Linda, I understand where you are coming from. However I do have a 401k, that is where I believe I don't need that type of investing with my SS money. With more reward comes more risk. I risk my 401k money, not interested risking my SS.
I do think this should be voluntary if implemented.

Bigpee. I don’t look for your support. Nothing I said is hateful. Something’s may possibly have been mean spirited, always truthful. Most was written in jest. If I still had the A-List you would have made it. There were several people going out of their way trying for the honor so I shut it down.
As far as the original post. I don’t see any real reform suggested by the Democrats. I go back to the film I started with. If everyone paid a percent of everything they made. The percentage would be very low and the president’s suggestion to take part of said withholding and invest would not be a problem. The invested money would help the economy. They lefties could invest in kazoos made from recycled materials and the right in new concentration camps. Everyone would be happy.

Ron - I understand your personal reasons...and these changes most likely won't be affecting me, personally, either. It's just that I do believe 'others' should been able to make their own choices....even to opt out if they wish. That's the way it started out in Chile ...and I think much of the President's initial proposals were sort of a draft of that one. It's been very successful in their country.
And on the 'being safe'. I think that's what many don't want to 'see'. There's no guarantee with SS as it is now either. No one can promise you it will be there when your time to collect it comes.
Just look what the politicans have done with the funds....there's no account with anyone's money in it. It's all promisary notes to pay...no actual account. They've spent it all.
My sons, age 36 and 34 have both said they'd love to have the opportunity to invest a part of their own money. And they both work for companies that have 401k plans too. But not everyone does...and I don't feel that those who don't have the means to afford a 401k like program should be punished and FORCED to take the much smaller amount in their retirement years, because they are poorer.
