Helen, he was running for president in 1976. He wasn't in 1998.

Whatever the opinion(s) of Carter's presidency may be, and they are obviously various, he has since attained a widespread and nearly universal respect for his personal integrity and for his astute assessments of the world condition both in it's political aspects as well as the much more important humane ones, and he thinks that Bush Sucks.

I guess it comes down to the fact that in the difficult world of big politics I can see Carter making a carefull evaluation of what course to take and screwing up anyhow. But the last couple occupants of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. were more likely to screw up because they did the first thing that appeared to favor their special interests some of which were grossly commercial and some of which were just gross.
