Fluffy's right. It's all in the url.

First, go back one year.
Scroll down to the page numbers and click on the last number...today the number is 76.
On the new page change the number of pages in the url from 365 to 2500.

This link is for Ebay Outlook.
http://www.vendio.com/mesg/list.html?num=2&thread=613871&constraindays=2500

Piinthesky, As I said on the other thread, I've posted this link several times on the RT. It's not a secret that I alone covet.

Sorry helen but I still don't buy your arguement and I believe that others don't as well. Others being mostly regular posters from the RT.

I have seen your link that shows 900 pages of threads with each page showing 40 thread topics. There have been numerous times during heated arguements at the RT when in an attempt to show what someone said in a previous thread, to back up your claim that they lied, you have found the exact thread and quote in a very short amount of time.

Now, I for one believe that you have the ability to read very fast but no one can read fast enough to find an exact quote while wading through 36,000 thread topics and come up with an exact quote and post a link to it in as short amount of time as you have done numerous times in the past, without having an alternative search method.

It is so funny how people make searching for things online more difficult then they should be. I myself have never had a problem searching for previous post here on vendio. I just wish vendio would add a search box to the forum pages. It would be alot quicker than having to use search engines.

Example of how simple it is to use a search engine to find a previous post. Let's use the VAN GOGH AUCTION as the search topic. We want to find the post in the vendio community forum.

Go to www.altavista.com . In the search box type this host:vendio.com +"VAN GOGH AUCTION" . Well what do you know. It's the first and only result. See how simple that is.

Finding information online is rather simple if you understand how search programs work, a couple key search parameters and the basic principles of how the Boolean search system works.

The one that was key in this search was host: . This forces the search engine to search vendio.com for the topic of VAN GOGH AUCTION. Searching with the + sign in front of "VAN GOGH AUCTION" forces it to search for exactly what is after the + sign. By placing the phrase in " " it refines the search even further by forcing it to search for that exact phrase.

I would suggest reading up on how to search online. Here's some good info for the "non" internet search savy people. http://searchenginewatch.com/facts/article.php/2155991 http://searchenginewatch.com/facts/article.php/2156031
Search the search engine watch website and you might be supprised how easy it is to find exactly what you are looking for with search programs.

Fluff, was that the live cat or the dead cat you were referring to?

re: "The cat in that bag belongs to Schrodinger.

(My bet is that mike and sparkz will get this, but no one else. Surprise me.)"

Surprised?

The trick Piinthesky is that I never make a claim unless I can back it up immediately. That ability and policy is unique on the RT. I'm flattered that you've noticed.

It does not just work here. Use the Boolean search system for everything. You will be amazed how exact you can make your search results. Instead of having dozens or even hundreds of search page results you are usually only left with a handfull or in the example case only one. Doing URL specefic searchs is a real timesaver and makes finding information on any website alot easier.

I knew how to pull up lots of pages of threads but that link to the search tool at Sneakydaves works like a charm. Found several threads I was wondering about and could not find didn't want to spend hours going through them just to find one that a few keywords found real quick. I did discover that with google search tool it will search just the site you are on so had been using that.
Thanks for the link I am sure I will be using it when I need to look back.

Boolean

Any guy who knows about Boolean operators is my kinda guy. (And yes, Claude, I know you do. So there.)

mike, I have not tried Alta Vista in a long time but I have noticed that Google doesn't have all of the eBay Outlook indexed, not by a long shot.

Anybody know a search engine that allows you to use proximity operators? You could craft a query something like:

find GORHAM within five words of STERLING

You want to do this because otherwise you end up with pages that mention both Gorham, Massachusetts and Sterling, Virginia. Not what you want if you're trying to research a piece of Gorham silver.

It would be endlessly helpful in researching antiques and collectibles...for those who would take the trouble to use it.

for one person to have knowledge that could benifit others here in our common cause but won't share it because of political motivations is just plain wrong

From each according to his ability to each according to his need, eh?

If you can't see the philosophy behind this then I feel sorry for you.

Oh, I see it, very clearly.

I wonder...do you?

fLuff - I am not aware of any search engines that have proximity operators like your looking for. Have you tried Ralphies favorite search engine dogpile.com? It usually brings in fairly good results since it uses multiple different search engines. I tried +Gorham +Silver as the search subject on dogpile and only got 108 results and they all look to be sterling jewlery related. Also on the "Are you looking for?" box to the right it list handy search refinements like the Gorham company, pattern's, marks and so on. You could also define your search better with additional must have + designated search words like jewlery, flatware and so on. The more words you add that are required in the results really narrows down the returned results.

I don't think I have been on the ebay Outlook more than a handful of times. Get prety much everything I need here as far as info goes and the people are nice. You might give dogpile a shot and see how their results are for the Outlook search. Don't forget other search engines like MSN, AllTheWeb, AltaVista, Ask Jeeves, HotBot, Lycos, Inktomi, Look Smart, iWon, Northern Light, Excite and Teoma. The only thing you have to watch with the different search engines is that some of them use different Boolean search commands. A good example of this is the site specefic search. Look at all the different commands there are for it.

host: AltaVista
site: Excite, Google (Netscape, Yahoo)
url.host: AllTheWeb, Lycos (for AllTheWeb results only)
domain: Inktomi (HotBot, iWon, LookSmart)
none AOL, Direct Hit, HotBot, LookSmart, Lycos, MSN, Netscape, Northern Light, Open Directory, Yahoo

Here's a handy link for Boolean and other search commands that you can printout and keep near the puter. http://searchenginewatch.com/facts/article.php/2155981

I really can't say enough about the www.searchenginewatch.com website. I have sent alot of people there over time to learn how to be effecient internet searchers. Besides, it saves me the time of having to explain how I get such good results all the time. They are also good at letting you know when new search engines hit the web and what they are good for.

Thanks, Mike and Fluffy. Good info for the search impaired! While I should be busy cleaning my house, I'll be busy playing around with searches!

The fact that Helen can find threads that some of you cannot doesn't obligate her to tell you her "secret". It also doesn't make her a bad person. Whatever she uses or however she does it, she obviously figured it out herself. Do the work.

Mike: I tried the search for a Waltham watch thread that I had been looking for, but it didn't come up on the altavista search. I just used your link and put waltham watch in, but it's not coming up.

amber - One thing you will learn quickly doing internet search's is to NEVER use only one search engine. Your thread was found using www.hotbot.com . The thread http://www.vendio.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=620243

Found using HotBot with the search criteria was domain:vendio.com/mesg +"waltham" +"watch"and the thread was result number 1. Note the the only other result was your post from last month where you were trying to find the previous thread from 2005. http://www.vendio.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=643070

See how easy that is if you use Boolean commands and narrow down your search. Try different search engines and find the one that works best for each type of search you are doing.

Hey Mikes, thanks again for sharing your knowledge and posting about the Boolean commands for searches. I admit that I never even heard of Boolean before.

Fluff,

I don't post as often as before because (as I had hoped to do), I sold the business (in March). I find myself enjoying the work much more now (I still work there, but as an employee). I work nearly as much as before, but there isn't the stress (which unfortunately now belongs to the new owner).

I'll probably be posting more often now that the business transition is well under way.

Claude
