oh dear, here ladies and gentlemen we have two WHINERS who were unjustifiably "wronged" by the strong arm of the law LOL

".and I'll tell you another thing while I'm at it!"

yea, you being a woman, I just bet you will<snicker>

"Here I was driving in the left lane, doing the speed limit, minding my own buzness"

first of all why the hell were you driving in the left lane doing the speed limit?.Thats a passing lane not a lane for your driving pleasure with your thumb up your ass looking at the local scenery.Second of all the rules of the highway state that you should be 1 car length behind for every 10 miles an hour your driving. So if you were driving between 45-50 you should have been 4 to 5 car lengths behind..ergo...YOU WERE TAILGATING. Learn the rules of the road before you take the highway again okay bunky?? You scorned a fireman and you didn't get any jail time?? man they're easy down south.

Fenix-you are correct,I'm not aware of the Rampart division.I can tell you one thing,I hate a bad cop worse then a criminal, for obvious reasons. You have a lot better case then bunky up above does, who gives pleasure in impeding traffic of the highways and byways of America. However you can receive a ticket for "driving to fast for conditions" even thou you weren't speeding.Thats the way we word it up here..not reckless driving. But in this case, you would not have received one because there was no damage to anyone else's property or vehicle.Since there was damage to your vehicle, you can deal with that with your insurance company. The main reason tickets are given out in accidents is for insurance purposes or pending law suits as whenever an accident happens someones at fault.I'm surprise the other women didn't get a ticket because she hit some mailboxes and hit a school bus. I'm sure some of these "victims" might want to put in a claim for damages. As far as you getting a ticket for leaving the scene-I have to admit thats extremely tacky.
What I don't understand is,and unless you were seriously hurt, why the ambulance didn't wait for the officer to show up before he left.We have a county wide radio here,so when a call goes out,the police, the firemen, and the ambulance corps get the call all at the same time,so we all usually get there within 5 minutes of each other.

so if "classic" were the judge in these two cases his call would be

Fenix-you've been had
Bunky-you would be doing jail time

dbl - PLEASE, don't EVER have a problem when you disagree with me....I don't. I give my opinion...fight my fight and DO realize others see things differently than I do. [even IF they're wrong ]
------------

fenix - Giving Rampart as an example....is in no way, shape or form, represents ALL the CA civil servants, ie police, and their actions. There are bad apples in any group....

"([i]The suspect) had been circling the block for about four hours, in a strange manner," Baca said on CNN's "American Morning[i]."

And to me, it doesn't relivant where he "ended up" [in front of his Aunt's house]....gang members or SUV's/vans FULL of gangs often use this same behavior when they're 'looking' for their next victim.
--------

[just thinking out-loud] We haven't discussed law enforcement in a long, long time. But once again I am seeing that the left leaning posters are showing their negativity towards those who protect and defend us. Not sure if that's another area of division between the left and the right - common denominator
between the left and the right...or just a coincidence or concurrence

oh brother! Down here the left is not for quite just for passing. There is only two lanes, and too mucho traffic to accommodate that mere functionality.

I was doing (about the -correction-) speed limit because it was a gorgeous day and at that point on the interstate there were only five people around me. And I was in the left, cause the poke was in the right until he decided to cut me off. You miss that? And as stated, I did just see the gay parade car hop on. But according to you, I see, I should have been speeding too, so johnny rotten could have gotten me for that as well? I guess you just never breeze, do you sneeezly? On a nice day? Well, then you just dont know how to drive right and enjoy it.

I drive like I swim. And thats pretty good, So kiss my tailfin okay?

::What I don't understand is,and unless you were seriously hurt, why the ambulance didn't wait for the officer to show up before he left.::

Rural area. It probably took 40 minutes form the time of the accident til the ambulance left and still no officer. This tree was infamous in the area, it's taken out a dozen cars and twice that many boats. Apparently when I started to slide and go off the road I hit the accelerator instead of the breaks, crushed the collapse on the wheel, broke the tilt, BENT the wheel and then took out the gear shifter on my way into the passenger side. It was pretty ugly. When we went to get the plates from the salvage lot they asked if anyone survived.

Linda - I don't hate police. I have nothing at all against responsible officers and I think that the VAST majority of them are indeed responsible individuals but the fact remains that not all are and for some reason, South Central seems to attract more than it's share of bad apples. Driving in circles is not illegal and this was not a vehicle FULL of gang members. It was one guy and thats about as a-typical for a driveby as you get. True there are a few areas where you cannot pass more than X number of times in a defined period of time but those are cruising strips, not residential neighborhoods. He was not breaking a law by driving around and you seem to be forgetting again HE WAS NOT ARMED. HE posed NO THREAT to the police. He made NO THREATENING motions.

