Hello AW community--it's been a day or so since the ax fell on all of us using Paypal. (Yikes--another paypal thread---) Anywho--I realize that AW posters are just a small sampling of on line auctions in general--but my interest is piqued. How many actually told Paypal to take their fees and lies for a hike?

Me--did it Tuesday Night when this whole bru ha ha surfaced and I got that most poignant message from paypal when I logged on. (If I had it to do over, would have made a hard copy print out of my account--cause once I unregistered--that was it--no getting into my account again.) But--on the good side--checked with my bank today--and paypal honored all the direct deposits that were due. Whew!!

So I am back to checks and MO's---how about you? Did you actually really tell paypal to take a hike and get out of your business and your bank account? Just wondering---don't like to be alone in this issue. But if I am---so be it--Paypal sure told some fat whopping lies.

Moderators--please don't lock this thread--k?

gosh jeanu we must have been posting at the same time. I took other affirmative action, but it amounts to the same thing. I still have 2 checks to collect from PayPal, (a nice one came in today...2 more to go, and then I am right behind yu in line! Affirmative action is the key! ^5's!

This post is related to the way we accept payments for our Ebay auctions.

We did not have to do as you did because we took the longer view and waited, when this Lapyap started. Checks and MO's were good and still are.

Paypal was smart....rather than advertise, they just went out and bought their clients for 5.00 each and made the service free. Nothing motivates most than free or better yet something for nothing...and CASH....WOW~!

I have yet to see any site on the Web that says that there TOS are permanent. Was Paypal any different? It is doubtfull. they changed their TOS....so what? They got bought....and anything that the old crew had said or promised went out the window with the old ownership. Such is life.

You stay to suit yourself.....when you don't be suited....you goes!

[btw- let us know when you find abother similar service that is less expensive and as well funded as Paypal]

Well Jeanyu, after having thought it over, and having read more of the threads, I canceled my account late last night. I think they are full of Bull all the way around.

I'm in the process of dropping Paypal. I just finised taking their logo out of my current auctions that don't have bids yet, and the auctions that are scheduled to launch tonight. I do have several current auctions with bids, so I'll have to honor those, if the winning bidder wants to use Paypal. After that, it's back to checks and money orders for me.

I'm still going to use PayPal.

I requested a check for my account balance yesterday, but only because I'd been planning to do that anyway.

I paid for an auction purchase last night using PayPal.

This morning I gave them my bank account number because in the future I'd like to use the services which require that (having payments debited from my bank account etc.) I'll be verified within a couple of days when their little deposits come in and I confirm them.

I feel a little uneasy about signing up for a "premier" account only because I feel like if I do that then I should officially make this a business, but it has definitely been hobby territory until now.

I "did it" on August 3, when the verification fiasco began. I told my colleagues and customers, and made a lot of noise over here too, until I got sick of being told to shut up, that it was "not a big deal" and that Paypal would never go back on its word.

But I "did it" again today when I added a "NO PAYPAL" logo to all my auctions and a clickable link to the Paypal threads so folks can make up their own minds.

I've cut my selling dramatically - only a couple larger-ticket items per week now because I hate listing Funny, the auctions closed on Monday and I've already got money orders in hand for both....

I am still on the fence. My husband thinks the bidders are for the most part unaware of the Paypal diaster and will favor sellers who accept Paypal, especially for impulse purchases. I can't argue with his logic.

On the other hand, I want to be indignant and cancel my account with them. I know that the have wiggled around and broken their word.

Another thing is I wasn't real comfortable getting verified. Their access to my bank account is distressing because I can't trust Paypal.

The information they want from me to upgrade is more troubling to me than the fees. Could Paypal really be an IRS sting, and we're being tracked to see if we report on 1040????

Ummmm--rrayburn--and what are we smoking tonight? Naw---paypal is not an IRS sting--just a greedy ecommerce business. Besides--nothing to worry about--just cross your t's and dot your i's

The buyers will be charged next. It is very easy to justify. A quarter is cheaper than a stamp - but look instead for 50 cents - cheaper than a stamp and a MO...

They are not an IRS sting -- but if you give them your SS# they may be obligated to report your transactions to the IRS if asked. At least I believe that's the case, since I've heard banks are similarly obligated.

I don't think buyers will ever be charged. Credit cards have been used by buyers for years with no cost to them. It's the merchants who pay.

Besides, stamps don't "count."

Oh dear--five, count em, all five of us that have told paypal and their lying ways to shove it--looks like about two are ready to--but words are just words. To you four that have told paypal to shove off--you have my admiration--but---you did anyways for your wonderful info given beforehand and the courage of your convictions. VM--oldstuff-HCQ--Maui--great minds think alike?

So to the population at large? Have you ditched paypal or still hanging on?

Right now, I'm hanging on, at least until the last of my withdrawal requests goes through. I checked my bank account and a bunch went through yesterday but I have one that's been held up in a pending status for a while now. Yikes!!!

Not skyline8 on eBay.

I've removed PayPal from my auction template and I'm canceling my account as soon as the last auction on which I've already offered PayPal is completed.

I just don't trust 'em. No sir, not one bit.

