now BACK to the topic....

Defeat Bush plan first, Pelosi says
By Amy Fagan
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
May 18, 2005

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi yesterday said most Democrats approve leadership's strategy of not having their own Social Security reform plan for now and of focusing on defeating President Bush's plan.

obstructing what Congress is paid to do...take care of the SS problem.

She said only a few Democrats want to move ahead now with Social Security proposals to counter Mr. Bush's.
"Those are exceptions," the California Democrat said of Democrats like Reps. Robert Wexler of Florida and Dennis Moore of Kansas, who have proposed their own Social Security bills and say other Democrats should follow suit and engage Republicans with specifics.

gosh....two who do feel they could easily present their own proposals.....must be moderate dems
"Overwhelmingly, our members understand the unity that we have" in focusing on the message that Mr. Bush's private-accounts plan is a terrible idea, Mrs. Pelosi said.

FAIR ENOUGH...then present YOUR OWN...don't obstruct the work you'r paid to do

She said "maybe one or two people" want to pursue a different strategy for defeating Mr. Bush's proposal, but "we have over 200 people."
House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, agreed with Mrs. Pelosi that now is not the right time for Democrats to offer their Social Security plan, because Mr. Bush still is insisting on creating private accounts, and the president's effort must be stopped first.

THEN... get this one

"At some point in time, I think, we are going to offer alternatives," Mr. Hoyer said. "I don't think that time has come. The reason I don't think that time has come is because the president continues to press his position. We need to be confident that the American public makes it clear they rejected that alternative."
Opinion polls are encouraging to Democrats, he said, because the most recent one found that nearly 60 percent of Americans oppose Mr. Bush's proposal.

Mr. Hoyer also said Republicans are divided on the issue, listing 55 "frightened" Republicans who have not made clear whether they agree with Mr. Bush's ideas to create private accounts and to slow the growth rate of benefits for higher-income retirees.

mind you it's just ONE proposal he's offered...and ASKED for others to put their ideas forth. Could it be the dems HAVE NO IDEAS other than just raising taxes....and don't really want to say so before the 2006 elections?

But Republicans say the Democrats' tactic of simply opposing Mr. Bush without offering an alternative is a dangerous path to take. well...it sure hasn't caused them to be elected to Congress - maybe it's better it continues this way...their obstructing. Once again America will see they HAVE no solutions...only complains..objections and fill those vacant seats with MORE republicans.
"I think there's a political risk to only being an obstructionist," said Rep. Kenny Hulshof, Missouri Republican. "It allows constituents to question your credibility."
Mr. Hulshof said he doesn't support the Wexler bill, but is glad Mr. Wexler is offering a proposal because "this has been a one-sided debate to this point."
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Texas Republican, yesterday said more Democrats probably will follow Mr. Wexler's lead and buck their leaders' strategy.
But House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Thomas, California Republican, said a true debate on Social Security can't begin until Democratic leaders are willing to negotiate.
"I think you have to have something that Pelosi says is the Democratic position before you have meaningful dialogue," he said.
Mr. Thomas is working to craft legislation that not only addresses changes to Social Security, but also includes broader retirement-related provisions like improvements to pensions, individual retirement accounts and long-term health care. He predicts a broader bill will attract bipartisan support, but hasn't said definitively whether Mr. Bush's structure for private accounts will be part of the final bill.
------------

I don't think the democratic party learns from it's past mistakes. But that doesn't keep them from wondering WHY, oh why, they keep losing the elections.

You weren't addressing me, crowfarm so no need to leave me alone. You were copying everything that linda uttered to me and reposting it. Of course there is no rule to observe. I simply requested that you reconsider that tactic since I find it doubly offensive to read her trash not just once but twice.

Give me a break!

Don't worry colon...Crowfarm is tough. She knows that "most friendship is feigning, most love mere folly." I believe that she has a more important agenda here.

By the way, colon what's yours? Is it to post email spam? You do excel in that capacity.

BTW...Please excuse my misspelling of your name. It seems that whenever I think of you, I think of crap and that thought leads me invariably to the colon where crap resides and from there to related concepts such as bloating, inflamation and diarrhea and so, sometimes when I should type colin, I think of you and I type colon.

Forgive me... I'm doing the best that I can with what you have to offer.

And SHE'S the one who has repeatedly questioned why the 'right' can't communicate without name calling, insults, etc.

Why is it that name calling seems to be the only level on which the right wing can function?