This is not about liberal or conservative Linda - it is about expecting those that are entrusted with the publics safety to act with common sense and restraint, not shoot first (especially wildly or accuracy for that matter) and ask questions later.

LOL - Near....see what happens.
-----------

fenix - Please point out to me where I used the word 'hate'. edited to add: nor did I say YOU did hate them. I didn't. But some here have accused me of using the word HATE all the time, possibly because others falsely accuse me of saying it....when in fact...someone else did.

We can argue/disagree all you'd like on how we see this case. I am, always have been, always will be, PRO-police/pro law-enforcement. They are always blamed for everything and it has LONG appeared to me many people have no clue as to what their day to day work day is like...dealing with the worst of our society.

Just like in this case. This mans UNUSUAL behavior gets defended by you...like it's normal for people to act that way. And while you mentioned all the things that didn't happen IN THIS CASE, the police had NO IDEA of the situation...others in suv...him having a gun....very ODD behavior of driving around the SAME block for 4 hours. MY defensive statements [for them] are NOT unreasonable ones. Your's however, imo, seem to be stretching this ODD behavior into the realm of being normal...rather than VERY abnormal or gang related. He's not too old to have been/be a 'blood'. And they didn't know who or how old he was anyway.

The police didn't have the 20/20 hindsight that you now use. They're trained to PREPARE for ALL situations.

And all I did was state an observation I have made in the past...and see again right here. Maybe it has something to do with respecting authority while others don't. I don't know...but it HAS been MY observation. I just haven't figured out why it appears to usually be that way.

Meant to also comment on: for some reason, South Central seems to attract more than it's share of bad apples.

That's pretty clear to me...their crime rates are extremely high...against the national average...AND there are more gangs in that area than in MOST of the Nation. They have too deal with these creeps everyday...and their LIVES are more at risk than your average policeman for those TWO reasons alone.

LInda - my comment was in reference to this one on your part..

I am seeing that the left leaning posters are showing their negativity towards those who protect and defend us.

I realize that you did not say hate but you did imply that I have type of biase against the police and I wanted to clear that up.

This mans UNUSUAL behavior gets defended by you...like it's normal for people to act that way.

No that's not at all what I was doing Linda. What I was stating was that this mans actions did not warrant over 100 badly aimed shots to be fired in the midst of a residentiual area without direct prevocation. If nothing else the should all be fired for their inabiity to hit an SUV that was 10 feet away from them.

LInda - my comment was in reference to this one on your part..

I know what you were referencing, fenix....and I read your statement that you didn't hate them. That could be taken different ways....I just wanted to point out that I hadn't used the word HATE nor had I accused you of hating them. And I gave my reason for doing so. Have you missed the posts where I've been accused over and over of being the one who uses the 'hate' word in my posts? If you have....I was pointing out to those I wasn't doing so.....I rarely use the word hate...no matter THEIR conclusion that I do so.

I realize that you did not say hate but you did imply that I have type of biase against the police and I wanted to clear that up.

What's to clear up...you mean you'd like it if I'd CHANGE MY opinion? And why did you choose to make it personal to you alone? I also stated I've see this before...and am seeing it again. Plus you were not the ONLY dem who posted on this thread about this incident. So...why you chose to single yourself out I don't understand. But...to be clear on MY opinion, yes, I do see you siding with the 'accused' and against the police.

No that's not at all what I was doing Linda.

okay...I'll buy that.
What I was stating was that this mans actions did not warrant over 100 badly aimed shots to be fired in the midst of a residentiual area without direct prevocation.

And that's fair and is YOUR opinion. I said basically that when those who are not there, do not have ALL the facts, but choose sides without hearing what the police present say caused the incident...that's siding with the yo-yo that was the reason this happened in the first place. He could, as the police said, have JUST PULLED OVER. So simply. Personal responsibility.

Plus the article does say that when ONE of their own 'went down' they thought he'd been shot....and reacted accordingly. Their adrenalin is in 'super mode' when they are in these situations....and since WE'RE not the ones experience the unknown....if feel it's very unfair to defend the one who caused this while blaming them for their actions.