When they have to start paying, many of the others will balk. Bottom line, it just cuts to deep into the profit. I learned this when we sold exclusively in Zshops last Christmas. We sold TONS and everyone paid by 1-click. They were the first to let little sellers accept a charge and I loved it.

However.

The fees were staggering.

We decided to run through Christmas and then pulled out. There are only so many people auctions sellers can make rich.

Count me as undecided.

I have taken their logos off my auctions without bids and have signed up for Yahoo! PayDirect. I guess I will wait and see what the bidders want to use. I think PayPal is pretty sleazy, and there is no way I am going to get "verified" or sign on for a Business or Premier account. I'm also not letting lots of money sit in my PayPal account, either. I was building up a "play money"/Christmas shopping fund but I have transferred most of it out now.

I want to close my account, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot and lose potential bidders, either...

From my standpoint as a seller based outside of the US, I will personally welcome PayPal with open arms whenever they do go international.
The charges being quoted are far cheaper than anything that is available to any international seller.
It seems to me that US sellers have been spoon fed with free this and free that. Let's be realistic, there's no such thing as a free lunch and if you ever believed there was then you have been kidding yourselves.
The costs involved are just another part of doing business. The level of service provided to both buyers and sellers make that cost well worthwhile.
It seems to me that you are miffed not because of the fees you now face but because you feel you've been lied to. I can understand that.
However, as miffed as you are, by pulling out of PayPal, I think that you will be cutting off your nose to spite your face. It is still a very cheap and efficient service that lets you conduct easy transactions with your customers.
It is time to be realistic. Sit back and asses how your business could be affected if you withdraw the PayPal option to your customers. It seems to me that many of you are making emotive decisions rather than business decisions. Whatever you decide, please think about it carefully. Don't let emotion cloud practibility.

Bob, Downunder but never down.

I am only a bidder, so I probably don't count in your survey, but,

I have not used them, and in the future I intend to stay away from auctions that accept them. The fees have to come from somewhere, so why should I pay for a service I don't use?

I'm keeping mine open. Course still take checks, money orders, and.... the dreaded Billpoint too ..... BUT in all the time I've had the Billpoint logo (I use only the small one at the bottom) I've had about 2 people use it.

And if everyones taking PP off thier auctions, I've said it before, I'll pay with money order then, if I really want the item.

Bob - I did not close my account because I am mad about being lied to and so I cut off my nose, or anything else I need.

I closed my account because I do not trust them. They scare me. The risk (and the stress) are not worth the reward. I am not shady, or devious and so I don't hang with those who are. The net result is a sink not a source.

Heres an idea...thought I would share it. Before I joined paypal, I took checks and money orders. Some folks wanted to send money orders, but politely told me that it cost extra, so would I mind a check? (I do take checks, but they wanted their item FAST, and figured I would hold a check). So, I told them I would DEDUCT a buck from the total if they wanted to do the money order thing. Now, since I dont do paypal anymore, I REALLY dont think I will lose customers just because of that. Yes, it was easier, and faster. But for 2 years, I didnt HAVE paypal, and I see no difference except for the speed in which things are paid for and shipped. If someone doesnt bid just because I dont have paypal, then I dont know what to tell them. I CAN offer to deduct the buck, IF they want it shipped quickly and send a money order. Anyway....I see no probs of missing out on customers just because I dropped paypal.

Count me in on the Paypal deletion. I haven't canceled as I have to get some money from there, but I put on my auction sites that I wasn't using it anymore and why.

Although I did sign up for Paypal way back when, I never used it as a seller. I kept thinking about it and thinking about it, and reading the scary stories some people were posting here... and I figured, with my luck I'd be one of the unlucky ones and have something horrible happen to my money LOL... in the past couple of weeks I'd been seriously reconsidering because I used PP a couple of times as a buyer and liked the convenience.

However, I am now VERY glad I never started accepting PP payments. I agree with everyone who says they're the best deal around fee-wise, but I don't trust them one iota. There is NO WAY I'm giving my bank account info to a company that has behaved in such a deceitful way. I've already seen one thread about a bidder who had their payment taken out of the wrong account, without their permission (see this thread: http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=255790). That just makes me too nervous.

Going to continue to offer it for as long as my customers want it just like I do with BillPoint.

To me, it's just another cost of doing business & mine is a business.

I'm still on the fence at this point BUT only because I've been reading the posts here and throughout AW. (Glad to have AW here for us to share ideas). I can go back to ck's, M.O.'s or run it through our own merchant account. We were able to keep the average 3% by avoiding our merchant account by using PayPal but.. PayPal is only a convienence item, not a necessity to us all. So, shame on PayPal for hiding behind the veil.

I accept
cash
mo
cashier check
signed up with Yahoo PayDirect

Pulled all of my money out of PAYpal for the first time since it started (I have been with them from the beginning)

I pulled the logos from my ads.

I intend to try to convince my customers to check out PayDirect.

I will not upgrade to a business account because I am not a business.

I considered opening a business account if we ever see international options--with a different e-mail than the one I use for auction correspondence just for the international customers to utilize.

Other than the international, I am not going to give them free advertising and I won't allow them to use funds for the "float" any longer.
