About 60 miles East of Pensacola/ Escambia. Current trak had Ivan going into Pensacola, but please realize that Ivan can still go anywhere within the next 24- 48 hours.

If you are concerned about the kids, just call them and ask if they have lots of plywood yet <g>

Thanks, Ltray.

My son called his ex earlier today and she said if they had to evacuate she would. When Opal hit in 1995 he was still w/the ex in Pensacola. They went to Jax. (Took them 12 hours to get there...) Her parents stayed in Pensacola and didn't have a whole lot of damage. But Opal was a Category 3...

Edited to add: My son lives here now. Too bad she doesn't just send the kids out here.

I saw what Hurricane Camille did to Biloxi/Gulfport Mississippi. Looked like a nuclear bomb hit.

If you are in an evacuation area, please leave.

Bill,
I agree 100%. Discretion is the better part of valor. I think tomorrow would be a perfect time for the folks in the panhandle to catch a plane and visit Disneyland West for a few days.

Hi all,

First off, I'm going to make this thread eBay related. The Gouda vase sold to a lady who lives in New Orleans. She and I have decided it's a good idea for me to wait to send it until Ivan has gone away. I also have a buyer in Mobile I haven't heard back if he wants me to wait to send his package.

So, if any of you have buyers in the hurricane area, you might want to write them. They may want you to hold their package for a few days.

There - now it's eBay related.

That said, besides my grandchildren, I have a nephew in Pensacola. This evening I walked into my Mom's house for dinner. She was on the phone with the nephew and my son was on the phone with his ex and kids. They were calling to let us know they were evacuating. Sounds like landfall may be Pensacola.

Thanks, Maggie. My blood pressure gets a bit too high over in the RT. Are you on the coast of Mississippi? I vacation a lot in Biloxi, and have a lot of friends in the Prairieville/Gonzales, Ascension Parish area of Louisiana. Hope that Ivan loses a lot of strength out in the gulf, but not much chance of that, I'm afraid.

Maggie...Motels are booked all the way to Monroe and Shreveport. People are going into Arkansas and Tennessee. So, don't head this way.

All our shelters and nursing homes are getting ready for the people coming north.

I don't want to go through this again.

Maggie, I was typing when you were answering someone else. I know Picayune well. My grandmother was from Mississippi, Newton County. My great-grandfather was wounded at the siege of Vicksburg.

Lucy...Check the latest progress forcast map on page one of this thread. Looks like the target of the hour is Mobile. It's moving further west with each update. Good news for the panhandle, but not so good for your customer in Mobile or the folks in Ms. and La.

Etexbill, I'm surprised to hear that you know Picayune Ms..! You know, I lived in Houston Texas before coming to Ms.. and I survived a couple of hurricanes there too!
But this one looks bad.. I'm hoping old mother west wind will pay a visit tonight.. anybody old enough to remember that book.. LOL... Anyway.. good to hear from you again.. we are a bad bunch over at the RT..but we kind of grow on you, if you stick around long enough.. LOL...

Gtootie.. you are right.. I think I will pack up the dogs and head north west until I find a place... I think only Motel 6 takes pets... or if we miss the eye.. and the winds don't get to bad.. I'll hide under my bed and ride it out.. LOL.. Maggie

Maggie: you're right, Motel 6 will take the dogs. Don't try to hide under the bed if Ivan is going to come toward you. Southern Arkansas looks like a good bet. Maybe Texarkana, or East Texas, Longview, Tyler, Lufkin, etc.

Thanks, Maggie and Sparkz. I'm sure they'll be just fine.

I just heard from my buyer in Mobile. He wants me to wait to ship.

My nephew is in the big ship coordination biz. He decided to get outta Dodge when the marine advisories began warning them about the ships. He figured an that warning wasn't something to take lightly. And, seeing as how he previously captained ships everywhere from Alaska to Cameroon to Brazil, I figure he knows of what he speaks.

Here's the latest from the NOAA page:

AT 11 PM EDT...0300Z...A HURRICANE WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO COAST FROM EAST OF MORGAN CITY LOUISIANA
EASTWARD TO ST. MARKS FLORIDA...INCLUDING GREATER NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA.

Lucy...As of 11:00EDT the highest probability of landfall was Buras, Lousiana. The link I posted on pge 3 of this thread is also giving strike probabilities for three cities in Texas. I suspect that hurricane watch will be expanded during the 5:00 AM update. As the saying goes, It ain't over till the fat lady sings

Lucy,
I forgot to add, when you do finally ship to Mobile and N.O., I would send them FedEx Ground. Reason being is the tracking system. There will probably be extensive flooding and some deliveries will get hung up at sorting facilities. With their tracking, you will as least be able to advise the customer of any snags or delays.

Sparkz, I saw that reference to Buras, LA.

Tex, where is it?

And thanks for the tip on shipping FedEx. May just do that on the vase. The Mobile package is first class and not all that pricey so not a really big deal.

Lucy, Buras, Louisiana is on the delta that runs into the gulf just below New Orleans. New Orleans is actually below the level of the Mississippi that runs through it and is protected by levees. You have to bury people above ground in New Orleans because of the low water table.

Hi Everyone

The folks in New Orleans are headed this way. Even if Ivan doesn't hit there they are expecting waves (I just got up and can't think of what they are really called, but you get the idea) to be as high as three stories. They also have an antiquated pumping system, so they can expect major flooding.

Has anyone heard from Maggie this morning? Longview and Tyler may be her best bet. At least she will be on an interstate all the way. She needs to get on the road though. Once the folks from NO get started it will be bumper to bumper and a slow go all the way up the state. That's one of the things they are worried about. When that many people head out at the same time, they could get stuck on the road when/if Ivan hits.

I also heard that most motels lift the ban on pets during evacuations. You would hope so anyway.

Right, and if I were in an evacuation area around Maggie's location, I would go north and take I20, I10 out of New Orleans will be a madhouse. There is one area of I10 that is a bridge over the Atchafalaya Swamp that is 18 miles long. If that gets clogged, watch out!

This is so stupid. They issued a mandatory evacuation for the beach for today at 11 and everything is closed! Super Walmart - which never closes is closed.

The hurricane is not even coming close to here!
