"O God, when I have food,
help me to remember the hungry;
When I have work,
help me to remember the jobless;
When I have a home,
help me to remember those who have no home at all;
When I am without pain,
help me to remember those who suffer,
And remembering,
help me to destroy my complacency;
bestir my compassion,
and be concerned enough to help;
By word and deed,
those who cry out for what we take for granted.
Amen."

I'm REALLY THANKFUL to all the kind folks on this board who have been so helpful over the years. I sell consignment items and get a WIDE variety of items so there's no way I can be even a "semi-expert" in all the areas. People on this board have freely given of their time and expertise to help "educate" me..so...THANKS ALL and I hope your Thanksgiving is a special day for you all!

You said it, blueeyes! We who dabble in the universe of collectibles and consignments learn new things regularly but have mountains of info we can't possibly research. These people have been absolutely wonderful, and it's very seldom I can be of any help to any of them.
Love Thanksgiving--the purest of American holidays, untainted, as of yet, by commercialism. (I guess the turkeys wouldn't feel so great about it, though.)

I was up at 4:30 this morning to put the turkey in the oven, so the waiting game has started. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Thank you, too, for the wonderful Yam recipes in that thread. I'm trying the one with the apples and raisins today. It's all ready to pop into the oven.
Snow, snow everywhere! The east side of Cleveland expects up to 6 foot drifts of snow. We were lucky with only about 2". Not so lucky last night when a manhole cover blew off down the street from us. Sounded like a bomb going off.
Enjoy!

did anyone see the story on cnn last night about the hazards of deep frying a turkey? it sounds awful to me (all that grease in the cavity), but my hubby says they're delicious.
apparently, people tend to put the deep fryers a little too close to the house and put in a little too much oil. and poof! in under four seconds, a rather impressive fire ensues. a doctor in california had over $100k of damage to his house from one of these deep frying adventures. and they had some firefighters demonstrate how difficult these grease fires are to put out.

Cheryl: I was about to tell McJane that I'm trying the yams and apples with raisins. I doubled the recipe, put it in a rectangular baking dish. Baked it halfway last night, refrigerated it, and will finish it today before going to our friends' house. So far it looks and smells delicious. Full report AFTER the meal, of course.
Edited to add: I cheated on the yams. I have some arthritis in my hands and dreaded cutting up raw yams, so I bought three large cans and used that.

roadsmith- I boil my sweet potatoes whole until they are cooked. I let them cool down and then slide the peels off. I then easily slice and arrange them in a baking dish with mandarin oranges and sliced pecans. I make a brown sugar glaze and pour this over the potatoes.

Twig: I was too lazy to get yams and boil them first. Next time I'll try that.
But I want you all to know that that recipe was a huge hit at our friends' house! It was very delicious, and using the canned yams made it even easier. We had 11 at dinner, and doubling the recipe into a rectangular baking dish was the perfect amount. This recipe is definitely a keeper.
Cheryl, I hope you liked it as much as our crowd did!

Roadsmith...What I wanna know is how you could keep a straight face when you told all those people that it was an old family recipe that you had made hundreds of times before
