When I have a Canadian winner, I inform them I can accept payment by Visa, MasterCard, a Canada Postal Money Order, or a MO with an American Bank Address on the front of it.

This week I received 3 money orders from the "Royal Bank Of Canada US Dollar Money Order"

Well guess what. These money orders must be returned to Canada for payment. My bank informed me this will cost $25.00 per MO. Since the money orders are only for $15.00 to $20.00, this will wind up costing me money just to have them cashed.

So beginning with auctions ending tonight, I am telling the Canadian winners that:

<<I accept Visa/MC through a secured server.

If you are paying by Money Order please note the money order must be an international money order, either a Canada Postal (orange-pink color) OR having a United States bank address on the face of the money order.

Any other money order will be returned to you, as my bank charges a $25.00 fee to handle it. This includes the “Royal Bank Of Canada US Dollar World Money Order” There is no US address on it.">>

It is cheaper for me to mail the MO back at 55 cents than it is to send the item and also lose $5.00 in the transaction.

If I was you, I'd it change it to this:

I accept Visa/MC through a secured server.

If you are paying by Money Order please note: the money order must be an *International* POSTAL money order, (orange-pink color) in US funds. No other Money Orders, or cheques, will be accepted due to the processing fees my bank charges.

Nice of you to at least keep doing business with us crazy Canucks.

Barrelracer:

I am very surprised about the money order. Royal Bank of Canada has a branch in New York. If the New York address of the bank was shown on the face of the money order, it certainly wouldn't have to be returned to Canada.

Hi reddeer,

Happy Holidays!

It has gone a lot better since we last talked about the MOs. Just this past week with 3 of them....

Right now the US bidders are worse about paypla. Because I take CC, even though the auctions say No Paypla, I get beamed a lot of paypal payments too!

It's that time of year. Great to be selling a lot, but a lot of people that are new to ebay too.

I like your wording and might use that instead. Are Postal Money Orders expensive over there in relation to bank Money Orders?

Did you get my post the other day about stopping the animations on a page.
1 press of the "Escape" button stops animations for me.

stockticker,
I am staring at 3 of them now. I honestly can't see an US address on the front.

ANYWHERE!!

I don't know what Postal MO's cost but I get free US$ MO's from my bank and they do have a US address on them. Probably bought 50 different things with them and no seller has ever told me that his/her bank had a problem.

Bill,
My bank doesn't have a problem with the ones with the US address on them either.

And the fee for the others used to only be $5.00, which I just took as a loss. But Friday she informed me the new fee was $25.00. At that price it would be cheaper to send the item and the MO to Canada!

So I took the money orders back home and I really don't know what to do.

Happy Holidays to you as well barrelracer!

Yes, I saw the tip about the escape key, thanks.

That's odd about PP payments, I've only had 2 folks attempt to send me PP, and both were from the US. That was months back.

FYI - A Cdn Postal MO costs $3.50 Cdn [$2.33 US]

Irene & Bill ........ The problem with US banks is that there are so damn many of them, and they all seem to vary in what they will accept from up here.
Som of those US banks "hold" the funds from International Postal MO's for 4 weeks, and also charge a hefty fee to process them.
Go figure?
I always inform the US sellers to take my Postal MO to the PO to cash it. I also try to remember to spell cheque, check.

barrelracer, take another look at those MOs -- I think in the bottom right hand corner they may say "New York" -- it's very very small.

I thought the same thing when I received one of those, but someone here or on the international board at ebay told me where to look -- it cashed with no problem. The thing is, the New York statement is not very big and it's hard to see that yes, they have a New York branch.

I can't vouch for the Royal but I use Canada Trust and TD and both have a US address on the front. CT has a Delaware address and TD uses American Express money orders with a New York address. I used to send cheques drawn on a US dollar account (but Canadian location) but this got me in hot water with some sellers - as stated previously, some banks charge big bucks to cash these. Never had a problem with a money order though.

EVERY time, without exception, I take a Canadian payment of any type into my small town S&L it's a 5 minute Chinese firedrill in futility, stupidity and frustration.

Thank you!

You are right. It is there in the corner.

And it is very small!

You have saved me a bunch of aggrevation.

reddeer

My post office charged me $3.00 for an international mo to send to Canada. But it's the only place in town that has international money orders!

Thanks to all for your help.

Just to add a little more confusion...

My bank told me it isn't the address or the issuing authority that matters for non-US items. If the Canadian cheque or money order has a US Federal banking system routing number (9 digits in the lower left-hand corner), then it can be processed along with US-issued instruments for no additional fee.

I suspect that this, rather than a US address, is what the bankers are looking for.

Silkmoth -- It appears to vary from bank to bank. My bank is like yours; they only care about the numbers coded on the bottom. They even took a personal check drawn on a Canadian account with "U.S. funds" handwritten next to the amount, without a fee. (BTW, I e-mailed the sender's bank first to make sure this was valid and would be honored on their end.)

I pay for all of my purchase with the Royal Bank World Money Order, in US dollars. I have never heard of any seller having a problem with them. $25 is a LOT of money to me! I would cry if that sort of cashing was levied against me!! It also seems to me that the New York branch of the Royal Bank is stated right on the face of their money order. I prefer to get bank money orders because they are free to me with my banking package.

It's amazing that we can send cash, checks, US Postal Money orders all over the world, except the country next door, where everything has to be complicated.

I know I'm not buying anything out of Canada anymore.

Rebel----it's your USA post office that has (for some stupid reason) 2 different money orders--and then rip the poor buyers off for wanting an international one.....try sending one of those greenies half way across the world and it will come back to ya in no time flat.

This is interesting. I have never had a problem with Royal Bank of Canada money orders but my bank gives me heck about Canada Post. Sometimes I can have them cashed, sometimes they tell me they have to be " sent off" or something depending on who is working. What a pain.

I have found they will deposit through they ATM 100% of the time though >

Silkmoth, you are right of course. But the US address and the fed-reserve compliant code go hand in hand. The checks and MO's seem to have both or neither.

And, one more time, Postal MO's from darn near anywhere in the world should be cashed at your POST OFFICE - there is no charge.

Bill .... The problem with "some" Postal MO's, are they are too large of an amount for the PO to cash. I've had International Postal MO's sent to me for for $700 US. Try cashing one of those at your local PO.
