Well, this fiasco happened just as I was
about to upgrade to a business account anyway and use Web Accept on my new
website which will be up in 2-3 weeks. Now I'm really nervous about letting any
amount of money sit in PayPal, besides giving them additional info.
Can anyone recommend a good, reliable merchant account with reasonable fees? (for website & auctions) Most all of my
business will be under $12 so I hate to be
eaten up by fees. Thank you for any suggestions!

books--

I use Nova. MC, Visa, American Express & Discover. I pay between 1.8 and 3.0% for each transaction, depends on the credit card. I use PC Authorize software, input the card info using my computer at my home, settle the batch, send and within 2-3 days the money is in my bank account.

I signed up for this service through a local business where I live. That's all they do, set up merchant accounts. You might check your phone book for Nova or CardService and see if there is a business like that in your area.

If not, here are some #'s:

Nova Information Systems, Inc.
7300 Chapman Highway
Knoxville, TN 37920

423-577-3400 office
423-577-1170 fax
1-800-725-1243 cust serv

I used CardSevice for 2 years before switching into Nova the first of this year. Nova was cheaper than CardService, which is the only reason I switched. I have this info from an old CardService business card:

CardService International
PO Box 2310
Agoura Hills, Ca 91376
800-456-5989
818-880-9890 fax

Again, I would check locally first. Good Luck!

someone in another string recommended paydirect.yahoo.com (i think that's the right address, if someone else wants to make a link to it). i signed up last night. bottom line: there are no fees now for auctions or web sites, if there are going to be fees later, they'll give you advanced notice. give it a shot.

I second the recommendation for Nova Information Systems. Great company to work with.NEVER ever lease equipment or software, it's much cheaper to buy.

And for your website sales, send EVERYTHING using a method where someone MUST sign for the package. Also educate yourself on fraud. It happens.

www.verifyfraud.com and www.scambusters.org. Scambusters has a special article in this issue on ecommerce fraud.

You can check out the warehouse clubs like Sams and Costco. Both offer merchant accounts at reasonable fees if you are a business member.

I take that back. I just got off the phone with Sams and they won't even allow auctions. They will do websites but they are not set up for e-commerce at this time.
