Hi,

I got an email from someone tonight. Right behind it came a second email called [email protected]. (wk.net is my friend's ISP) When I opened the email in question it was blank but contained an attachment. The attachment is called "AVP" Update. Does this sound like it could be a virus or Trojan? I would like to write and tell her but I want to make sure that my information or fear is correct before I do
Thanks!

Very strange. AVP update is supposed to be an AntiVirus Program update, Norton I think.

I just did a search on Yahoo for AVP update and a bunch of stuff came back for AVP being an AntiViral program for emails. Maybe the service your friend is subscribed to uses AVP? Try writing to the nobody address and see what they say about it.

Mzalez, Is sort of strange. I have Norton and have updated it recently so I know that program does'nt usually generate an email.

Good idea to write that address and see what's up. Thank you.

Yes it is a trojan. Before that file had even settled onto my hard drive, my software caught it as TROJ_MTX.A From the description I read it blocks the person from "accessing any antivirus vendor websites". Delete it without opening it. A description and how to get rid of it is available at http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_MTX.A

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much Berkeley. I sent your reply to my friend. I didn't open it so I was not infected. I hate trojans! Got one a while back that really messed up my system.

Hi,
If you visit this URL http://pchell.com/virus/mtx.shtml (I don't know how to do it as a link) it will tell you about the virus and all the names it goes under. It sounds nasty.

Oooooh if it is TROJ_MTX.A watch out! That is one nasty trojan/virus/worm! Took us 2 days to get if off my computer. I was just sick about it! Thought I might lose everything. I am never opening another attachment again!!!!!!

I don't worry as much since I started updating my antivirus software every week. If you don't do that I would highly recommend it. I use PC-Cillin which I find better than the Norton we use on our systems at work. PC-Cillin has caught many a trojan/worm/virus that other software hasn't. (http://www.antivirus.com)

Sounds like some good info here. There is also software dedicated specifically to detecting and eliminating trojans since AV products are primarily aimed at viruses not trojans. Some anti-trojan products like The Cleaner and BOClean might be worth looking into if anyone's interested.

Hi Up there! And thanks for your help and comments. My friend(also my cousin) is having one helluva time with this one. The scan she ran shows she has 97 infected files and a whole mass she can't open. She is working on it now but it isn't sounding so good.

I use Norton 2000 and luckily it recognised the virus and quarantined it.

Anais,

I got it from a seller and unfortunately I had just FDISKed my computer last weekend. I hadn't installed my antivirus software yet as I was still looking for the upgrade serial number that I had put "in a safe place" (anyone else do that?) That usually means that it is so safe that I won't find it again. I resisted the urge to click until I had it installed and updated which is a good thing - I could have been in the same situation as your friend.

On this note, my floppy has been trying to work on its own from time to time since I FDISKed. Does anyone have any ideas on that?

Luckily my Norton 2000 was on the job last night. I had a worm, Wscript.KakWorm, come in last night on - - - - an eBay confirmation!

I had a few tense minutes last night when a WScript.KakWorm came at me last night with an . . . . eBay outbid notice! My Norton 2000 was on the ball and I got it quarantined.

A worm from Ebay no less? I would definitely let them know about that! Can you imagine how many users they are infecting?
