I just had a great run of auctions, but with 2 "minor" (well, ONE major) mishaps.
I just sold a batch of postcards that have been layin around, all classic cars.
I was PayPal'd today for one, and the winner sent $5 for shipping!!! Auction read 50 cents, so I PP'd her back the refund. Scary part was she didn't think twice about $5 shipping for an item that sold for $4.50!!!
The next one is REALLY weird!!!!!
On another Postcard auction of a classic car I sent out the EOA e-mail, and recieved this back: (sorry for the caps, but I just caut and pasted this so I would have the EXACT wording)
HOLD IT HOLD IT
I M ONLY INTERESTED TO BUY THE CAR & NOT THE POST CARD SORRY IF WE BID ON A WRONG ITEM
WE ARE VERY VERY SORRY BUT WE ONLY WANT TO BUY THE CAR
THAN YOU,
My e-mail response was:
Did you really think you could buy a car for $5.50....This auction has been completed, and you are now obligated to follow through with the transaction. I have already incurred fees from eBay for the sale of this item.
I am sorry if you bid on the wrong item, but we need to find a way to resolve this.
I cannot get my fees back from eBay without telling them that "bidder did not pay", which could mean a black mark on your bidding history.
Please let me know how you wish to proceed.
Thanks!
Keith
What would YOU have done, and how do you think I should proceed from here? I KNOW that I can get fees back from eBay easily but GOD, how stoopid do you have to be to bid on an item that says "XX (Car) Postcard" in the title and think you were bidding on a car !..Would ANYONE start a 65 Mustang (not the car in the auction) at $2 with no reserve, and NOT EVEN have it listed in eBAy MOtors?
BTW, the bidder has a total of 3 feedbacks, so I know they are new, but GEEEZ!!!
Thanks for the response!!!
Keith
I assume full responsibility for my actions, except
the ones that are someone else's fault.
Thanks Bor!!!

ubie,
It sounds like you're handling the situation fine so far. If they don't follow through I would just go through the whole FVF/leave appropriate feedback route.
This person MUST have known what they were bidding on. The item title was clearly stated and I assume it was in the right category.
Sounds like you have an inventive deadbeat on your hands

What kind of a car can I buy for $4.50 and $.50 for delivery??? Whatever it is I'll take two. I'll even go the $.85 insurance for each.
Got any more?? I'll call my brother. He has 2 teenagers and I know for $4.50 he'll buy each a car of their own.
You are truly a kind and generous guy.
Would you happen to have 430SL convertable??

If they are really serious they must have been jumping for joy.
If they bid just to be funny, it's not funny and they should pay. If they don't, you should follow through will the process.

Or a Gull Wing.
Nice car but not much room for a family. I did try to start a family in one once but that's a story for another thread.

Maybe he thought he had bid 5.5 million dollars--tell him to send a cashiers check and then go out an buy him the car and keep the "change." Who's the stupid one here?

magazine_guy,
LOL!
ubie,
Nope, checked outside..no full moon.
Maybe you could find one of them in a matchbook size car & send it to them!
Can't you use the "buyer/seller agree not to complete this transaction" reason to get your FVF back? It doesn't count against the buyer in this case.
If they seriously think they can buy cars on ebay for $5.50..they aren't going to be around too long anyway.

Keith ROFLMAO! That one tops them all!
I'm tellin you there has got to be something in the water lately. I've never had sooooo many odd/wierd buyers as I've had lately. Two different people paid me with Paypal and sent money orders as well. I've never had non-payers - until this past month - now I've got four. Never got a hot check in well over 500 transactions - got my first one this month. Getting emails from people asking me for info that is already in the auction - never had retractions - got 3 this month. And, had two buyers inform me that they found the books cheaper on Amazon and that I was ripping them off - like I forced them to bid.
It's eerie

ubiedaman: just one note to your story - the UBB syntax. The rule is, is that you must not have any spaces or carriage returns on either end of the coded text.
You coded it half-right. At the end of your first quoted paragraph, you needed to add and a to the beginning of the second quoted paragraph.
Here's a helpful page for you to look at:
http://www.aota.net/ubb/ubbcode.html
Hope that helps!

One other weird thing with this batch...I had a "bidder" e-mail and offer $30 if I eneded an auction for a CD...I e-mailed back that "sorry, I don't end em early", and invited him to bid..he got the item for $17.50!!..In my EOA, I suggested that I go ahead and end the auction now, and he just send the $30...lol!

Have you checked his feedback properly??. Ok I was bored so I looked up your auctions and saw the one you sold to this guy. The guy has 5 negs and 1 neutral and has been accused of everything from selling out of date film to bait and switch operations.
I would stick by your guns on this one and file for FVF when he dosen't pay and then NEG him.
People like this make trouble for all of us.

Meya,
The Mercedes Gull Wing doesn't have a back seat. If you can afford one, you can afford the second car to haul the kids, dog & nanny around in.

~ ~ ~ ~
Sorry, folks -- I do NOT believe that the general public is quite this stoopid.
This is simply, imNsho, an excellent example of AUCTION Sabotage.
There are many many many many online and offline businesses that want US to fail.
They not only wish to disrupt seller's eBizzes, they also are bound and determined to make eBay Users look like stoooooopid morons who populate the tents behind trailer parks.

oh, I can beat that. I once auctioned off a postcard which showed a jet engine display in a boston museum, and some guy bid on it and then complained that it was not a real engine, just a postcard -- accused me of "pulling one over on him". I guess he thought it was a real deal, a GE aircraft engine for $3.00.
thing is, I never put "postcard" in my auction title -- takes up valuable space. Instead, I list them under 'postcards', and figure that will clue people in.

Maybe they want one of those little model cars? The email also sounds like maybe English is a second language? Doesn't change the facts, but I know I had trouble reading and understanding the German auctions that popped up on me awhile back. I was tempted to bid too! The pics were good, the items were fantastic, BUT I couldn't figure out the "shipping" so I passed.

OMG, what is with people! The first year I lived in Florida I worked in the Accounting Dept. at a timeshare resort. We had a guy that refused to make the mortgage payments on his condo because he didn't get a ride in the space shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center like his timeshare sales person promised...LOL! Yeah right, "Sign up now and we'll send you to Mars round trip." The salesperson did not in fact promise this, she simply stated that his condo was only a 30-40 min. drive to the Kennedy Space Center.
