Frequently, I see featured items for selling for much less than the $100 featured cost. Many sell for as low as $2-$5. Do sellers use auction creation programs or accidentally click on the feature button, because this just seems ridiculous! To make a featured auction, your total income from it must have to be at least $120 to make even a small profit.

Some sellers put up their most potentially "hot" item as featured, and in the auction, links to the list of their other eBay auctions.
In doing so, their hottest item is SUPER hot, and there is a good chance that their other auctions will be looked at quite a bit.

Well I don't know if this holds true for all sellers but many will list 4 to 10 pages of auction and they will feature just one this way for 7 to 10 days to get it featured in catagory when people go to see this one they will clcik to see sellers other auctions leading to more sales.
The hope of the buyer is that spending this $99 to feature one item for ten days will lead many biders to there other auctions.
If you search through a high volume sellers listings through out any week you will see they are listing 150 to 300 auction like every other day and you will hardly ever see them have less then $1000 and more in current bids.

I think that most times when sellers have cheap items in main page featured it is for large multiple dutch offerings where the quantity could cover the fees.

Yes, that's how it usually is, or big ticket items which they are obviously marking up a few hundred to even a few thousand dollars.
