camachinist, Not sure what to look for, my NS 3.xx isn't set up with the "Edit" pulldown showing Java preferences. Under Options, then General Preferences, there's a long list of gobbledegook that means nada to me... there's an "applications/x-javascript" followed by "js , mocha" I think I recall, might have that wrong. This is a 16-bit Win95 OS I'm running, too, so that likely changes which HTML flavors this PC can deal with.... I know various sites with very recent JAVA and Active-X stuff just freeze up on me from here... as a matter of fact an awful lot of eBay ads will crash this NS version. I can use their chatboards OK, and bookmark various sellers' auction lists, but going into the individual ads is asking for a crash. However, those sorts of crashes are cured by doing a Con-Alt-Del to close Netscape by itself... then I can reopen NS and it works fine here again. On my newer OS, Win98, 32-bit, I have to hard-boot the whole PC once AW nails one NS window.
How about a new motto for AW? Perhaps,
"All your Netscape is belong to us"?

Hi everyone,
My apologies for the malfunctioning ads- the agency which serves our ads is apparently having issues with cookie control on their ad servers. We've disabled the ads until we can get this issue resolved.

minx47: that is the best way. hit them in the pocketbook! im with you. i will never give them a cent. i dont think aw knew what they where in for and trust they see what a problem this is ,but halfdotcom knew what they where doing.
bugs dont happen by accident.
im sure aw already regrets the popup. but there is no excuse for the people at halfdotcom. none

The mixed blessing here is now a significant number of AW members who didn't know how to eliminate ads (both banner and pop up) know how to now....
This will likely mitigate their effectiveness as revenue generators in the future...
The other side effect might be the loss of some AW paying members.....
Thanks, Mark, for coming here and letting us know how it all ended...

When that popup comes back, as it surely will, I sure hope it's minus the spyware. That's a very nasty thing to lay on us...

I installed "Ad Subtract," and it seems to be doing the trick. I was going to install "Pop-Up Killer," but if it isn't working for you, Packer, then it probably won't work for me. Ad Subtract is real easy to find by doing an Internet search, or by doing the obvious stuff to their name to get to their site.

I haven't had that problem with the new version of iCab but will look for it...
When Yahoo mail was munging up MSIE and returning blank pages, iCab got right in there and got me my mail....
The user's ability to customize it is very versitile....
As a final note on the ad problem....
Folks can contact half.com here to express their opinions on our experiences.
Should anyone wish to contact AW's ad server, Real Media, they can do so here
All information was gleaned from AW page source code.....

AW Staff- Will you tell us when the ads will be used again? Here's the url for some spyware information to those of us that want to understand more.

I downloaded the pop up killer. It works--kind of. It deletes the pop ups almost as soon as they come up, but in this case you still get a brief glimpse of them and they still lock up my computer even though they are not visible. Of course since AW has disabled the ads now I haven't been able to test it again.
posted on July 8, 2001 06:44:17 AM newstan41...Several people on this thread recommended AdSubtract to eliminate this problem...THEY WERE RIGHT!!!! Yesterday, I had my browser crash TWELVE times in a few short minutes and I went ballistic.....finally got here by disabling my javascript...I tried several of those programs that I had seen here and the damned popup kept locking me up...I finally downloaded AdSubtract and WOW....its great!! I can go back to enjoying all these fine people over my morning coffee and I even left the sounds part on as it was music to my ears to hear the cannon fire everytime they killed one of those obnoxious ads....
And you don't even get a glimpse of them.....if you want to download it...just do the normal "stuff" to the adsubtract name...ie the 3w's and the normal end.....You will be glad you did......
Not Minx on Ebay!
You can test out your pop-up smasher on any Geo Cities free page.....tons of people have them and that little "Toto" always pops up to advertise something...
That was the first way that came to my mind anyway....

Minx47: Thanks for the tip. I downloaded adsubtract a few minutes ago, but have not had time to test it. I could tolerate the pop ups (although I didn't like them) as long as I could just X them off and go on, but when it comes to having to shut down and restart and redial the computer--that should be illegal.

I did find a workaround when Netscape froze up that did not involve disabling JavaScript or rebooting my computer.
(1) When Netscape freezes, shut it down.
(2) Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to get to the Windows
"Close Program" window.
(3) Go down the list of running programs. "Netscape" will typically still be on it even though it has been shut down.
(4) Highlight Netscape on the list and then
click the "End Task" button.
(5) Wait about a minute. A secondary window
will come up and say the program is not responding, what would you like to do?
Click on "End Task" again in this window.
(6) Restart Netscape, and voila! it is unfrozen.
Of course, Netscape will just freeze up again
once you encounter the pop-up window again,
so this doesn't help you in getting onto AuctionWatch, just unfreezing Netscape without rebooting your computer.
I discovered this workaround because Netscape was freezing up on me on parts of eBay, too
(typically while trying to load "ads.web.aol.com," which I think is some sort of banner ad hosted by AOL).
Now that I have AdSubtract loaded, I don't seem to be encountering either problem.
posted on July 9, 2001 10:06:26 AM newstan41....You got that right!!! ..I am sorry I did not load it MONTHS ago when I first heard about it here....I suppose sooner or later I will get tired of hearing the cookie cannon.... and mute it, but right now its just music to my ears.....

