Wow - I put up a bunch of books that a co-worker gave me and got my first sale tonight - what a nice surprise!!!
8) I may have to move some from half.com over to amazon, and see if I have better luck - do other book sellers list in both place to try to make sales???

katiyana,
Congrats! Why not crosslist the same items on Half.com and Amazon Marketplace? More eyeballs for the same item. You can also do it on Yahoo's new Warehouse site when they open next month (that's when it opens, right?).
You just have to remember to delete items off the other venues when it sells. Shouldn't be too much of a problem unless sales all of a sudden explode!

I'm seriously thinking of doing that - I have held off exactly for that reason, what if it sells at 2 places at the same time?
Yes, I know the chances of that happening are probably slim.. Hmmm..
Now that Half.com has their system bug fixed, I have to do some shuffling anyway, I might seriously do that.
Of course, with Amazon's stiff fees, I'm only selling books I got for free so any $ received is profit but still.. 8)
I'm kinda happy that I'm getting activity in other venues - I so desperately want to avoid being Ebay dependent.

Remember that if you are successful you can sign up for a Merchant account and lose the 99 cent fee on each sale. It's $39.95/month. I cross-list and it's rare for a book to sell on half.com first.
Earlier last year half.com was much more viable, but not for months now.

there are thousands, millions of high-quality books that will sell nicely on either Amazon or ebay. You don't necessarily run into them at yard sales or booksales, but OTOH, often you do! One of the best pieces of advice about the book business is to think in terms of what people DO, their hobbies, interests, collections [etc: watches, bonsai, vintage computer components, etc].
Quality books will be special to them because of photos, collectible details, hard-to-find details, learnedness, rarity, etc. I personally find this easier to grasp than the weird and woolly world of first editions.

Thanks for the great advice, keziak! I stink at selling books, probably because I have no idea what the heck I'm doing in that area! Will try and use your advice. Now don't go giving away all of your secrets before you leave! BTW, will miss your posts and advice. You were one of the best on the board! Good luck in the future!

amzn auction is for more than just books,it is like ebay .
unfortunately there are not too many bidders and the products are not that interesting -lots of mass produced items.
yes,you can find some interesting books at garage sale, but then you find much more non interesting books.

I make my living selling books on-line. I started selling on Half.com exclusively. After reading various threads on AW and other boards I decided to try cross listing on Amazon.com. My first attempt got no sales and I was very disappointed. I tried again and received no where near the amount of sales as I did from Half.com but I hung in there and kept adding inventory to Amazon. Eventually sales started coming in fairly steady from Amazon.com and now sales are doing well. Between the two I really can’t complain to much although sales are way down from pre 9-11.
In all the time I have cross listed I only ran into a problem once but all you have to do is go into Half.com and cancel the order or into Amazon and refund the order if that becomes necessary. The main thing is if you are cross listing to keep on top of your closed sales and make sure you remove the book from the other site. If you sold xyz book on Half.com make sure you go into Amazon and take it off your inventory.
