Well, actually, I haven't quite decided what it's supposed to mean yet, but the academic rule of thumb is that the less comprehensible the thesis, the higher the grade.
I like that approach, Helen, but then that sneaky snowy threw in the Shakespearan allusion to a pound of flesh at the end of her last post, so now I'll be up all night trying to work through THAT! <sigh>
We're Off To See The Wizard
(Follow the Yellow Brick Road)
Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
Follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
Follow the Yellow Brick, Follow the Yellow Brick,
Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
We're off to see the Wizard, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
You'll find he is a whiz of a Wiz! If ever a Wiz! there was.
If ever oh ever a Wiz! there was The Wizard of Oz is one becoz,
Becoz, becoz, becoz, becoz, becoz.
Becoz of the wonderful things he does.

WHEW!! I was worried all night that I was going to have to try to make sense of that post by antiquary. NOW I find out antiquary doesn't know either!! What a relief! LOL!!!!
I think it was a question about snowyegret's post above with the dog growling...maybe an allusion to Homeland Security and the injustice of it..a "hound dog's bite... a pound of flesh...
We will have to wait to get a correct answer from antiquary.

Song: A Little Less Conversation
A little less conversation, a little more action please
All this aggravation ain't satisfactioning me
A little more bite and a little less bark
A little less fight and a little more spark
Close your mouth and open up your heart and baby satisfy me
Satisfy me baby
Baby close your eyes and listen to the music
Drifting through a summer breeze
It's a groovy night and I can show you how to use it
Come along with me and put your mind at ease
A little less conversation, a little more action please
All this aggravation ain't satisfactioning me
A little more bite and a little less bark
A little less fight and a little more spark
Close your mouth and open up your heart and baby satisfy me
Satisfy me baby
Come on baby I'm tired of talking
Grab your coat and let's start walking
Come on, come on
Come on, come on
Come on, come on
Don't procrastinate, don't articulate
Girl it's getting late, gettin' upset waitin' around
A little less conversation, a little more action please
All this aggravation ain't satisfactioning me
A little more bite and a little less bark
A little less fight and a little more spark
Close your mouth and open up your heart and baby satisfy me
Satisfy me baby
I wonder what "the king" would have thought of chatboards.
A little less conversation, a little more action please All this aggravation ain't satisfactioning me A little more bite and a little less bark A little less fight and a little more spark

I never got into Elvis when the craze began, probably mostly because my friends and I were too young in those days for any of the popular music to have much appeal to us, though we were very much aware of him through the radio and TV and the reactions of girls generally and older brothers and sisters specifically. Hunting, fishing, swimming, games of all sorts, still continued to consume mostly our time and interests. Then a little later, swept away into the Beatles revolution, Elvis seemed more of a cultural oddity and an anachronism, though admittedly a talented one. A few years further down the road, a little less judgmental and a little more reflective, I began to appreciate some of the contributions of Elvis and others, even country and bluegrass artists. All a part of the great American meld.
I think that this hit by Elvis describes what I've seen, and sometimes experienced, during the last 5 years, more often than anything else across the boards of OAI chat in relation to both business and conversation.

Suspicious Minds
We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby
Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
So, if an old friend I know
Drops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?
Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see these tears are real
I'm crying
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die
When honey, you know
I've never lied to you
Mmm yeah, yeah
I went and bought myself a ticket and I sat down in the very first row
They pulled the curtain but then when they turned the spotlight way down low
Little Egypt came out a-struttin' wearin' nothin' but a button and a bow
Singing, ying-ying, ying-ying, ying-ying, ying-ying
She had a ruby on her tummy and a diamond big as Texas on her toe
She let her hair down and she did the hoochie-coochie real slow
When she did her special number on the zebra skin I thought she'd stop the show
Singing, ying-ying, ying-ying, ying-ying, ying-ying
She did her triple somersault and when she hit the ground
She winked at the audience and then she turned around
She had a picture of a cowboy tatooed on her spine
Said, Phoenix, Arizona 1949
Yeh, let me tell you people Little Egypt doesn't dance there anymore
She's too busy mopping and a-takin' care of shopping at the store
'Cos we've got seven kids and all day long they crawl around the floor
Singing ying-ying, ying-ying, ying-ying, ying-ying

Teehee. Long before Elvis shook his hand, my husband sat on his (Nixon's) lap. My DH was an infant and Tricky D was campaigning for the California House. Child abuse!!

