Buffalo had about 24" of snow on Monday. Thousands of cars were abandoned in the steets because driving was impossible. 2000 kids are still at school or in city buildings. The city is closed tomorrow. So, if you recently bought something from someone in Buffalo, please be patient.

Thank God I moved to New Orleans.

Buffalo, the only place in the world where the cold whipping winter wind would actually blow the contact lenses out of my eyes.

Once I was carrying a big piece of matte board and it was really windy and snowing (that yecchy wet snow). I went to jump over a slush puddle and at the same moment the wind gusted and caught the board like a wind. I flipped on to the ground and started to blow away! It was so embarrassing because there were people watching. I rolled a couple times, got up and tried to brush myself off as dignified as possible and get the heck out of there fast. Needless to say the matte board was ruined!

I do miss the downhill skiing, though.

I live in Buffalo and I have 25 inches of snow. I have a Jeep and figure it might be a good day to ship packages as long as my Post office is open. There certainly should be no wait in line. Then I might head out and do some Christmas shopping. I love it when there is no wait in the lines. A couple of our Malls are closed and certain areas are declared states of emergency with driving bans but not my area.

Buffalo? That's where we go during the winter to get away from the cold and snow

PS - Bubba --- right on! I've had a Jeep for the past 15 years. Unlike most Jeep owners though, I off-road in the mud and the snow. Working at a hospital, I also volunteer my services to get staff back and forth during our weekly blizzards. Bring on the snow!!!

I live in Florida, had to shovel the chads out of the driveway to move my car this morning (I don't own a chad blower yet). They are much better than snow, you can burn them in the fireplace. My problem is I'm not sure which wax to use on my skis to ski in deep chad. Guess I'll just go build a chad man or make chad angels.

Ugh. And my mother wonders why I left Buffalo 25 years ago and never looked back! Yet today we'll talk, and all she'll do is complain about the nasty weather there.

Nice, NICE folks (even if they now sound a bit odd to my ear), and I miss Polish food, but jeez, the weather truly sucks. It's a testament to Buffalonians that they're so good-natured about it.

Oh my! 24 inches of snow! We are going to Southern California for Thanksgiving and I was wondering if I should even take along a pair of long pants!!!

I hear stories like this and I know why I stay (and pay a sky high mortgage) in Silicon Valley! How high is the heating bill in Buffalo? My gas bill was $39.00 last month.

Minnie, I live in Los Angeles and yesterday I wore a pair of shorts and a tee shirt to the post office.

However, it *does* get chilly here at this time of year... mostly at night. I live in an unheated beach bungalow right near the shore, and with the ocean wind we get nights that are quite cold & require layers of clothing and an electric blanket.

But 99 percent of the time if you put on a sweater here in the morning, you end up taking it off a few hours later because it warms up in the afternoon. But I'd take a light jacket just to make sure.

I didn't own what I have heard they call a "coat" until I was in my 20s, and only because I took a trip out of state.

I just want to clear up a few myths about Buffalo weather...

It doesn't snow 12 months per year here. More like 5 or 6.

A few other cities get more snow than Buffalo (Syracuse is one of them).

And, we may have snow, but that's all we have. And, snow melts. We don't have earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, or major floods. See, it's not that bad here.

Believe it or not. One local major supermarket couldn't get Thanksgiving turkey's in due to the thruways being closed. You should have seen those nasty people grating the store manager who patiently tried to deal with a bunch of selfish fools. I'm one city over from Buffalo and can say we're sharening our shovels already! This stuff is heavy snow we're told and 42" is allot of snow! Houses too tight etc. HQC likely knows what I'm talking about here! oking toward Arizona in 5 yrs or so myself..

basketman,

DH has been out blowing the snow three times today in the hopes I might get out of the driveway to mail my packages. He cancelled a trip into Buffalo this morning, but it's no better here!

Wasn't prepared for this. I don't have a clue as to where my trusty toboggan is stored for carting packages, and I don't have any boots yet!! My feet, hair and behind are all soaking wet from walking the block to the PO, dragging parcels in a green garbage bag.

...and yes Bill, do need to clean my windows, but I'm not getting up on a ladder now! My pictures are coming in erratically because my ISP is having problems keeping the website up in this weather.

The joy of it all, not!

runaroundsue
look at it this way, you still have packages to mail. even if you had to use a plastic bag
if it was mud, unless you put them in plastic bag befor hand, you would not be mailing anything.
i'll take snow !!!!

I'm in upstate NY also - a couple hours from Buffalo - closer to Rochester. We got just a little bit of snow yesterday. We could still see the grass. But let me tell you - IT IS WINDY OUT THERE!

I'm a summer-weather person but I'm looking forward to a good snowfall. It's so pretty and the holidays just aren't the same without the snow.

We don't have...tornadoes

Uh, not exactly. Born and raised in Buffalo (Kenmore). One oppressive summer afternoon in the early '60s (will have to ask Mom) and Dad was out chasing tornadoes in Kansas, Mom got up from "our" nap to find the sky a weird color. There was this sound like a train, she said, and all sorts of stuff flew down the driveway (the 2-family houses were separated only by the driveways, so it was pretty narrow.) Destroyed a neighbor's garage AND knocked the statute off of the roof of Kenmore Mercy Hospital, about 1/2 mile away.

Anyway, here's a lovely Buffalo weather site, which puts to rest the idea that Buffalo is snowier than, say, Rochester. What the statistics DON'T say is that Buffalo is, I believe, the most populated of these areas, most of the rest of which are vast tundral hinterlands. Yet Buffalonians take it all in stride:

and a poem about Buffalo snow:
