I answered your question on the 4th reply on this thread. Anytime after that you could have asked that it be locked.

BTW, do you jay-walk?

I cannot believe some of what I am reading here on this thread.

No matter what you think you are required by law to correctly fill out that form.

If you do or do not that is your choice.

However please do not belittle those who do or do not follow the law as required.

It is your personal choice to do as you wish.

I do get quite a few people who ask us to lie about the actual value of the item.

This is not a Canadian bashing thread.

Adrian

Bill:

Oh.. that's right. And your FIRST post on this thread was <yawn> (AKA: rude).

(And then others posted more accurate quotes than what you had posted.)

What does Jay-walking have to do with lying on customs forms? Nothing

What does how much I report of my sales to the government have to do with lying on customs forms? Nothing

There was no need to lock this thread, as it was a topic of conversation. If you think this thread should be locked, then feel free to stop participating in the thread to keep it going.

Don't let EG push your buttons, Bill, I have lost interest in her holier-than-thou attitudes, given her use of multiple user IDs and names on this and other message boards. In a discussion of accountability it stands to reason we should be accountable for what we write.

FYI we 'lie' all the time on Intl Customs forms. More often than not we INFLATE the value of the item. We have learned that foreign customs officials seem to use some sort of a table of valuations (CDs seem to be valued at around $8-10 or so, very unscientific on my part, don't quote me). The customer who buys CDs from us for, say, $2 and is quoted $2 on the customs form has his packages opened and reviewed. He is then charged duty on $8 - $10. We have learned that putting a nominal value of, say, $5 on everything seems to put everything right.

We mark almost all our foreign packages as gifts. Shoot, we lose money on a great number of them. What would YOU call them?

would a less than $20 item really cost $70.00 after taxes??

Perhaps if you had simply asked that question, and left out the rest of the spiel, including your customers email, you may have found a quick & detailed response to your question?

I personally find the majority of your Canadian threads very anti-Canadian, even when you state they are not.

This thread being only one of many by you in the past 6 months.

If you find that lowering a value by $5 on a Customs form is the sin to end all sins, then by all means let your customer know that you won't do it.

Just spare the rest of us your constant crap about Canadian bidders, thanks, eh.

Hey, Jareth, care to let me in on all these ID's you seem to claim I have on here? This is my ONE AND ONLY ID that I use to post here. I told you this on another thread that you said the same thing, but it seems like you like to stir up trouble. Face it, the only reason you are "don't like" me is because I said I would never purchase from you because you have hundreds of NEGS. Get over it. And quit telling lies about me. If you're going to say something about me, make sure it's true first!

Reddeer: There you are! Funny how you made a comment on page 1 of this thread and ignored my question that I asked you directly. I could come here and say that ALL canadians are wonderful people and you'd (and your other canadian buddies) would find a way to make it look like a Canadian-bashing thread. LOL! I could have said this customer of mine was from Africa and you would have commented something else negative against me.

Do you tell EVERYONE on these threads who posts their buyer's emails here on these boards that they shouldn't have? Do you tell them "contact your buyer directly, don't post your crap here"? Nope. I am the lucky recipient of your rudeness. Don't worry, I take it with a grain of salt and move on. As much as you would love to make me absolutely loathe you, I don't! Have a GREAT EASTER, REDDEER!!!!!!

Question: "What does Jay-walking have to do with lying on customs forms? "

I ignored you because the answer seemed obvious.

IMHO you don't start these threads for help/advice, you post them to whine.

Here's some cheese, Happy Easter!

My opinion is that some threads are started on purpose just to bring a reaction. They are started quite "innocently".

Happy Easter to all.

EG

Had you simply asked the following in your initial post, my response would have been precise & to the point, and fully answered your question.

Now out of curiosity - would a less than $20 item from Canada really cost $70.00 after taxes?? That does seem quite high!

But no, that wouldn't have been dramatic enough for you, would it?