I am not sure what the point of this thread is and have only read the last few but wanted to add one of my favorite Elvis songs. Hope I am not too far out here.
I tended to like his tear-jerkers best. The songs in this thread brought me back to a happier time when going to frosty fall football games and after game dances were "cool".
I was about about 10 when I first saw him on
our first TV. I still have my 1956 Elvis scarf. My black felt skirt with the records and Elvis' picture disappeared.
A trip down memory lane. Thank you. I get too serious sometimes with the way the world is being destroyed (or going to hell in a hand basket) as Helen said in another thread.
My favorite though was Rick Nelson. What a beautiful guy!

When I was a lad
And Old Shep was a pup ...
Over hills and meadows we'd stray.
Just a boy and his dog,
We were both full of fun.
We grew up together that way.
I remember the time
at the old swimmin' hole,
When I would have drowned
beyond doubt.
Shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in
and then pulled me out.
As the years fast did roll,
Old Shep he grew old.
His eyes were fast growing dim.
And one day the doctor
looked at me and said,
"I can do no more for him, Jim."
With hands that were trembling,
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep's faithful head.
I just couldn't do it,
I wanted to run.
I wish
they would shoot me instead.
He came to my side,
And looked up at me.
And laid his old head on my knee
I stroked the best friend
That a man ever had,
I cried so I scarcely could see.
Old Shep
he knew he was going to go,
For he reached out
and licked at my hand.
He looked up at me
just as much as to say,
We're parting,
but you understand.
Old Shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go,
And no more with Old Shep will I roam.
But if dogs have a heaven,
There's one thing I know ...
Old Shep has a wonderful home.
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when Puff roared out his name. Oh!
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. Oh!
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
A winter's day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Don't talk of love,
Well I've heard the word before;
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

Mr. Tambourine Man
Bob Dylan
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy
and there ain't no place I'm going to.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning
I'll come following you.
Though I know that evenings empire
has returned into sand,
Vanished from my hand,
Left me blindly here to stand
but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes me,
I'm branded on my feet,
I have no one to meet,
And the ancient empty street's
too dead for dreaming.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy
and there ain't no place I'm going to.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning
I'll come following you.
Take me on a trip
upon your magic swirling ship.
My senses have been stripped,
May hands can't feel to grip,
My toes too numb to step,
Wait only for my bootheels to be wandering.
I'm ready to go anywhere,
I'm ready for to fade,
Into my own parade,
Cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy
and there ain't no place I'm going to.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning
I'll come following you.
Though you might hear
laughing, spinning,
swinging madly across the sun,
It's not aimed at anyone,
It's just escaping on the run,
And but for the sky
there are no fences facing.
And if you hear vague traces
of skipping reels of rhyme,
To your tambourine in time.
It's just a ragged clown behind,
I wouldn't pay it any mind,
It's just a shadow you're seeing
that he's chasing.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy
and there ain't no place I'm going to.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning
I'll come following you.
Take me disappearing
through the smoke rings of my mind.
Down the foggy ruins of time,
far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted frightened trees,
Out to the windy bench,
Far from the twisted reach
of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhoutted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory of fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy
and there ain't no place I'm going to.
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man,
play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning
I'll come following you.
How many roads must a man walk down, before they call him a
man
How many seas must a white dove sail, before she sleeps in
the sand
How many times must the cannonballs fly, before they are
forever banned
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind
How many years must a mountain exist, before it is washed to
the sea
How many years can some people exist, before they're allowed
to be free
How many times can a man turn his head, and pretend that he
just doesn't see
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind
How many times must a man look up, before he can see the sky
How many years must one man have, before he can hear people
cry
How many deaths will it take till he knows, that too many
people have died
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