If nothing else the should all be fired for their inabiity to hit an SUV that was 10 feet away from them. That's what the profe said too. And them doing so could have been because the suv's windows were blackened out like so many do - so others can't see in. Again, they didn't know if anyone else was inside.

I posted to you then drew a line under my post when I was finished. I then mentioned I was thinking out loud...and stated my observation THIS time and in the past when we discuss any law enforcement issues. No where were you single out, fenix.

And I did further respond to your other statements to me that yes, your post came across to me as giving/making every excuse in the world for this 'one who just wouldn't just pull over'.

On this thread...there were three dems who commented in a negative way towards the actions of the police officers involved. You, dbl and our profe.

I just simply mentioned a pattern I've seen from the left here....and you took it that I was singling you out, personally. It wasn't intended for you alone, fenix. But yes, your defense of this man, rather than understanding these police are serving in one of the roughest gang infested towns in the US...did follow the pattern I've observed.

Linda, yes it is a negative to me when police officers who are *supposed* to be in control of a situation go blindly and rampantly shooting down an SUV. Never mind the neighborhood. Now if it was Brentwood or something, I dont think they would have done that...do you? No, because people would come out of their houses and said what the hell are you doing??

Well, I think it's funny also!

fenix and dbl- I don't think it's just a "southern" thing. You probably had out-of-state plates, which makes you an easy target for fines (money). These good ole boys have got to at least make their wages, shows they're doing there job.
It's the same in many rural areas and small towns...outsiders are targeted because they are least likely to hang around to fight it.

My father was a small town policeman for a while. He, however, targeted the local teen "rowdies" (who squealed their tires and drank too much and caused general mischief). Their parents were "white collar" and Dad only lasted a few years. The next guy was worse, way worse....he had no trouble arresting kids.

Thought I'd let everybody know about this if you have not seen it. I am glad they apologized. I will accept it, but I hope they hold it together better from now on.

----------------------------------------------
Deputies Apologize for Los Angeles Shooting
By ALICIA CHANG, AP

LOS ANGELES (May 14) - Ten sheriff's deputies who fired 120 rounds at an unarmed driver at the end of a chase in a quiet neighborhood appeared with a lawyer who apologized to residents on their behalf, but said the officers had acted to capture a suspect who ''deserved and needed to be stopped.''

Wearing suits and ties or dark sweaters, the deputies stood silently before news cameras Friday while lawyer Gregory Emerson explained that each had voluntarily told investigators what happened during Monday's videotaped shooting in Compton.

Emerson said the deputies didn't try to "harm or injure or otherwise jeopardize the safety of the individuals'' on the street where 44-year-old Winston Hayes was shot. Bullets penetrated several homes in the area.

"They're not hiding,'' Emerson told reporters. "They're honorable, decent individuals. They're proud professionals of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and they're willing to stand up and tell the community that they do apologize.''

He said after the news conference, however, that "the apology wasn't for the shooting.''

"The apology was to residents in the area that were affected by that shooting,'' Emerson said. "If we could do it over again, we would take action to stop Mr. Hayes. Hopefully with better training we could do that to prevent shots into peoples' homes.''

The deputies fired 120 rounds in the early morning confrontation, striking Hayes four times and bruising one deputy who was hit in his bulletproof vest. Hayes is recovering at a hospital.

The barrage prompted outrage from some residents. Sheriff Lee Baca offered to double the typical payment for damages incurred.

After the news conference, Emerson said he spoke for the deputies because they were involved in criminal and departmental investigations stemming from the shooting, making it inappropriate for them to comment.

The shooting followed a brief pursuit. Some deputies thought Hayes, who was driving a sport utility vehicle, had shot two deputies while others thought he was trying to ram them, sheriff's officials said.

Emerson said that Hayes "deserved and needed to be stopped'' because deputies had been warned that he was a murder suspect.

Officials later said that Hayes was not involved in the shooting of the deputies, and he has not been charged with a crime.

One resident, Reyes Valencia, who saw the shooting that left a bullet hole in his wooden fence, said he doesn't accept the apology.

"I'm glad they did apologize. It's not going to change what they did,'' said the 41-year-old Valencia, who has lived on the block for 35 years. "The guy didn't have a gun. It's no reason to shoot the guy.''

Baca said 70 to 80 shots were fired during the first five seconds of the confrontation. He said he believes some deputies emptied their guns while others fired once or twice.

The deputies are undergoing counseling and will return to work, Baca said.

Associated Press Writer Chris Nguyen contributed to this report.
