wire-wrapped leather grip over a wood base. Wood in perfect physical condition. Leather in perfect physical condition. Wire wrap original, unbroken and complete. Handguard has sustained some bending damage to the outermost handguard loop many, many years ago (battlefield damage?) that has, over time, seen the original site of impact become lost in the uniform patinas exhibited by all three loops of the handguard. I advise against attempting repair to restraighten the loop (it may be possible) to anyone but an expert due to the probability of damaging the priceless patina. Wire, pommel, and the crossguard/handguard all have identical and beautiful patinas. The original leather washer is present on the underside of the crossguard where the blade enters the hilt, and is complete. Sword blade - Has never been sharpened, and still has the factory original 'dull' edge with minor spot darkening and very minor insertion/withdrawl wear. Original tip of blade is perfect and unbroken. Blade Ricassos - The first riccaso photo is stamped in 3 straight lines: US / 1865 / A.G.M (I would assume there was a final period after the 'M', but I cannot see it). The second ricasso photo, which is the manufacture's stamp, which has been definatively identified from input as: a 3 line stamping, the first and third lines being straight, and the second line being arched, C ROBY / CHELMSFORD / MASS. I highly recommend this piece not only as a centerpiece for a collection, but as an investment! See photograph for condition.