Minx47: Does yours kill the banner ads as well as the pop ups? Mine seems to do that. This is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I suppose pretty soon they will figure out some way to go around the adsubtract, but it sure is nice now. I too have my sound on and grin every time I hear it pop. Thanks again.

It's AW's popup ad. This was discussed before and AW's response to one was to write in and have support cancel your account if you didn't like it.>>
Get an add blaster program they blaster the adds before they pop up works great. The above is the reason, that atitude, I don't click on any ads at AW anymore. Because I use their message boards I used to click on the ads and used them to buy what I needed. I was loyal to that.
All the people I teach (older dealers) on how to sell on ebay I taught them AW. I don't anymore I teach them the program I use which is a free one (very good also). I started that they day I came in and got the pop-up add and the attitude. I did that as soon as I read the message from one of the AW people here write in and have support cancel your account if you didn't like it. Talk about no PR skills no tact and no class message.
It now takes me more time to teach them but if AW is going to try to throw the ads in our face forget it. I never liked anyone getting in my face and that is what the ads do. It is like a slap in the face you ask me and rude. Even it is only once a week.
It seems that if people hate pop up ads so much and they do that basic common sense would tell to get rid of them because it will lose more then gain in the long run.
I sell on half.com it ticks me off that they offer this kind of advertsing because from everything I have read it doesn't seem to attract customers but chase more away. I am there to sell.
posted on July 9, 2001 08:25:57 PM newstan41NOPE, no banners , no nothing....I DID have one page that had a popup show up when I was surfing and if that happens....your supposed to open the Adsubtract window and send the URL to them and I guess they add that to their magic list.....You echo my thoughts exactly.... in that I keep wondering how long it will take the nasty spyware to find a way around this....BUT, I figure as long as there is mutiny among the ranks... there will always be a person writing some kind of program to stop this crap.........at least I would like to think so.....

Javascript, bugs, cookies, and the largest glop of ad-related HTML I've seen. I've heard about and seen a lot about online ads and direct marketing in general, but have never heard of a pop-up campaign that manages to combine such huge helpings of massive, messy, intrusive, AND destructive -- all at the same time.
I've kept cookies disabled 95% of the time (third-party cookies 100% of the time), Javascript 98%, Java 99%, ActiveX (when I'm using IE) 100%, use HOSTS to "killfile" any new direct marketer I notice or hear about, and habitually hit ESCape when I start reading an article to disable any animation that remains from non-third-party images. Makes for a much more pleasant, relaxing, and useful Web experience. Not all of this will be practical for everyone, but there have been a lot of suggestions elsewhere in this thread, so I'd recommend experimenting and finding the best solution.
minx47: I think this is, at least in part, eBay's (Half's) attempt to get around the measures people have been taking. They've been sometimes ignoring preference settings on their own site, so trying to get around partial countermeasures off-site, by using such a complicated ad, does not seem such a stretch, IMO.
It is something of an arms race, and online browsing is getting to be the offline equivalent of going into a store, being watched by cameras, then having one of their "associates" follow you out of the building to the next store, while in between stores, there are billboards every 50 feet, each rotating, blinking, putting on light shows, and using cameras to take down your license plate, not caring much about how many "accidents" and how much outrage this all nets.
Yes, I'm exaggerating with this metaphor, but by how much? Someone mentioned "trust" in this thread. Privacy and/or security concerns are enough to turn off at least 50% of all Internet users from one or more purchases, and lots of "shopping carts" get abandoned partway through (for a variety of reasons, but who knows how many get skittish about security or privacy). I wonder how many billions the dot-coms lost over "trust" issues.
Personally, I'll take offline buying any day over the excesses foisted upon us online.
----
What's being done in the name of direct marketing nowadays is crazy.
The above are all just my opinions, except where I cite facts as such.
Oh, I am not dc9a320 anywhere except AW. Any others are not me.
Is eBay is changing from a world bazaar into a bizarre world?

My browser just all totally locked up after getting the dreaded ad about an hour ago.
Haven't been able to get in here since then , 'til now!! navigation kept being cancelled and server re-set , then total lock-up.
I had to go to one of my ebay listings and click on the AW link below it, that worked!
Even so , it's like reston_ray says, and that's how mine was, RR , yesterday too! Slower than a sloth, nearly 6 mins for pages to fully open. Played lots of free-cell, but listing? Forget it.
I've only been skimming the threads on this topic, as it didn't crash my IE 5.0 completely until tonight, but it has been ultra slow in AW and pretty slow to open ebay for 2 days.
Guess I'll have to utilise some of the many suggestions above..but if it's still getting through.......?
