I've tried webwasher and the POW and I still get the popups.

But now I am getting 2 instead of one each time!

I had to finally uninstall the webwasher and POW so that I could play yahoo games.

Think of all the revenue AW must've made off our annoyance over the past 24 hours.

I'm turning off email notification so that I can read up on this without all these popups. I guess I'll chat with everyone in our yahoo auction club until this is over. Dang! I must be addicted....oh well.

Well, the pop under is still here for me this morning - I'm on an iMac running Netscape 4.73. If I turn off javascript, it seems to go away but that creates another problem. I just went to Create Auction, clicked on eBay, and then clicked on "continue". Nothing. Apparently javascript is necessary to "continue"???? Turned on javascript, tried it again, almost made it to the sell page and BAM, Netscape crashed again. I was really hoping to get some work done this morning....

aw i can only speak for myself. i come here to WORK. to make money not to shop. pop ups only slow me down and annoy people who use your service to make a living.
the pop up window has convinced me of one thing. i cant stand half.com , if this ad was a salesman knocking at my door all the time i can tell you he would be eating through a straw.

AN OPEN MESSAGE TO AUCTIONWATCH MANAGEMENT:

Your po-up ad is MORE than just annoying.

I get pop-up ads sometimes from other sites, but there is ONE BIG DIFFERENCE in yours: The AW ad DISABLES my computer. It freezes Netscape, freezes AW from further loading, prevents me from accessing ANY INTERNET SITE AT ALL until I re-boot my computer.

This INCLUDES preventing me from being able to properly navigate the AW site, I am having terrible problems even trying to do things like access the Control Panel, or add or delete photos from my image hosting database, which I have paid $200 annually plus continuing charges for, in GOOD FAITH!

Now I make my LIVING from my sales, so access to the services I have paid for is essential.

SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG HERE!

Either there is a major problem with your ad, with the code that is causing a large number of user's computers to freeze up, or whatever.

CERTAINLY THERE IS AN AW MANAGEMENT PROBLEM AS WELL! This, once again, is BAD BUSINESS.

Your quest for revenue DOES NOT extend to crippling your customer's computers, or preventing them from being able to utilize your services, due to something you have put into your site without proper thought or planning.

I have had to re-boot last night about 15 times, and this morning over 10 times. I uploaded 100 photos & during that process the computer froze 3 times.

The information your own Chris Barker posted is obviously untrue (and an AFFRONT), this is happening with great frequency, and is all over your site.

This is just the MOST DISGUSTING business practice I have seen here. I would not really mind the pop-ups, BUT -- I 100% PROTEST against the fact that when they pop up, they OBLITERATE the operational function of my computer. THAT is what is intolerable, and until you can fix THAT, your only option must be to disable those ads.

Believe me -- ads on other sites have NEVER affected my computer operations -- this is the one & only.

I don't want your paltry apologies.
I don't want to be told, if you don't like it, we would be happy to remove your account.

I simply want you to fix the problem that YOU HAVE CREATED.

Ahhhh here's the thread relating to my hassles! Hoped there was one somewhere.

I have a fairly new system on DSL, P-660 level, Netscape 4.x preferred browser. Also have had "Naviscope" installed, another flavor of add-on that includes ad-blocking. It leaves blank boxes visible so if you move the cursor over the box and hover there, the ad appears. It also does nifty things on Yahoo like pre-loading message board text, tracks network data, system memory load, etc.

This AW popup has been driving me nuts since what the ONE ad does (and I'm not sure if Naviscope gives it a different manifestation from what you others are reporting) is to crash multiple Netscape windows I have open. All net connections freeze dead. I can still close the Netscape windows down completely, but if I do so then boot Netscape back up, it's dead, frozen, not able to access the net. I have to do a cold boot to my entire system. Did it several times this morning, then decided to ID the ad that was killing me but as of right now haven't been able to get the "Killer" to appear again with multiple trips in and out of AW.

Did you guys disable this ad, or did I just luck out?

I have an older 16-bit system that doesn't run Naviscope OR advanced Java that hasn't had these crashes on a Netscape 3.0x version, but otherwise I WOULD abandon AW entirely.

Pfwwwwuppppp to any sites that use ads that do this stuff. You are NOT indispensible.

Edited to add: I spoke too soon. That #%#(*^$%#$@ ad crashed my other PC AGAIN when I POSTED this! I'd have to format a page covered with the Smilie that morphs into blue and purple and red screaming arm-flailing forms to express myself fully here.

Have read through many of the posts now. Sooooo this has been complained about for the last three weeks and the problem is just getting worse despite AW's early bland assurances this ad should appear once a week only?

Oh my cap's opening, I'm a mushroom, feeeed me! feeeed me! <<Plop>> Thank you, AW.

Btw, may I suggest a better term than "bug" for this flavor of ad-inclusion code? How about "prion"? It certainly makes my upper-grade Netscape foam at the mouth, bawl "Moooooooo" and fall over dead.

Edited to add: Wait a minute, I have a serious thought here! Maybe AW has a contract signed for a certain number of pop-ups total to be shown, and initially planned to ration these out at their discretion at a frequency that might've BEEN once a week. Now they want to satisfy the contract, get their money, but also get RID of this hassle... so they're pouring it into our systems over a week or two instead of strung out over a year, and hope they get their money by doing it that way!

Ok, ok...NOW I get it. By once a week they actually mean once a week for FOUR DAYS!

