"EBay users sold $1.3 billion of goods through the site that quarter, a 108 percent increase over the second quarter of 1999. The site's 15.8 million registered users conducted 62.5 million auctions during the period, eBay reported. The average price of an item sold over the site is about $21, so it's not exactly Sotheby's or Christie's."

I guess what the writer did was divide total dollar sales by the number of auctions and came up with the $21. per sale average.
That approach does not take into considerstion that not all items sell.
If the average of posted auctions that end in a sale is about 50% then the average sale per completed auction is about $42.00, which are near the numbers that have been reported previously.
I would like to know who made the additional 15 million sales. I know it wasn't me.
