I know many of you are for PayPal and many are against it. Up until today I thought surely they wouldn't freeze all of these accounts like that, but now I'm not so sure. I won multiple auctions and wanted to pay for them. I didn't have enough money in my account so needed to put the remainder on a CC. While doing this I was in the middle of playing a game with my duaghters and not paying close attention. Long story short, I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and used the wrong card that I had on file. It wouldn't clear it's Christmas time and I have been using the cards quite a bit the last few days. When I saw it wouldn't clear I thought I had used the wrong one, which I did, and danged if I didn't go back in and do it again. Trying to win that game! I got off the computer, lost the game, got back online to find an email from PayPal that my account has been suspended due to numerous attempts to use credit cards. It was only two attempts and one card. The email states that to get the account back I need to verify my bank account again, send a fax with a copy of my DL and last statement from my CC company. Part of me thinks they are trying to protect me, but the other part thinks why do they want all this info. I have a small amount of money in the account. Nothing major, but it is mine.
Please tell me what you think about this. And yes, I know I should have been paying better attention and not trying to do two things at once.

They are using ANY user error as an opportunity to demand bank account information. Send them an email requesting that they close the account and send you a check for the balance and consider it a lesson in internet survival.

If they own't close the account unless you verify your bank account and FAX the DL to them, it depends on how much money you have in there ... I'd turn the whole thing over to a STATE attorney general at that point and say they are making it hard to get my money. Or a local consumer protection reporter at a TV station (publicity is a weapon).

^^What Abacaxi said^^

And if you don't have a consumer reporter in your area, go to http://www.clarkhoward.com

Clark is in Atlanta, but his radio show is syndicated. He has a team of volunteers manning telephones to help consumers. The telephone number is (404) 892-8227.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but glad you were HONEST. Realize that:

1. You created the problem

2. It is the time of year any company has to keep a VERY close watch for people attempting to use bad credit cards, OR stolen credit cards

3. Realize the computer doesn't KNOW for a fact that was you making those attempts and by asking you to go through these steps it is actually PROTECTING you - what if someone had stolen your card, and had been allowed into your account with this card YOU used - !!!!!!!

4. Realize that making sure YOU are YOU and not a thief who stole your purse, they are not only protecting YOU, but the SELLER who could be the innocent receiver of a BAD credit card.

5. Count it to a learning experience and go through the resign up process with the knowledge that you account is safe - and you made the boo boo

Regarding someone saying to report them - that is ridiculous - reporting a company for trying to protect YOUR own account!!!!!

FUNNY, in what is suppose to be the season of PEACE & GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN - I see more anger, frustration, and down right meanness than during any other time of year~ VERY Sad!

AGAIN, I APPLAUD YOUR HONESTY in telling the truth about how it originally got messed up.

IMO...

99% of the Pay Pal problems you read and hear about are caused by 1 of 3 things..
1. operator error...
2. operator stupidity...
3. operator unable to tie their shoes...

..Life is like email, sometimes 'some people' just don't get it...

jwpc & MR. Bucks - Two people that actually "get it". I salute you. The rest of you are so blinded by your hatred of paypal that the comments you make are laughable (send it to the state attorney general??). YIKES!!!!

No, my credit card company gets it!
When I had some unusual activity on my VISA card last holiday season, my card issuer
did not ask me to fax a utility bill and a copy of my drivers license. It did not ask me to go through some convoluted checking account "verification" process a second time.

It simply called me, noted that the activity was unusual for my account and asked if I had made the charges. (I had.)

I appreciated that.

The way it was handled showed that my card issuer had respect for me. That's something PayPal hasn't learned yet.

Just a "heads up"--if you do give them your bank account info in order to verify, pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION the next time you send a payment. Any amount over your PayPal account balance will be debited to your bank account, rather than being drawn on a credit card. They've reset the system to default to the verifying bank account for every transaction now. I got caught on that one, and I'm usually pretty careful. Doesn't help that PP has done such a good job of hiding that information in the new format!