PS...Complaining to AW won't help cuz they don't care and can only pretend to care as the fact is, they are making money running this crap and that is the ONLY bottom line. So the empathy is wasted.

Could you check your older system to see which version of MRJ (MacOS Runtime for Java) you're using? On pre -OS8 systems, I don't remember it at all....

There's a bunch of extension libraries that loads with it and I'm starting to think there's a conflict in there somewhere when using Netscape.

I have had no problems using MSIE 5 on both 8.6 and 9.04 with MRJ 2.2.5 and WebFree.
Up until yesterday WebFree killed the popups but now I've had to disable scripting in MSIE preferences. As some have noted here, building and submitting auctions uses scripting on AW's pages so disabling it inhibits work....

Sounds like a real conundrum to me...

Sure makes for interesting reading though...

The Moderators for AW must be gone for the weekend, eh? The Engineers for AW must enjoy the weekend as well......and the weekend begun over 24 hours ago starting Friday morning, apparently.

Now, email notification will not disable without crashing the computer. This message is being posted so I can disable email "the other way".

Amazing how the AW Storefronts are being effected by all the pop-ups-unders and crashes. I am aware of several people (myself included) that were unable to access a Seller's storefront due to the crashing and the freezing. Seems to me, the FVF would be more profitable than AW agreeing to spamming its own users and site with measely Half.com ads.

My PC is like my purse---NO ONE has the right to mess with it. Not even you, AW!

I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO ACCESS THIS DAMNED BOARD FOR TWO DAYS AND IT KEEPS CRASHING....I JUST GOT ON ,MADDER THAN HELL, TO POST THIS EXACT SAME TOPIC.........the only way I can get on AW now is to disable javascript in my browser.....I realize that your pop up ads are generating income but DAMNIT....fix it so they don't keep crashing our browsers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There, I feel better!!!!!!!
toke..I found that when I disable javascript it seems to keep the browser from crashing..you might want to try that.

I'm writing this from IE 5.5 (and I HATE IE)
because I have been unable to get onto AW
for the last two days using Netscape 4.77
because of the pop-up (used to be pop-under)
ad. I can't begin to tell you how irritated I am that I have to keep re-booting my computer to clear this problem (Netscape
locks up completely). Please, please, please GET RID OF THIS AD, or reconfigure it so it doesn't crash Netscape. I thought I was losing my mind until I finally managed to get here and see that other people are having the same problems. I can't use any of the workarounds because I NEED pop-up boxes and JavaScript under some conditions, and I refuse to keep twiddling with my Preferences under Netscape every time I want to check the message boards on AW.

I am going to seriously start thinking of cancelling my AW account - this is the last straw - we're paying customers for cripes sake!

If I can be so bold, if AW can't find the problem, why not just turn it off. After all, if we are only supposed to get a popup once a week, I'm not "owed" one for the next 3 years.

I down loaded Pop Up Killer and Netscape still freezes up as soon as I come here.
And I still have the ad.
Pop up Killer didn't KILL anything for me.
Going to un-install it. Its just taking up space.

To lose this little bugger with Netscape.

Go to Edit, then Preferences, then Advanced.

Then UNCHECK the Javascript box. I also never run with Java enabled either.

I know for some of you this is NOT a real fix, as you can't function on AW [listing-pics-etc], but for those of you attempting to use the AW message boards only, it will solve the problem.

Joice ....... What's the word from the AW PTB? Surely they must be aware of the problem by now?

Well, I don't know if this is of interest to anyone, but I have never seen a pop-up ad from AW, nor a pop-under ad, either. I use Guidescope, which I got from www.junkbusters.com (it's free for personal use). But the downside is that I have to use a proxy server for it to be effective, and that makes my internet browsing quite a bit slower. It kills banner ads, invisible gifs, and cookies, too. (But it will allow specified cookies of your choosing.) Also my Netscape 4.73 browser sometimes crashes while I'm surfing ebay. I believe that's something in ebay's code that conflicts with Guidescope. Or it could be my old Windows 95 OS; or the fact that I have disabled any Active X thingies, if I ever had them. I also made all my Windows cookies files "read only," so even the cookies that I allow are only there in active memory during that browsing session. (I also turn my computer off every night, and empty my cache daily.)

To use Netscape you have to turn off Java, reject cookies, and disable images from loading.

It also helps if you go into IE and on Security disable all of the Java including scripting. Then go into the Advanced tab and disable Virtual Machine.Uncheck all three of the Java options.

Turning off Userdata persistance is a good idea too. (It can be a security hole anyway).

The problem is not just the Half.com html pop_under, (sans file extension) that loads. There are also 4 or 5 cookies and a Java script file that tries to load too. The cookies are from Half and Auctionwatch. They are called Bigipserver, Apache, and a few CF files to make the pop_under work. I can't figure out where the script originates.

Since this thing doesn't seem to crash IE it must be a code error or something as simple as a tag not being closed. We all know how finicky Netscape can be.

What ever it is someone's butt should be in sling for the sloppy way it was written and executes. The fact that AW has allowed these damm pop ups and unders is another matter.........

I almost forgot.....disable Active X where you can find it in IE and Netscape.

Turning off Java, ActiveX, etc,in IE as well as Netscape helps because IE is Microsoft and although the Spawn of Redmond denies it, turning stuff off in IE does affect how Windows works which in turn affects how Netscape works.

I appreciate the moderators acknowledging the problem. I hope they appreciate how irritating the problem is to someone that prefers to use Netscape.

Maybe whining and complaining doesn't help but it can't hurt (my wife's favorite saying.)
