In Sweden, the festival of light is held every year on December 13 in honor of Saint Lucia. Young girls wear white dresses with a scarlet sash and a wreath of leaves, lingonberries and white candles on their heads. The girls proceed through the streets bearing trays of ginger saffron cakes and coffee to bring light and warmth to the dark of winter. This tradition was originally celebrated on the shortest day of the year to welcome the return of the sun.