ROCKY ROAD
Peter, Paul, and Mary
Red light green light 'round the town,
I found a penny on the ground
Met a friend I never know'd,
walkin' down ol' Rocky Road.
Red Green ol' Rocky Road, tell me what you see.
Tell me inside out, tell me upside down,
All around the block, all around the town.
Red Green ol' Rocky Road, tell me what you see.
Jimmy, come out and play.
Well Red Light, Green Light and I'll be "it" today.
Red Green ol' Rocky Road, tell me what you see.
Hey Jimmy Huggins your name's been called
Come and stand beside the wall.
Pick a girl that you know well
You can kiss and you can tell.
Red Green ol' Rocky Road, tell me what you see.
Jenny, come out and play.
Well Red Light, Green Light and I'll be "it" today.
Red Green ol' Rocky Road, tell me what you see.
Little Miss Jenny, don't you hide
Papa's gonna take you for a pony ride.
One potato, two potato, three potato, four
Cross the line and close the door.
(Repeat)
Red Green ol' Rocky Road, tell me what you see
Tell me inside out, tell me upside down,
All around the block, all around the town.
Red Green ol' Rocky Road, tell me what you see.
Red light green light 'round the town,
I found a penny on the ground
Met a friend I never know'd,
walkin' down ol' Rocky Road.
A LITTLE A THIS N THAT
words and music by Pete Seeger
My grandma she can make a soup
With a little a this n that
She can feed the whole sloop group
With a little a this n that
Stone soup! You know the story
Stone soup! Who needs the glory?
But with grandma cookin no need to worry!
Just a little a this n that
Grandma likes to make a garden grow
With a little a this n that
But she likes to have the ground just so
With a little a this n that
Not too loose and not too firm
In the spring it s all got to be turned
In the fall lots of compost to feed the worms
With a little a this n that
Grandma knows we can build a future
With a little a this n that
And a few arguments never never hurt ya
With a little a this n that
True this world's in a hell of a fix
And some say oil and water don't mix
But they don't know a saladmaker's tricks
With a little a this n that
The world to come may be like a song
With a little a this n that
To make everybody want to sing along
With a little a this n that
A little dissonance ain't no sin
A little skylarking to give us all a grin
Who knows
But God's got a plan for the people to win
With a little a this n that

Higher Ground
There are those who can live with
The things they don't believe in
They are giving up their lives
For something that is less than it can be
Some have longed for a home
In a place of inspiration
Some will fill the emptiness inside
By giving it all to the things that they believe
They believe
(chorus)
Maybe it's just a dream in me
Maybe it's just my style
Maybe it's just the freedom that I've found
But given the possibility
Of livin' up to the dream in me
You know that I'll be reachin' for higher ground
I will stand on my own
I will live up to this vision
I will trust in what I feel
And follow my heart until it brings me home
Bring me home
(chorus)
Keep me through the night
Lead me to the light
Teach me the magic of wonder
Give me the spirit to fly

Summer In The City
Hot town summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirt and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on and dance all night
Despite the heat it will be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the night
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city
Cool town, evening in the city
Dressed so fine and looking so pritty
Cool cat lookin for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm weezin like a bus stop
Running up the stairs gonna meet ya on the roof top
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on lets dance all night
Despite the heat it will be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the night
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city
Solo
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on lets dance all night
Despite the heatit will be alright
And babe don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the night
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city
Summer loving had me a blast
Summer loving happened so fast
I met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be
Summer days drifting away to oh oh the summer nights.
Tell me more, tell me more
Did you get very far
Tell me more, tell me more
Like does he have a car
She swam by me she got a cramp
He ran by me got my suit damp
I saved her life she nearly drowned
He showed off splashing around
Summer sun somethings begun but oh oh the summer nights.
Tell me more, tell me more
Was it love at first sight?
Tell me more, tell me more
Did she put up a fight?
Took her bowling in the arcade
We went strolling drank lemonade
We made out under the dock
We stayed out till 10 o'clock
Summer fling don't mean a thing but oh oh the summer nights.
Tell me more, tell me more
But you don't gotta brag
Tell me more, tell me more
Cause he sounds like a drag
He got friendly holding my hand
She got friendly down in the sand
He was sweet just turned eighteen
Well she was good you know what I mean
Summer heat boy and girl meet but oh oh the summer nights.
Tell me more, tell me more
How much dough did he spend?
Tell me more, tell me more
Could she get me a friend?
It turned colder that's where it ends
So I told her we'd still be friends
Then we made our true love vow
Wonder what she's doing now
Summer dreams ripped at the seams but oh those summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more
Callin' out around the world,
are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
for dancin' in the street.
Dancin' in Chicago (dancin' in the street)
Down in New Orleans (dancin' in the street)
In New York City
All we need is music, sweet music,
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin,
Dancin' in the street
Oh it doesn't matter what you wear,
just as long as you are there.
So come on every guy, grab a girl,
Everywhere, around the world
There'll be dancin', they're dancin' in the street.
This is an invitation, across the nation,
A chance for folks to meet.
There'll be laughin' singin', and music swingin'
Dancin' in the street
Philadelphia P.A., Baltimore and D.C now,
Can't forget the motor city,
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin,
Dancin' in the street
Oh it doesn't matter what you wear,
just as long as you are there.
So come on every guy, grab a girl,
Everywhere, around the world
They're dancin', dancin' in the street
Way down in L.A., every day
they're dancin' in the street
Lets form a big strong line, and get in time,
We're dancin' in the street.
Across the ocean blue, me and you
We're dancin n the street