No, my credit card company gets it!

I was just about to write the same thing. I received a call from my credit card company this past summer, asking me if I was aware that my card had been used in 4 states the day before. I told them that I had just driven from California to Idaho, and that I had made all the charges they were questioning. That was a good enough explanation for them, and my account was not "locked" or "restricted" in any way.

In order to provide customer service, a business needs to hire and pay people to do the job and every business needs to decide what level of service is appropriate for their customers. It sounds like PayPal is trying to get by with providing as little as possible.

You know who else gets it? Western Union's Moneyzap. The first time a payment is sent out from an account, they will contact the sender and verify identity. After that they only do it if there is a reason, like a large payment. These so-called "services" have to learn what the word service means. By the way, I just updated my payment ratings due to some recent information I just learned about Paydirect. Not that it was any surprise to me, but the same folks who love it because it's free (just like paypal) still have to learn that free does not always mean good.

Thanks everyone for the advise. I'm still not to sure about what I'm going to do. I've read all the problems everyone has had in the past few months, and I've read yisgood's web page with all his helpful information. At first I was shocked to see the account suspended then embarrassed that it was my own mistake. I see paypaldamon is back and is going to try to help me, so maybe all will turn out good. But think I will look into some of the other money payment services that are out there.
Thanks again and wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season!

"No, my credit card company gets it!"

When I had trouble with somebody using my CC number unauthorized (new card was stolen out of the mail) they closed the account and it took 3 weeks to get a new card with a new account number. I did not have a CC during that time and the interest charges kept right on growing anyway. Just the way business is done in those cases.

You need a new credit card company. When I had a credit card stolen, I had a new card with a new number in hand in three days.

GOOD LUCK!! Paypal is not a customer service oriented company. My account has been restricted for a month and I cannot get anything done about it. They do not need to see my bank statement. My personal account is no ones business but mine!

Re: my credit card company gets it.

I accidently used the wrong pin number at the atm. They immediately locked my account and I had to call them and jump hoops to get it unlocked. They were protecting me, the same as paypal was doing with the person who started this thread.

My credit card company gets it??

Your credit card company has the name of your 6th grade school teacher! not just one of your credit card numbers. That is like a friend of a friend saying you are dependable. I don't blame paypal a bit if they ask you how often you have sex if it relates to your financial stability. PayPal is great and the only people posting here about it generally are thise who screwed up somehow and had a problem. Maybe some of us should keep our credit cards on the zero end rather than the maxed out end. I love my online banking because I can pay off a credit card as soon as I use it. (Although I do hav some outstanding balances on low interst cards but that is another sites story) Regards

My credit card company has the information that's available to it via Equifax and the other big credit reporting agencies.

And if you sign up for PayPal's money market account, PayPal has access to exactly the same information.

The difference is my credit card company treats me with respect. That's one hell of a lot more than I can say for PayPal.

And no, I've never had a problem with PayPal that was my fault.

Just an update - I did email PayPal right after I realized what had happened and I emailed paypaldamon. After a couple of emails with him he said he would pass on the information I gave him. Three days after I emailed PayPal they answered and lifted the suspension on my account. I don't remember the exact words they used in the email, but was something like, "since we are not a face to face company at times we will freeze an account until we can check and see what is going on in order to protect the account holder".
As I said in the beginning of this thread it was my mistake, but all has been taken care of now and I have been able to get to my money.
I know many are for PayPal and many are against as we can see by the daily threads here. But I for one am glad to know that they are looking out for me and watching for suspious activities on my account.
Thanks for all your help!
Happy Holidays!

Ages ago, I forgot my PIN number for the ATM, I was punching every combo I could think of. No surprise, the machine took my card! I went into the bank and said the machine stole my card. She said, "the machine didn't steal your card, it just held it for security reasons." I had to come back after they emptied the machine.

Paypal is essentially doing the same thing here. It's a pain sure, but so is having a crook with access to your account. It's just a security measure. I don't think a Tv news consumer reporter would bother with this- too much gray area.
