Good Morning Everyone,
While not as jaded as some, I too am getting leery of the 3rd party credit card services. I haven't had any bad experiences yet (knock on wood!), but I have started to research getting a merchant account.
Do any of you have a provider that you would recommend? If so, why?

Novus, which is basically the Discover card, though they offer Visa & MasterCard, also. I have been with them for over 8 years, and have had no problems what so ever. I am very pleased with them.

For mailorder & internet I use: echo-inc.com
For retail I use: foomp.com
Neither of those companies want you to lease terminals or software through them. You can purchase your own software or terminal. I was set up with echo less than 3 days after they got my paperwork. I use PC charge software: provantage.com (best prices on the net).
Make sure you let them know if it is retail or internet sales you are doing. There are different types of accounts for each one.

When I started using bigstep.com I signed up with Cardservice International for a merchant account. I have had no problems with them at all. I can use BigStep as a shopping card or as a way to process individual charges. There's no software or terminal leasing.

I use Cardservice International as well and have been very pleased. It's been two years now and no increase in my discounts, actually a decrease in my Amex!
