The only free service I use is the Honesty counters, and now they are causing my auctions to freeze, and unless the bidder knows to hit the stop button, they cannot bid.

I have seen many auctions were the free hosting of pics cause the same problem, and as a bidder I hate the auto responce fill in the blanks invoices, I will not use them, as I know that they sell my informatiom. Any more thought on this? Ed

The more sites you link to from your auction page, the greater your chances are that one of them will not be working properly. The only solution, if you are to avoid the problem entirely, is not to use them. Then all you have to wory about is whether or not eBay itself is working.

Personally I do not trust certain sites such as Honesty or AW to host my pics for me.

If they are having site problems, down time, or just regular maintenance it hurts both the seller and bidder (seller more, obviously).

I have an account setup with geocities.com and strictly use them to "hold" all my auction pics.

Hadn't had a problem yet...

I registered with them (Geocities) to do that, but their terms say you can't link to them from an external site, so I went with MSN Communities instead. I am too afraid of what happened to all the people using Angelfire to host their pics a few months ago...

Had to clarify who "them" was...

edhdsn - Well to begin you get what you pay for. I have always hosted my pictures on my own web space. I use my own counters from that web space and have a site on the front end of that web space. I am hoping paypal comes up with a paypal shopping cart instead of its current format for those payments and I will cheerfully buy that software from them.

My servers have a 95% up rate and if they go down I have a central point to whine about things not working. I strongly suggest that any serious ebayer wean themselves away from free services.

1. They market your name.
2. You can't get too upset they are free.
3. They can't stay free forever since they cheifly rely on ad revenue from banners and click throughs to exist.
4. Hosting your own on paid space gives you more control over your options and how they work.
5. If you also have other interest and the like you can use the front end of that space to do a great deal of things. Like I was about to experiment to with a home page that linked all my auctions on the various auction sites together on the home pagewith pictures and links. Sort of like the ebay gallery except you could see my yahoo and MSN Auction offerings too.

The only time I have had a problem, was when using my ISP to host my graphics: they removed all my pictures after "running out of bandwidth allocated me"...No warning....Just Zap That is when I discovered AW, then others, and rotate, depending on the scheduled maintenance time....However, I do not use any Auction-producing software. I like making my own from scratch.

I am profundly mistrustful of anything that's advertised as free. I have been using Auction Manager since it seems to be pretty good software. There is a lot of excellent freeware and I don't mind their advertising stuff.

For the last several nites I've noticed that listings with pics hosted on honesty or geocities are not showing the pictures. Even hitting refresh a few times doesn't bring the pic in.

I use a combination of my own web site and AW for pic hosting.

My small pics at the top of my ad are on my web site as is my background. I found out last year that I have a limit on info which I didn't realize until they contacted me to say that I had reached the 80% mark in the middle of the month last year. Talk about panic!

I am using AW for the larger detailed pics at the end of my ad and to create and launch my auctions.

During a period of time last year when AW was up and down (and everyone else was up and down too with the DOS events, etc.) I was using my site, AW and another site to be sure there were some pics running all the time.

So, I would have to say that I have been very pleased with my free service from AW.

Also, AW provides counters either visible or invisible.

So does Honesty and a host of others...

Neither of those require that you list through them, you can attach counters to running auctions.

edhdsn - where is your web site hosted? Do they make counters available to you? I just moved our (not-yet-constructed) web site to DellHost, and they have counters available there. Perhaps your host does too.

I use AW to host my photos. Sometimes when I'm reviewing my auctions, I notice the photos and counters do not appear. Yikes!