But each and everytime...she does it herself.

Once again....back to the topic.

After reading cheryl's post of not wanting her tax dollars spent on the war.....

After reading fenix say some shouldn't be allowed to keep tax dollars from being spent on what many think would be helpful..ie; embryonic stem cell research...

After reading Ron say he doesn't want SS changed...and why...

I guess my question on private SS accounts would be....

why then, since the initial proposal was to have the OPTION to switch to a private account....OR the option to say with the status-quo, would you BLOCK it for others who do wish to have the choice?

IF it wouldn't change anything for you...why block it for other American's? Is it a control issue? Is it because you'd just NEVER vote for anything this President supports? OR ???

WHOA NELLIE! Hold the phone. Please find for me where I have stated that. I'm sorry Linda but that is a GROSS misrepresentation of anything I have ever said and I absolutely resent it.

Are you and Libra just hoping that people don't actually read your posts anymore? That is the only reason I can figure out that the two of you have decided to play tilt-a-whirl with my statements and opinions this weekend.

For the record.... I am wholeheartedly for Stem Cell Research and I don't think anyone short of a mojority vote of the nation should be allowed to keep tax dollars from being spent on it and I would appreciate it if you would refrain from portraying my views as anything short of that in the future.

fenix - Yes, in one of our two stell cell research threads...you did very much voice your thoughts about President Bush not having the 'right' to block what you felt most people want to see passed.

Of course, I am pharaphrasing here, on this post...and was on the one above.

You appeared angry that he could do so. That's what came across to me...and that's why I said it that way. As I'd thought about what you'd said in that stem cell thread...and see it no different that what those who are so against the SS accounts. Same thing...different issue/subject.

fenix - posted on May 21, 2005 02:16:07 PM
Ladies, you might want to read up on current events because there is a bill in the house right now to expand research perameters beyond those originally set by the President and straw poll results show that it has enough support to get through BOTH houses.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that he holds a minority opinion, Bush as stated that he will press his moral opinion over those of the public and both houses and Veto bill.
I think it is well beyond time that someone reminds him that he was elected as a representative of the people, not their moral compass.

So, in addition to me and Kiara, you've added fenix to your list of grossly misrepresented posters.

Linda - those two statements have absolutely NOTHING to do with each other. Your insistance that they do is either a result of blind ignorance or intentional misrepresentation. In the case of the second, I don't appreciate it and find it rather appalling. If this first is the case, if you are truly that incapable of understand ing my words it might best if in the future you refrain from referring to them or me in general.

fenix - I don't know what's got you all upset today...but I'll post ANY comparisons I see.

You were upset that Bush could veto the stem cell research...according to you...against what the majority want.

I'm saying that's NO different than when most American's wanted to see the partial birth abortions stopped...and our Congress did to...and passed that legislation.
THEN clinton vetoed it....

going against the SAME majority you speak of in this issue.

God...all you dems ARE going crazy.

It's the paraphrasing that leads to so much dissention. Everyone may get along much better if actual quotes were used or direct questions were asked about the meaning of a certain post if it isn't fully understood instead of someone taking it upon themselves to 'paraphrase' it with their own meaning or interpretation as has been done to several of us.

Most times it’s not any way close to what the original poster said or meant. This may be deliberately done with the full intent to draw that poster back again and again to defend his words. Or it’s done to try to portray the other poster to have much different beliefs than they truly do as has been done to me. Either way it gets tiresome.

JMHO

fenix - Linda - I see you edited your original statement.

Yes, immediately after pressing the 'post to thread' button. What'd it take...a minute or two after my original post.

Was the original actually the result of a typo and rather than admit that you just corrected it and hoped it would not be noticed?

Are we playing some sort of new game here, fenix. I've NEVER seen you like this.

Why would I hope a correction [of adding the letters "n't" made immediately following my initial post...be a problem for you?

Check out the times if this issue is of such GREAT importance to make you act like you are.
You're making a HUGE mountain out of NOTHING.

I copied and pasted the original Linda - why not just say it was a damn typo?

Why not just ASK me, fenix...when you felt I was saying something you hadn't said. I had no idea what you were even talking about...and why you were accusing me of changing what you'd said. I was trying to find the thread I'd post it in originally....and couldn't. PLUS, I was trying [several times] to be more clear on what I'd said. geeeze.

Meanwhile...you were going BALASTIC....acting like I've never seen you act before.