No one cares how you run your biz, anymore than they care how I run mine. If I spit on the sidewalk, I hope I don't get any on your shoes.

Everyone..

Please remember the basic rules of etiquette and address the topic and not each other. This thread is becoming argumentative and combative. Consider this a warning.

Just don't spit on a sidewalk on a Sunday, reddeer. That is still against the law in a certain Province I think. I can't remember which Province though.

Last I checked, anyone can post about anything ebay-related on this board anyway they like.

If I don't like a "way" someone posts, I would choose to ignore the poster and move on.

But then again, that would be the adult thing to do and it's obvious some can't comprehend how to act like that.

I did not turn the question of "Now out of curiosity - would a less than $20 item from Canada really cost $70.00 after taxes?? into something hateful. Re-read this thread and you can find for yourself who turned this into a hateful, rude thread.

Looks like I misunderstood your question. In your last post you ask: "Now out of curiosity - would a less than $20 item from Canada really cost $70.00 after taxes?? "

An item costing less than US$ 20 FROM Canada sent to the USA would cost less than US$ 20 plus shipping (and insurance if purchased.)

You are welcome.

Today I left my home after posting to this thread. It is beautiful in Wisconsin, sun shining and about 50 degrees. Then I come home to this thread. 45 emails and all I see is general conversation between Bill and his buddies. What does this have to do with what EG asked. I have lived in Northern Minnesota and have been to Canada many times and every time I had to go through customs. Not a very nice experience. Entering Canada they search everything, leaving Canada is the same all done by Canadian Customs. Stiff fines if finding items that are not supposed to be transported over the border. Well this is the same scenario with packages and sometimes letters. They find anything wrong they can fine you. Maybe you Canadians don't have the same experience as US citizens.
I do want to tell you I do pay taxes on my ebay profit. My ebay papers are filed with our taxes as is my mall space. I have not sold anything to a Wisconsin resident so I don't have to collect sales tax. At my mall space the owner of the mall pays the sales tax. If you think EG posts to many threads than why are you posting to them. EG- I will not lie on customs forms and I think it rather rude that they ask you to do it. Have a nice Easter everyone.

Libra---you must be some scary looking person. I've crossed the border hundreds of times, and I have never been asked more than a few questions and NEVER had my car searched.

And my American relatives are never searched either

When I lived in Montana, I crossed into Canada many times. Never searched once. Since I moved to Mass...went into Quebec...never searched. I was asked if I had anything to declare...I said no. They took my word.

This is getting weird.

Zazzie: Maybe YOU are a scary looking person and that's why they don't search you?

Libra: Thanks for your kind replies! I am used to these certain posters making my simple threads turn nasty. They do this just about every time. But it's ok - it does not mean I will post any less or any differently just to please them!

However, I do think that "ignore" feature is going to start getting a LOT more use!

Well, you were lucky. I am not a scarry person, please don't generalize unless you know. The only place I have gone through is in Minnesota so I can't tell what the other customs station do. But this is about lying not anything else and I am tell you that I would or will not lie on customs forms. In fact I will now put in my auctions I will not sell to canadian buyers. Why not stop the bashing and either get back on the topic or just ignore it. I think she has her answer. Why not start a new thread and call it bashing. I am sure you will get many takers. This thread is about lying on customs forms, not jaywalking or do you lie on your tax form.

At times they do search for guns, etc. as US citizens enter Canada. When you leave Canada again you go through the US Port of Entry (I think it is called that?) so there should not be any Canadian Customs agents there to search you on the US side? I have crossed many times, coming and going, and I have not had this experience.

Edited to say that I was searched one time on the Canadian side as I was wearing a black leather jacket and lots of silver jewelry and I guess I looked like trouble.

Now, FRENCH custom's in Geneva...that's a whole different manner.

That's odd, everytime I leave Canada, it's the US customs that question me. I have never been searched by either US or Canadian customs.

Into Canada through canadian customs, out of Canada through US customs.
