Yep, it all depends. Actually, from what I've seen, the average international sale is often much more pleasant, since (at least for now) we are often dealing with the upper/middle class folks in a country, who are more likely to have internet access and have the ability/motivation/etc to attempt international purchases.
However, when problems do go wrong, they tend to be very, very wrong. There's nothing like an insurance/customs fiasco to ruin your day.

80% seems high, I have very few problems with international bidders. For some of the items I sell, they actually attract international bidders more than domestic bidders (Just had an auction end today with BIN to Austria)
I've had a couple of small, misdirected packages. Not a big deal, just replace the item. There are some countries that I would not send a larger package too without registering, but I am upfront in my auctions about that. I always tell people out of the US to get a quote before bidding.

I have traded with 23 Countries. All the trades have been in US$ as it is a Universal Currency. I either get US$ cash or more recently Paypal. A recent Paypal deal was $3.70 from Bermuda and I am very happy.
